johnp57
Windows Module Installer often creates a restore point after I run CCleaner & reboot I can't figure out what is being installed or reinstalled? I am running Windows 10 Pro on a HP ProBook . and the latest version of CCleaner Any ideas? `My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'Nothing beside remains. Moderators mta Posted August 26, 2018 Moderators Share Posted August 26, 2018 And when you say ‘latest version’ what is the number? Moderators nukecad Posted August 26, 2018 Moderators Share Posted August 26, 2018 Something changed recently with Windows (last patch Tuesday) and now when Windows Defender updates it definitions, which it does a few times a day, it creates a restore point if there has not already been one created in the last 24 hours. No one seems to be quite sure why this has been changed by Microsoft, maybe they know something we don't and are expecting a lot of crashes? I think I remember that Vista also used to create a restore point daily. *** Out of Beer Error ->->-> Recovering Memory *** Worried about 'Tracking Files'? Moderators hazelnut Posted August 26, 2018 Moderators Share Posted August 26, 2018 Also it is posted about here https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-security/windows-defender-system-restore-points/86f77a7f-4ee9-411f-b016-223993c55426?tm=1534637645443 1. It appears that disabling the Windows Defender Verification Task in Task Scheduler will stop the daily Restore Points from being created. 2. No guarantee it won't get enabled again on the next run or next WD Platform Update. 3. Don't know what (if any) side effects might occur if you disable it ... so disable it at your own risk. Moderators Andavari Posted August 27, 2018 Moderators Share Posted August 27, 2018 A daily restore point being created isn't a bad ideal in my opinion, back in the WinXP days I did that manually myself - albeit if something would've broke the OS I would've instead just restored from a Macrium Reflect image. Point is this is new behaviour and shouldn't be happening when a Defender definition update occurs. As there have been quite a few posts around the net about it hopefully they will fix it. Moderators mta Posted August 27, 2018 Moderators Share Posted August 27, 2018 another bullet dodged as restore points are one of the first things always disabled when setting up my PC's. my backup regime means they are moot plus I don't won't them on my SSD. Moderators Andavari Posted August 27, 2018 Moderators Share Posted August 27, 2018 They aren't daily on my system I've got two labeled Windows Module Installer for 21 August, and 27 August - and that's with Windows Defender updating itself daily.
