High CPU usage, slow defragmentation

Recommended Posts

Hello !

Since whatever update, Defraggler uses a lot more CPU time (around 50% on a 4.1 GHz quad core CPU, but FX series so it's as if I had 2 cores)  and is sloooooow.... So slow that it takes 8h to defrag 2Go of fragmented files. I did a defragmentation for the past night, and it only defragmented 2Go of datas, which was something like 4k fragments...

I don't know why, but it's perfectly working (as fast as before) on my laptop HDD (Seagate Momentus thin i think), and is very very slow on my gaming computer (which has a WD Caviar Black 1To AND a Seagate Barracuda 500Go, both at 7200RPM)

It uses 10x more CPU this computer than on my laptop (which is a 1.6 GHz dual core CPU). Can you tell me why ?

PS : Sorry if I have a bad english... I'm french

Hi PlaysGames11.

The only thing that springs to my mind is the fact that it's a "Games Machine".

Does the computer in question contain a lot of large "save game" files, which I believe can be really large (I'm not a gamer).

If you do have pretty large files to defrag, and not sufficient contiguous free space, then any defrag program would have to work quite hard to do it's thing. And do you possibly have the setting "Move large files to end of drive" active, which would add more difficulty to the defrag?

Since whatever update, Defraggler uses a lot more CPU time ...

You don't say how much free space you have, and would a previous version do a better job?

I'm guessing as games become bigger and more complex, the "save" files are following suit.

We do have gamers on here who may confirm the above, or shoot me down in flames.   :)

I agree with the original poster.

With the newest update (2.17.898 64-bit) a Quick Defrag takes much more time than a full Defrag in earlier releases, and CPU is quite used. I Quick Defragged almost all day yesterday and am continuing this morning...

This has nothing to do with games or disk space on my computer.

Is there a way to download an earlier version of Defraggler?

Thank you for the links to the older versions.

For more detailed advice on any specific problems please start your own topic - the solution for one person could do harm for another.

I just told that I have the same problems as the OP: since update sooo slow and much CPU. No need to start a new topic.

Hello,

my hard drive is 30% full (arround 350 Go of space used), and you will be surprised to read this, but it takes way longer to defrag small files than large ones...

By gaming machine, I mean that I have gaming components, but I have the same hard drive since 2 years. Defrag was way faster before the presumed update.

I will test older versions, but it should be good if the devs could spend some times on the problem.

Reminder : my hard drive is a Western Digital Caviar Black 1To 7200RPM and a Seagate Barracuda 500Go 7200RPM

The devs do read these posts guys although they usually only respond to them if they require more information.

I'm sure they will be looking at this.

PlaysGames11, when running Defraggler did you check with TaskManager to see if another program was concurrently using much CPU? TaskManager/ Processes/ CPU and Applications

Another investigative application is Process Explorer.

Also, what is the model number of your CPU?
