CCleaner very slow (both loading and scanning)

Recommended Posts

I have CCleaner v4.07.4369, and I am using a Windows 7 64-bit pc. I recently downloaded CC v4.07.4369 over the previous version of CC, and it worked fine for a couple days. Then two days ago, when I double-clicked the CC icon on my desktop, it took forever for the program to pop up, and then when I tried to run a scan it froze at around 26% for a couple minutes. The entire scan usually takes a matter of 15-20 seconds for me, as I run it regularly to keep clutter to a minimum. I canceled the scan, closed the program, opened it again (which took a long time), and then tried to run it. Again it froze around 26%. The problem till persists. When I click on the icon it takes a while for the program to pop up on my screen, whereas it used to pop-up in seconds. When I ran CC in safe mode, it seemed to run a bit faster. I made sure the “wipe free space” box is unticked, and I made sure that I am using “normal file deletion” and not secure deletion. I uninstalled an re-installed CC, but this didn’t help. I clicked ”restored default settings” in the advanced options tab, and since then the program seems to load a little quicker, but the scan is still slow, and always freezes a bit in the 20% range. If I let it go it will finish, but it takes longer than usual. I’ve heard that some security software can interfere with CC, but I’ve had the same security setup (KIS 2014) or a while with no problems. Speaking of KIS 2014, I ran a full virus scan, which came up clean. Also, my other programs seem to work fine, it's just CC that's slow.

Sounds like it's hanging on something that's hard either big or locked.

I didn't see in the text above so:

Do you have secure deletion set in ccleaner (if yes what level)?

Do you have wipe free space checked off in advanced on ccleaner's first tab?

Please if you will run ccleaner is debug mode (I believe the instructions are available at the documents link in my signature. If not they are at the top of the bugs forum), and post the log to this thread.

I didn't see in the text above so:

Do you have secure deletion set in ccleaner (if yes what level)?

Do you have wipe free space checked off in advanced on ccleaner's first tab?

.

Please also answer in short the above questions, thank you.

Edit: I don't see any freeze here, did the freeze?

EDIT2: OK 191 seconds (a little over 3 min) seems pretty long for 18 mb. The slowest I see is firefox cache, maybe a addon is stopping firefox from properly exiting. Try to exit firefox and look for errant processes (usually firefox.exe and/or plugin-container)

No, secure file deletion is not set, just normal deletion.

No, wipe free space is not checked.

I don't think this is the problem. Sometimes Firefox does fail to close properly, but when this happens CCleaner will show me a message whuile cleaning asking if I want to close Firefox before continuing the scan, and this message did not pop up. Also, this would not explain the general slowness of the program (opening and closing it, etc.)

Perhaps either malware or malware protection is using up the processor cycles that CCleaner needs.

It might be interesting to to launch Windows Task Manager and select the Processes Tab and click on the CPU header so the largest consumers are at the top.

I have just done this and for perhaps one minute my malware protection was using 24% of available cycles.

If my protection becomes concerned when I launched CCleaner,

then the 76% that protection does not consume would be available to the rest of all software as 25% in each of 3 cores in my quad core processor,

and only 1% remaining in the core used by protection,

and if CCleaner was using the same core it would be 25 times slower in all of its thinking and doing.

This presupposes that my protection is not actually pausing every CCleaner action whilst it contemplates the wisdom of allowing that action to complete.

I do find that CCleaner is twice as quick if I disable the application activity protection "Defense+" in Comodo Security suite.

Another possibility, if all else fails, might be

To err on the side of caution I am runing another virsus scan, this time with my scanner set on High. This scan will take a lot longer than a normal scan, but I want to rule out malware as a culprit.

@Alan_B

When I started haing problems with the slowness of CCleaner I did open the Task Manger to see what the total CPU usage was (thinking that maybe someting ws hogging a lot of resources), but the CPU usage wasn't very high, ranging betwen the mid-20% and mid-40% range, even while I was dealing with the slow CCleaner, so I don't think that it's a matter of anothe application hogging resourcres.

@ dvdbane

CCleaber did seem to run faster in safe mode, but I'm still trying to figure out why it is slow outside of safe mode.

What was "mid-20% and mid-40% range" ?

Was that the amount used by the CCleaner process by itself?

or by everything other than "System Idle Process" ?

How many cores do you have ?

CCleaner may be restricted to using only one core

Also try cleaning out Internet Explorer from within Internet Explorer first as a test and see if that makes CCleaner any faster.

I see no slowdown on launch it takes less than 500 milisecond according to the log.

While you may "guess" that firefox (or chrome) closing is not the issue, I need you to actually check for the sake of troubleshooting. It does no good to ask help without doing the actual steps needed for crossing off possible causes from a (in my head) list.

Hazelnut, personally I didn't think the IE clean looked slow, did you?

Edit 1: I also don't even see an exit in the debug log, did you attach it before exiting ccleaner?

Edit2:

but I’ve had the same security setup (KIS 2014) (f)or a while

That doesn't make sense to me, as any product with the name 2014 is only a few months old; a virus/heuristic definition update is all it takes for a program to be slowed as it's intents are scan.

No I didn't think the IE cleaning was particulally slow Nergal but suggested cleaning history etc from within IE itself as part of troubleshooting.

KIS 2014 could be causing an issue as you said, perhaps if poster disables KIS as a test... ah but he did that already by cleaning in safe mode and he said it was quicker, Kis may be a reason (or part of the reason) was ccleaner is slowing down.

I quite agree that that may be a good troubleshoot, I was more concerned that I missed something (seeing as my putting it in spoiler tag removed all slashes from the log, I thought I'd make sure I didn't miss that too ;) )

I'd say look through all the KIS log files too just to make sure it isn't flagging anything related to CCleaner. Such as deeming ccleaner.exe a PUP ("not a virus") or something along those lines which isn't worth reporting to the end-user since KIS has produced a false positive detection against CCleaner in the past, if I'm remembering correctly a couple of times.

In my last post I mentioned that I was running a full system malware scan. When it was finished (it didn't find anyhting), I cleaned out IE from within IE, then made sure that Firefox and Chrome were not running in the Task Manager. When I opened CCleaner, it opened quicker, and it cleaned out 35 MB's in 55 seconds. A few minutes later I ran another scan, and this time it cleaned 13MB's in 49 seconds. Did a third scan minutes later, it cleaned 14MB's in 99 seconds. (In between scans I got on Firefox and surfed a bit, but made sure it was properly closed before startign each scan.) That last scan was a bit slow, but still better than takng 3 minutes to clean 18 MB"s. It seems slowest while cleanig Firefox. CCleaner does seem to load much quicker, taking 5 to 10 seconds from the time I double-click the icon.

EDIT: I spoke too soon, perhaps. I did some stuff on the web, then decided to run CCleaner again, and it took about 45 seconds to load. When I started the scan, after about 2 minutes it was still at around 27%, when I canceled the scan, whereupon it froze and I had to close the program by stopping the process in theTask Manager. First it seemed to stick for a while while cleaning "taskbar jump lists", and then it slowed down again while cleaning Firefox. I'm going to try unistalling/reinstalling CCleaner again.

EDIT 2: After re-nistalling, first time I opened CCleaner, the program popped up quickly, but the "analyze" and "run cleaner' buttons remained grayed-out/unclickable for about a full minute. I closed the program. Since then I've tried two more times, and they are only grayed-out for a couple of seconds, and the ensuing two scans have gone relatively quckly.

Just to answer a couple of the questions I was asked:

What was "mid-20% and mid-40% range" ?

Was that the amount used by the CCleaner process by itself?

or by everything other than "System Idle Process" ?

It was all processes combined (other than System Idle Process).

How many cores do you have ?

CCleaner may be restricted to using only one core

Accoridng to CPU-Z, I have 2 cores.

I also don't even see an exit in the debug log, did you attach it before exiting ccleaner?

I don't remember, but I made have opened the log and copy/pasted it while CCleaner was still open (but had finished scanning).

did you update your KIS?

some user in other forum report that KIS14 without patch really slow down their pc

the latest patch would be B..try update to get that patch

currently running KIS13 without a problem here

what FF version that you running right now?

If dvdbane's good suggestion doesn't give results perhaps try (as a test only) putting ccleaner64.exe in Kis exclusion zone. Reboot before use of ccleaner.

One other thing to try that could cause the scanning/cleaning process to take longer is 'Compact Databases' listed in CCleaner at 'Cleaner > Applications > Firefox'. You could untick 'Compact Databases' and then see how it goes after that - of course doing this won't remedy the application loading speed.

Then again with it being so slow when scanning Firefox I wonder if it has something to do with your Firefox profile.

I've udated KIS daily. I was runing FF 24 when this started, but have since updated to FF 25.

If dvdbane's good suggestion doesn't give results perhaps try (as a test only) putting ccleaner64.exe in Kis exclusion zone. Reboot before use of ccleaner.

I added it to the exclusion list, rebooted, then tried to run CCleaner. I had the Task Manager open while I double-clicked the CCleaner icon. First the process ccleaner.exe*32 appeared in the running processes list, and after about 15 seconds ccleaner.exe*32 was replaced by ccleaner64.exe. Even though the process was listed, it still took about 45 seconds for CCleaner to actually appear on my screen, after which the "Analyze" and :"Run Cleaner" buttons remained unclickable for about a minute and a half. I closed CCleaner and clciked the icon agan. This time CCleaner started quickly, but when I ran a scan it took 275 seconds (about 4 1/2 minutes) to clean 14.6 MB. I kept my eyes on the Task Manger while it was running, and total CPU Usage (all processes) remained below 35%.

One other thing to try that could cause the scanning/cleaning process to take longer is 'Compact Databases'

I checked, and that option is already unticked.

Then again with it being so slow when scanning Firefox I wonder if it has something to do with your Firefox profile.

As I've run the scans, I've noticed the three places it seems to go the slowest is when cleaning Firefox, cleaning Google Chrome, and cleaning Taskbar Jump Lists.

Ok I have an idea for your perceived slow start based on your last post. Right click the shortcut you use to open cclean and choose properties.

In the box that says target, change the target to the ccleaner64 exe instead of ccleaner exe.

The should bypass the handover from 32 to 64 which seems to be having trouble

I am in full agreement with Nergal

I have CCleaner v4.07.4369, and I am using a Windows 7 64-bit pc. I recently downloaded CC v4.07.4369 over the previous version of CC

That is NOT the correct terminology for the correct procedure, and it cannot happen that way.

You can download either the Portable ZIP or the Installer version of CC to a SEPARATE download folder, and then you are able to :-

Unzip the Portable version over the previous Portable version of CC; or

Install the Installer version over the previous version of CC.

If you really downloaded over the previous version of CC that would totally corrupt the old version,

and if you then unzipped/installed to the same place all settings would be trashed,

and starting the 32 bit version before handing over to the 64 bit version would be the least of your troubles,

and you really need to fully uninstall/remove the old and then download and start again properly.

I only use the portable version of CC,

and it is my experience that if I unzip both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions in the same folder,

then I can double click the 32 bit version and it immediately recognises that I have a 64 bit computer so it hands over immediately to the 64 bit version.

I have to rename CCleaner64.exe as CCleaner64.bin, or delete it, before I can use the 32 bit version to clean the 32 bit part of the system.

I do not think the Portable version is likely to have caused an error in the start-target.

If you used the Installer version then perhaps that has a bug and thought it was installing under a 32 bit system and so it fixed the start-target wrongly.

@Nergal

I checked, and the target already is (copy/pasted):

"C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner64.exe"

@Alan_B

Perhaps I used the wrong terminology. I downloaded the ccleaner .exe file from filehippo, double-clicked it and ran it. What I meant was that I didn't uninstall the old version of CC first, which I never have done. However, since this all started I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled CCleaner twice.

Have you tried saving the settings to INI file. This would remove all settings from the registry and save them to an INI file in the CCleaner folder, making the program portable.

Options > Advanced > Check box for "Save all settings to INI file".

If that doesn't help, try going back one version to 4.06.4324. You can install it over the top of the current version.

Last night I ran a scan before turning off my computer, and it ran quickly. Then this morning I tried to run a scan, and it was slow. It seems that 95% of the time it is slow, but every once in a while CCleaner will open and run smoothly.

@Jamin4u

Have you tried saving the settings to INI file.

Tried it, and it didn't work.

If that doesn't help, try going back one version to 4.06.4324

With the old version (4.06.4324), the first time I ran it it was slow to open, and the scan took one minute to clean 7MB. Second scan, it opened quickly and took just a few seconds to clean 2MB. This seems to hold with what I wrote above in this post--sometimes it will run quickly, but mostly it is slow.

Thanks again to everyone for trying to help me with this. I'm beginning to think I may just have to deal with a slow CCleaner.

You proved that it's not just the new version of CCleaner that's running slow for you.

Since you weren't having any problems until around the 29th of October, I'd look at any new programs or updates to existing programs. For example, Firefox 25.0 was just released on the 29th. If your running V25.0., CCleaner could be having a problem cleaning it.
