CCleaner does NOT clean Firefox "auto-complete" history

CCleaner 5.23 (and all previous releases) does NOT clean Firefox "auto-complete" history.

I have all IE options checked, including "auto-complete form history", except "Saved Passwords". I have all Firefox options checked, except Site preferences, Saved passwords, and Compact Databases.

Yet, following a cleaning operation, the auto-complete information (triggered when typing in a URL) is still there!!

if you want, try this in ff

menu --> extras --> settings -->

1.) search --> under "standard search engine"

deactivate --> "show search suggestions in the address bar"

2.) data protection --> addressbar

deactivate --> "entries from the chronicle" + perhaps the other 2 ones.

the places.sqlite file contains all your firefox bookmarks and lists of the files you have downloaded, as well as the websites you have visited so far.

The formhistory.sqlite file stores what you searched for in the firefox search bar and what data you entered into forms on web pages.

1) There are no such settings in the current (or any recent) version of Firefox

2) Even if there were, it would only mean that the "search suggestions" wouldn't appear; not that they would be removed from history

3) The question is why CCleaner doesn't remove them

Yes, and how does that answer the question of why CCleaner doesn't remove them?

3) The question is why CCleaner doesn't remove them

1) press ALT--> the menu appears or click on the right side of ff address bar the last icon (open menu) --> click settings and you have the options above

note: i dont know what exactly are the names of english firefox menupoints (i have german)

2) i suppose.

if you want to delete the history:

settings --> data protection --> chronik --> firefox will create a chronicle: after custom settings -->

deactivate "Saves the entered search terms and form data"

and if you want

--> activate "clear the chronicle when firefox is closed" --> settings --> select what you want to delete...

3) i dont know -but as the documentation shows, it should work...

i have it tested on my pc and i mean, ccleaner works very well...

the addressbar suggestions are

1) from your chronic

2) from your bookmarks

3) from other open tabs

the chronic/history and downloads and others can be delete with ccleaner, not your bookmarks or other open tabs.

the adressbar suggestions in ff are a browser service, that you can only deactivate it in ff itselve.

the only advice i can give is:

if you dont want the url-addressbar-suggestions in ff:

- make the settings as in #2 or #8 -2)

or/and

- use the option "firefox will create a chronicle: never"

If you "have tested it on your PC", you would see that the flaw I have reported is factual, whether CCleaner works very well (otherwise) or not. The CCleaner webpage CLAIMS it cleans (removes) the autocomplete forms history, but it does NOT.  The address bar "suggestions" are History (not "chronic"), Bookmarks, and Open Tabs. After I've cleared history (with firefox or ccleaner), hundreds, perhaps thousands, of "suggestions" that are NOT bookmarks, nor open tabs, remain. I can delete these individually, with the "DELETE" key, so they can be deleted, but ccleaner is not doing so. They must be stored somewhere, and that somewhere SHOULD be cleaned, but it is not!!!

Furthermore, and once again, unchecking the three options (history, bookmarks, and open tabs) may remove the annoyance of unwanted "auto complete", but it doesn't solve the privacy issue, of deleting websites that I may (or may not) have visited in the past.

To be more specific:

After cleaning (with ccleaner) the URLs that would be displayed by clicking the "show history" down arrow to the right of the address bar ARE cleaned.

But, if you type anything in the address bar, you will see a drop-down menu of "autocomplete" items that SHOULD have been cleaned, but were not.

Try typing an "a" or "b" or any single letter, and you will be presented with a list of items, which are neither bookmarks, nor open tabs, that contain that letter. If you type a combination of letters, you will be presented with a list of items, which are neither bookmarks, nor open tabs, that contain that combination of letters. This information can be deleted by hovering over the menu entry, and pressing DELETE, but it is NOT cleaned by FF "Delete History" or by "CCleaner", despite CCleaner's CLAIM to clean "autocomplete forms data". This is obviously a bug.

So don't tell me what CCleaner is supposed to do, or that it works fine.

  • 7 months later...

I'm having the same problem that you describe, except it extends to ALL firefox settings. ccleaner isn't cleaning firefox cache, site preferences, or anything else.  So, it is an inelegant work around, but open firefox, browse the web, and before you close firefox, press ctrl-shift-del.  Choose the time range and objects to be deleted, then click Clear Now
