Soozy
The issue happened immediately after the 5.37 CCleaner update the other day.

smithy
Hi All, Just updated CCleaner to version 5.38.6357 (64 bit) and the next time I booted my PC, Windows.old disappeared. Luckily no important files were deleted after Windows Creators Fall Update. However I'm not happy that CCleaner went ahead and deleted this folder without my permission especially since the folder was in the root folder (C). Now I can't restore my system to previous version if I need to. No more CCleaner for me. The real time monitoring should be disabled by default as should the Options->Advanced->Only delete files etc.

The cleaning setting "Old Windows Installation" isn't enabled by default! And if you previously have disabled the monitoring feature, it's also disabled after a version update. (BTW: Restoring the previous Windows version works for 30 days only. Windows clears the "windows.old" folder automatically.)
andycleaner
I can no longer clean IE11 cookies after upgrading to 1709. If you run "shell:cookies", you can find a file named deprecated.cookie with content: "Cookies are no longer stored in files. Please use InternetCookie APIs to access cookies." Ccleaner as far as I know already uses internetcookie api ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF. Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark) ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T. I have done more testing: I first signed into both ebay.com and amazon.com. In CCleaner, Options, Cookies, I selected all the cookies, right click, "Delete now". I ran CCleaner again, and those cookies no longer showed up. I then visited ebay.com, and I was still logged into ebay.com (presumably because of cookie). I ran CCleaner again, and ebay.com showed up again. I then visited amazon.com, and I was still logged into amazon.com (presumably because of cookie). I ran CCleaner again, and www.amazon.com showed up again. In IE11, Tools, Delete browsing history..., check Cookies, Delete. When I visited ebay.com or amazon.com, I was no longer logged in. So CCleaner is likely using the APIs to some extent, but is not cleaning cookies completely. CCleaner still works fine with 1703 to clean IE11 cookies. I have tried both versions 5.37 and 5.38 with 1709.

We have done some investigation into this and to cut a long story short, it's complicated. We need to do more research to find a more optimal way of cleaning this. Until Piriform comes out with a fix it's recommended that nobody uses CCleaner to remove the Windows.old folder. If you must remove Windows.old instead only use the built into Windows tool Disk Cleanup to do it which supposedly doesn't damage the OS. I have had the same problem with Windows build-in disk clean up. But that was build's ago. Could by best to do as the boss stated, or as Mark Twain once said. I will learn how to master that bicycle some day.

Thank you. With 1709, I believe 5.41 did work to clean IE11 cookies, albeit taking (much?) longer. Unfortunately, with 1803, it seems none of 5.40, 5.41, and 5.42 is working to clean IE11 cookies. (My PC does not crash with 5.40, 5.41, or 5.42 , but they behave on 1803 just like 5.37 or 5.38 on 1709 in not cleaning IE11 cookies like I had reported early this year.) Dink4
Just had the 1803 update last week on my Win 10 Pro , CCleaner v5.43 free and its not cleaning IE11 cookies properly now ( logged into eBay cookie preserved ) If I go to control panel and use INTERNET OPTIONS and delete temporary files its gone , if I sign into eBay again , close IE wait 5 mins and do a cleaner, CCleaner reports that there are no cookies in OPTIONS/COOKIES after a clean but if I shutdown/restart CCleaner it shows that eBay cookie is still there in OPTIONS/COOKIES ! Not complaining as I love CCleaner , just pointing out that there is a glitch/bug that seems to be re appearing , as all was good before 1803 update. Same for me but using Edge, the cookies aren’t being automatically cleaned on exit even though the icon shows cleaning, I look under cookies & they’re still there. Some are saying it’s a Malwarebytes problem in that it’s affecting CCleaner but I exited the program & the problem (as well as the notification not popping up) still remains. Virginia/Bastet. Shocked Again
Wow - what an embarrassing mess. Sorry, I have a lot of forum message reading to do in effort to catch-up on what is happening. Just venting: I am shocked, today's experience with CCleaner is embarrassing. My system just spit-out a quick error message, then CCleaner disappeared. However it left some program running in the background. Got concern a virus etc was involved.. All efforts to reinstall failed (current and a couple past versions)... Tried several thing but was only successful by killing CCleaner mystery background process, removing Program file/CCleaner dir... installing 5.39 pro, license info etc. It is not reading my .ini, so I had to set everything back-up. I must have missed a "heads-up" message / email or something because this was too unprofessional. We are still unhappy with having to completely removed and reinstall everything from the OS forward due to Sev 1 issue with CCLeaner a few months ago. And now this... I assume I will now have to clean-up and reinstall all of our systems---yea
