October 1809 Update for Windows 10

Soon as I read this topic I made a disk image!;)

It will only automatically download, and install it if it's compatible with the PC, if a PC has a compatibility issue then it won't be available until that's fixed. From looking around on several websites it's recommended to wait for Automatic Updates to download it, that way it should be compatible.

Took a little while but no problems really.

LOL.

I checked for updates and it started downloading - at 200-500 Kbps! (It's usually better than that but still rural BB speeds).

After an hour it had downloaded 7%. So I unplugged the laptop and tookit across the road to the pub. (Any excuse). 50-57 Mbps fibre, download complete in 10 mins.

Still installing.

Task Manager seems to be showing the wrong CPU usage, its fine in the list but the total seems way too big.
Unless there is something using CPU that is not showing in the list?

I'm currently showing about 2% for the individual apps/services, yet the column heading says 65% and the graph shows about the same.

Some non-microsoft desktop Icons changed image on their own, and some icons elswhere seem to have changed size.
Particularly noticable in 'Settings>Home'  where they seem about 25% smaller.

I like the new dark theme in File Explorer.

(Now I need to work out where this new clipboard stuff is saved so that I can add it into my batch file).

Cheers Hazel.

Not a big issue just a strangeness.

Still not had a good look round at the new stuff yet, but nothing seems 'broken' up to now.

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.

Have you had a look in the Event Viewer..Application.... and seen all the 1534 errors?

Take a look on the WindowsTenForum at https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/118976-new-1809-update-now-shows-event-viewer.html

On page 3 of this thread, the first post by Eagle51 shows a procedure that fixed the "Profile notification of event Load for component {B31118B2-1F49-48E5-B6F5-BC21CAEC56FB} failed, error code is See Tracelogging for error details." multiple errors on my systems

FWIW ... Everyone may not have the B31118B2-1F49-48E5-B6F5-BC21CAEC56FB key in all the places listed in Zardoc's post (I didn't), so I recommend you do the fix manually. If you're not comfortable doing the following, then don't and wait for MS to fix it.

1. Use ExecTi to open Regedit and navigate to the following two keys ...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileNotification
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileNotification
2. Under ProfileNotification check if you have the TDL key
3. Delete the TDL key at each location
4. Check the locations in Zardoc's post and delete the B31118B2-1F49-48E5-B6F5-BC21CAEC56FB key
5. Reboot PC to verify

Note:
1. I would export the keys ... before you delete them ... just to be on the safe side.
2. ExecTI

I also have a lot of warnings in the event viewer, all for the User Profile Service, all with event ID 1534.
Looking at the Hex code it's the same component loading error and it's trying multiple times to load it.
Looks like it does eventually load. Sometimes first retry but I have one instance where it took 20+ tries.

It's not clear yet, but all the 'confirmed' reports of lost files that I have seen seem to have used the 'Update Assistant' rather than 'Check for Updates'.
There are some suggestions that it is also linked to usage of One Drive local storage in some way. (Suggestions that if the files don't exist in One Drive they get deleted?).

There also seems to be a problem with certain Intel audio drivers and MS has blocked Automatic Update to machines with certain Intel chips until they can fix it.

upgraded 3 PC's tonight to 1809, no issues found.

4 more to do tomorrow...

Noticed a small one with Storage Sense 'Free up space now'  and 1809.

When you run it it seems to be doing nothing at first.
It's not until after about 30 secs that it starts showing what it is scanning and filling in the progress bar.

I've not come across anything major, just these little oddities that many users wouldn't even notice.
I thought that was what the insiders programme was for, to find and get rid of these oddities before RTM.

Interestingly the rest of that announcement also seems to point to the manual installation using Update Assistant being the problem, with Check for Updates not given the same emphasis.

If you have checked for updates and believe you have an issue, please contact us directly at .......

If you have manually downloaded the Windows 10 October 2018 Update installation media, please don’t install it and wait until new media is available.

Of course if people made backups of their files then it would not be a problem.
(I saw one guy shouting that he had lost 23 years worth of work files - Really? Never backed up your work files in 23 years?)

done 7 PC's now, no issues.  doing them all from a USB stick with the ISO from the Media Creation Tool.

only one very minor thing, on 3 of the PC's it made the desktop background the solid black colour whereas I always set mine to the solid blue.
so all-in-all, a painless experience so far.

just have 2 laptops to go... :)

It does seem to be a problem with using Update Assistant before the upgrade is fully compatible with certain machines.

If you try to 'force' the update yourself before MS says it's ready for your machine then you may have problems.

From what I've seen online if it isn't showing up in 'Updates & Security > Windows Update' it should be left alone.

The person that lost 23 years of work, that was supposedly 220 GB worth, couldn't imagine even trying to backup all that 23 years ago -- but nowadays it wouldn't even make a dent on a high capacity HDD that costs a mere $40 USD, hell it would even fit comfortable on a 256 GB flash drive.

Well it won't show now in 'Check for Updates' because it's been pulled altogether.

The problem does seem confined to those who downloaded to media and installed it themselves, - and they probably did that because it wasn't being offered to them by 'Check for Updates'.
Which of course suggests that it was not compatible with their particular setup yet, or they would have been offered it.

It's also possible that it may have been a problem with the 'Install from media' rather than with Windows10 1809 itself?
Anyone who has done this to update an existing Windows installation will know there are options to 'Keep personal files and apps', 'Keep personal files only', or 'Keep Nothing'.
Maybe that choice was not being respected and it just wiped the files? (Or maybe the affected users simply made the wrong choice?).

As reported above Recuva is usually able to get the deleted files back.
