brberger
Please help! I downloaded the free version of Recuva and used it to recover some jpegs I accidentally deleted on my SD card. Gosh, I thought it worked flawlessly until I went to view the photos. Both Windows Photo Gallery and Paint can not display any of the images. They all show to have the appropriate extension (.JPG) and file sizes but when I try to view them the program says " The file may be unsupported, damaged or corrupted." I tried a second time to recover with the same result. Please advise - how can I recover these photos? Thanks!
Moderators Augeas Posted November 5, 2017 Moderators Share Posted November 5, 2017 Your card is probably FAT32. When a file is deleted in FAT32 the first two bytes of the first cluster address in the directory are zeroed. So there is still a value for the first cluster, but it is incorrect. Recuva will follow this value and return what it finds, which for all intents and purposes is rubbish. You could try a deep scan which should find the deleted files. However a deep scan can only identify the first fragment of a file, so if the file is fragmented you may not get all your data back. Try it.
