Firefox Extensions

Recommended Posts

Hey Anthony, GCNbball8 above: (Post #63), bet you to it.

That's what I get for posting at 3:00 in the morning after watching bands all night. I didn't even notice that. Still a very neat extension though. I probably won't keep it because after a few hours of saying "wow that's cool" to myself it really doesn't do much. Maybe I will keep it installed but disabled until there are people around than I will turn it back on so they can say "wow that's cool" for an hour or so than disable it again.

B) I already uninstalled it... :P ... it takes significantly longer to move between tabs...lol

I know Customize Google has already been recommended but I think its worth a second mention thanks to a very cool new feature it now has. It can now stream Google search results:

Whenever you navigate to the end of the page, you dont have to hit the next button. CustomizeGoogle automatically fetches next set of results and appends them to the bottom of the page.

If that doesn't make sense there is a video of it in action HERE

And you can download Customize Google HERE

I had a lot of problems with Update Notifier so I ditched it. I won't touch anything that says McAfee or Norton. Plus I rarely visit sites that aren't for school these days. I don't need NoScript either. But thanks! ;)

Like what kind of problems? I've been using it for a long time, and I've never had a problem with it.

Since they updated the Addons site the old reviews have been all removed for the extensions so the reviews there now are few and recent. If you had read the reviews that were there there were many problems with Tabbrowser Preferences breaking Firefox and/or other extensions. It's history dates back to 2004 and there were loads of reviews about it. Tab Mix Plus is far more popular and problem free.

You'll all have to go some to beat this:

200 Firefox Extensions:

This is not my discovery, the story was posted by one of the guys on here a while ago, but I can't remember who.

Sticking it up again because it seems relevant to the last few posts, and some may have missed it.

Right now I use three add-ons, as I think that loading too many into Firefox just adds to the amount of time it takes the browser to open (and bloats the ram usage).

McAfee Siteadvisor

SecurePasswordGenerator

ShowIP

For those that have installed quite a few add-ons, do they ever "phone home" for reasons other than updating?

When you start Firefox, have you tried a netstat -an command or used TCPIP to see how many ports are opened when the program starts?

Well I have no problem with Firefox and RAM usage or speed. It uses as much/little as most of my browsers. As for "phone home" I have disabled auto updates for my extensions. I check manually.

Edit: I know the Ad Block Plus extension checks for updates to the ad filters every 5 days or so.
