Support for Windows Live Mail dropped

- Starting after january 2017 MS will drop support for Windows Live Mail.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/askjack/2016/jun/02/microsoft-killing-windows-live-mail-what-should-i-do-hotmail-msn-outlook

- Does anyone still use this software ?

- I have been using the email program for a while but after say 6 months I ditched it. It was a bit of a rush job. There still some flaws in the programcode that made a mess of the file & folder structure. As time went by the amount of (sub-)folders increased. It became an outright horrible "folder jungle". And I believe that this "folder jungle" caused me to lose my stored emails. They were suddenly invisible in the program itself. Although I was able to save/rescue those emails. But it took me hours to recover those emails.

- I am still missing Outlook Express. (sob, sob). Anyone who knows if OE would run on a Win 7 system ? And is OE still to be downloaded somewhere ? From a SAFE website ? Did some GOOGLE-ing but found nothing I thought I could trust.

I also still use WLM on Win7.  Since all my email accounts are Gmail, it continues to work.  The only thing that no longer works is the calendar. Events I enter in WLM no longer sync with Outlook.com and therefore no longer sync with my cell phone calendar.

- Did a little more digging with GOOGLE and here are a number of related articles:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13785/windows-essentials-2012-release-notes

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17779/download-windows-Essentials

(This article mentions the january 2017 date)

http://www.ghacks.net/2016/05/06/windows-live-mail-2012-end-of-outlook-support/

For those who want read the "MS support" articles in their own language, one can change the language. E.g. for the german version change in this part of the URL from "/en-us/" to "/de-de/".

- I usually prefer the US ("/en-us/") or UK ("/en-uk/") english version over the dutch version ("/nl-nl/"). Because MS uses a automated translation process for these webpages. And then the dutch translation ranges from odd to (sometimes) outright unreadable.

  • 2 weeks later...

When I installed WL 2012 about 2 weeks ago.(I want to try a few parts of the suite (e.g. "MS OneDrive")) some odd things started to happen. Suddenly I was offered updates (both "Security" & "Optional") for:

- MS Works 2003 XP. (This suite still works fine on my Win 7 system).

- MS PowerPoint Viewer 2010 & Office 2010 although I don't use Office 2010, only PowerPoint Viewer 2010. (Why didn't offer MS any updates for PowerPoint Viewer earlier ?)

- MS Security Essentials (in spite of disabling the Service called "WinDefend"). Using the word in "Security" in combination with "Essentials" creates a lot of confusion. The word "Essentials" suggests that it's part of Windows Live Essentials and MSSE is not.

- Skype.

(MS bought Skype in 2011: https://www.wired.com/2011/05/microsoft-buys-skype-2/)

Odd, very odd.

apart from emailing yourself said message from Outlook then receiving it in WLM, no, not that I know of.

WLM can export straight to Outlook, but Outlook doesn't support exporting to WLM.

- All email programs are able to export emails in *.eml format. And then import them in WLM.

- Although I would ditch WLM (because it's no longer supported/updated) and switch to something else. My current favourite is Outlook Express Classic.

@willy,

Outlook cannot export to anything except another .PST file or to .CSV files.

individual email items can be saved as .MSG files.

so one, ugly, option would be to save any emails to a folder on your PC, then you have to get that .MSG file into WLM, if possible.

sometimes drag and dropping said items from folders to email software may work, but it's dependant on the type of saved email and the email software.

@ssd008,

why do you want to migrate from Outlook to WLM?

hang on..., you aren't talking outlook.com are you??? (not to be confused with the PC software called Outlook)

- OMG. Never used Outlook and not being able to export emails in *.eml format is an extra hurdle to start using the program. Seems MS wants to keep users trapped in Outlook.

- But MS also ditched Outlook.com.

Outlook is the only email client I know that has been around forever, while the others have all gone by the wayside.

maybe Thunderbird is the exception, but it can't export to Outlook either.

- But MS also ditched Outlook.com.

say what?!?  bloody hell - when did I miss that bit of news???

- Ooooops. Made a mistake. First MS disabled synchronization between Outlook.com & WLM (mid 2016 ??). And then MS dropped support for WLM (january 2017) but Outlook.com still works.

- But I wouldn't be surprised to see that MS also will drop Outlook.com somewhere in the future. See what MS did with Hotmail.com.

when MS 'acquired' Hotmail, they re-badged it to Live.com then re-badged it again to Outlook.com

I doubt they will ever get rid of it as long as the competition (Yahoo, Gmail etc) exist.

it's all embedded together with OWA (Outlook Web Access) and Skype and Exchange Online and heavily used by businesses.

but... we are talking MS, so who knows.

- Question: Does any who is reading this have experience with the free Mail app in Win 8 & Win 10 ?

- I ask because I came across some info that suggests that these apps are still a "bit buggy". And to be frank, I am not surprised because those apps are free and that could be reason why MS doesn't provide too much support for these apps. Whereas e.g. Outlook is not a free program and that's IMO a GOOD reason why MS DOES provide much better support and updates.

I experienced the same with the Windows LIve Mail 2012 program. I.e free but still a bit buggy (See the 1st post in this thread)
