This is almost here (April 10th) build 1803

Here are a few things to kickstart customisation.......

How to Disable Timeline in Windows 10 Spring Creators Update

Quote

Basically, what Timeline does is create snapshots of your activity, like loaded websites, launched apps, and edited documents, and then allow you to restore a session with just a click. This means Windows collects activity history information and saves it for later use, just in case you want to return to a previous snapshot at a certain moment in the future.

How to Delete Telemetry Data in Windows 10 Spring Creators Update

Quote

Telemetry services in Windows 10 have been one very controversial topic from the very beginning, as many people considered them to be part of what they called a campaign put together by Microsoft to spy on its users.

With the imminent release of Windows 10 build 1803, also known as the Spring Creators Update, we may be seeing the end of the Disk Cleanup program.

That does seem like an improvement over Disk Cleanup.

How many family members/friends do you have who have never even heard of Disk Cleanup, and wouldn't know where to find it or how to use it if they had?

PS. Thanks for the heads up about Timeline.

will need to see it in action, but at this stage it'll still be cleanmgr for me.

Well there's that sageset command you've mentioned before that makes it more powerful, so I wonder how "Free up space now" compares to that.

knowing MS, I suspect Free Up Space Now will be a dumbed down version, which is good for the mere mortal users, but hopefully it'll be configurable, as you say, just like sageset allows you to be.

My laptop is currently downloading 3 updates as I type this.

The Malicious software removal tool. KB890830.

A Flash Player security update. KB4093110.

A Cumulative update. KB4093112. Which says "No new operating system features ...."
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4093112/windows-10-update-kb4093112

So yes It looks like the SCU is not ready yet.

MS owned 'Windows Blogs' announcement from yesterday, look at the bottom of the article.

Quote

The April 2018 Update will be available as a free download beginning Monday, April 30.

The last day when they can reasonably call it the "April 2018 Update"

https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2018/04/27/make-the-most-of-your-time-with-the-new-windows-10-update/#AolQUrPDsG1BbijH.97

EDIT
On further reading elsewhere; it should be available to manually download on April 30 but won't start rolling out in Windows Update until May 8 (patch Tuesday).

Well it's April 30th, and  the April 2018 Update is here.

Despite what Microsoft announced previously about the update only being available to manually download/install until May 8th my laptop started downolading it through Windows Update as soon as I switched on this evening.

Yes you can also ask to download it manually if it isn't offered automatically.

Media Creation Tool is also offering it now in case you want to make a DVD or USB for clean install  or just updating another PC

A partial explanation from Microsoft-

https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2018/04/30/how-to-get-the-windows-10-april-2018-update/

Quote

The April 2018 Update is available today if you go to Windows Update and manually check for updates. We will begin the global rollout out via Windows Update on May 8.

Quote

While we encourage you to wait until the update is offered to your device, if you’re an advanced user on an actively serviced version of Windows 10 and would like to install the Windows 10 April 2018 update now, you can do so by manually checking for updates

Mine just started downloading by itself, I hadn't done a manual check.

Maybe they changed their minds again, or maybe I'm "an advanced user on an actively serviced version of Windows 10" and something on my laptop had a flag set?

Installed and up, no problems.

It changed the desktop background and added a couple of unwanted icons (Edge & Waves Audio). Soon sorted.
Been through the settings, there were a few new ones to turn off, including the timeline feature.

Need to check a few other things.
eg. It seemed to have turned the (disabled) microphone back on and I think it may also have turned my (disabled) camera back on.

EDIT. Yes it had enabled the camera again, probably for the new face recognition/password options. Soon disabled in device manager.

I've found an odd glitch in Win10 1803.

It happens when you are playing a game from the inbuilt Microsoft Solitaire Collection.

After about 3 minutes of play the screen will go totally black for 1/2 to 3 seconds before coming back again.

It only seems to affect games, and only happens the once in each session, and then all is fine until the next reboot.
I've seen it happen with Spider, Free Cell, and Pyramid.

I'm not sure if it affects any other games; it would seem to be a graphics issue?

Still a bit of an 'Oh, B*****' moment the first few times it happens, (then you get used to it).

I've also noticed that the Solitaire Collection has changed where it saves game scores/statistics in 1803.

I had this as an 'include' in CCleaner to delete them and start from fresh every time.

This 'include' had stopped working with 1803 so I had to track the new filename/location down.

If you use a local account to log into your computer (I do) the statistics file can now be found at, and easily deleted from:

C:\Users\{yourusername}\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftSolitaireCollection_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\savegame\Guest\statistic\statistic.sgi

{yourusername} will need changing to suit your computer.

If you use a Microsoft Account to log into your computer then the "Guest" will probably not be correct either, you should be able to find the right folder easily enough.
BUT if you are logged in to a MS account the file is also saved at MS and will resync from the cloud if you just delete it from your computer.
To avoid this you have to disconnect from the web, delete the file, and play one game. This creates a new 'statistics.sgi' file, so when you connect back to the web it will not download the old one.

I also play as a guest, I don't even have a MS account anymore.

I may try resetting/reinstalling the Solitaire Collection from Settings > apps

Interestingly though I have build 17134.1, maybe they have patched it in .48 ?

From the Knowledge Base notes:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4103721/windows-10-update-kb4103721

Quote

Security updates to Windows Server, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Microsoft scripting engine, Windows app platform and frameworks, Windows kernel, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows storage and filesystems, HTML help, and Windows Hyper-V.

So the black screen issue may have been patched.

I've got the update to .48 downloaded now and just need a restart.

Hopefully the .48 update fixes it.

I had kind of similar issue where playing a game (which I play a lot and never had problems before 1803 feature update) after some random time, the screen would just lock up in the game, and it couldn't recover. Could access the other screen with the mouse, do alt-tabs etc and other already open programs seemed to respond & work fine, but wouldn't close & nothing new could be opened either. Couldn't open task-manager to kill the locked game, and while I could access the start menu and select things, where upon the start menu would close and the drive would start to "try" to load something, nothing actually worked, so couldn't logout, reboot, sleep etc, and also couldn't sleep via power button on pc, only solution was to do a hard-reset :( . I'd read others had similar issues, (in chrome mainly) and a suggested workaround was to hit Win+Ctrl+Shift+b which resets the graphics driver, only on my system it wouldn't work once the problem occurred, the hotkey itself would work prior to the problem showing up, but after the problem had occurred, the hotkey would also make inputs non responsive after doing it, essentially creating a total system freeze. Anyway it didn't happen last night after installing .48 so fingers crossed.

Some other much smaller issues I had on installing the original update was the secondary monitor lost its color profile settings, which had to be re-enabled, naturally it also decided I wanted the Photo Viewer as my default image program again, and a another one which may become a nuisance and is still there is the Feedback Frequency setting in privacy -> Diagnostics & Feedback, won't let me change it from Automatically ask for feedback and tells me the Windows Insider Programme manages this option, despite the fact I've never signed up for the Insider Programme. (I've read this last one is kind of common).

Well the black screen for a second or so during games came back and is worse, it happens more than once now and seemingly randomly.

It's not a great problem once you know that it only affects games and that it's only going to last a second.
Although it still makes you wonder every time it happens if it is going to come back.

There are a few strange non-critical oddities with 1803.
For instance Settings tells me at times that "These settings are controlled by your organisation" (or similar wording). That's a message you see on Windows 10 Enterprise or Pro editions - but this laptop is Win10 Home so there is no 'Organisation'.
I've not had the one where it says I'm on the Insider programme (yet).

I expect they'll get patched over the months, just in time for Redstone 5 to come along with a new batch of quirks.

"These settings are controlled by your organisation"

Those words should disappear when you do a manual update. Just about everyone I know seen that writing (in red) when doing the 1803 update.

1803 might not like you nukecad

They are are little glitches, just about what you expect when coders are working in a rush. You tend to miss/forget little details.

PS. Do you like my new avatar?
(The old one didn't fit properly in the circle, this one's better but still not quite right, I may have to play a bit more).

Not sure what you are meaning there, but my Apps for websites shows 2 entries for maps and one for Edge, and those are all turned off.

I've been working on padding the white space around my favourite avatar images and seeing if the forum will then accept them without cropping too much.

Edit - That's better.
