Long time to open

Recommended Posts

Hello finnipinni. I have a machine similar to yours and noticed the same thing happening, but only if I tried to start CCleaner right after booting Windows 8. Keep in mind that Windows 8 uses a new process called "hybrid boot". An article on the subject is here: http://www.zdnet.com/windows-8-hybrid-mode-brings-faster-boot-3040093896/

I personally think that this is done to give the user the impression that Windows 8 starts very quickly, when in fact Windows 8 is still going through the boot process long after the Metro screen appears. Trying to start CCleaner under these conditions could be the reason for the long delay.

Thanks for answering to this topic.

I'm aware of W8 delayed starting process. Topic happens all the time.

And I have no installed AntiVirus - I do fine withoutit :)

This happened after an W8 update, but i don't know if there is a connection there.

Seemes like I'm alone on this topic - are there other issues that may effect the upstart time ?

Yep, there sure is, THEY ARE CALLED INFECTIONS.

Malware, viruses, keyloggers, just to mention the main players.

I take it your PC is not connected to a network, no CD's or USB's get inserted and no other user but you has access.

If so, no AV just may be a passable option.

But hang on, you mention you got Win8 updates, so you are connected online, which leaves your PC open to a multitude of possibilities that can effect everything and anything - including startup times.

Asking members for help, knowing you have no AV, may not be the most prudent use of problem solving your own issue first before seeking advice.

Rule out that possibility first.

Between Windows Defender and SmartScreen, Windows 8 states it is protected.

I took the statement the OP has no installed AV literally (and maybe wrongly) and figured even that level of protection has been removed.

Even so Microsoft recently shifted away from considering MSE/Defender as good as it was. http://lifehacker.com/microsoft-admits-that-third-party-antivirus-is-more-eff-1441135677

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.

Without wishing to stir anything up Nergal the original remark by Holly Stewart was taken out of context leading to a raft of websites reporting this about MSE.

Now you appear rather obnoxious in your response,

and unbelievably foolish in dismissing the possibility of Malware.

I do not believe that when you posted on the 6th you had already installed the Patch Tuesday updates that were issued today and which affect Windows 8.1.

Now let's get back on track here, calm down, and no more name calling or potential insults.

I am unsure why Alan_B mentions Windows 8.1 as I don't see any mention of it in any of the original posters posts.

@ finnipinni....

Did this issue start happening after Septembers Windows updates?

What do you have ccleaner set to do at startup?

Does the same delay happen with ccleaner if you run it at other times?

Do you have any Winapp2.ini entries?

Do you have any security software running in realtime?

How do you ensure you are virus/malware free ?

Have you added any new software in the last month which runs at startup?

.

I mentioned 8.1 because it ought to be safer than 8.0

and although finnipinni refers to W8 it was not clear to me that he was excluding 8.1.

Regardless, both 8.1 and 8.0 and all other versions of Windows are vulnerable.

You need these updates if you're running any currently supported, 32-bit or 64-bit, Windows operating system: Windows 8 (including Windows 8.1),

Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP, plus Windows server versions and Windows RT.

If you look in the Windows Event Viewer under 'system' and also 'application' are there any entries which co-inside with the time that you try to run ccleaner?

Which version of ccleaner are you running, the full, the slim or the portable?

May be worth trying a debug run of ccleaner

This is a smallform mobo I got from a friend. I have run SFC several times and files should be ok.

One red mark that I not have managed to rectifie : ID 137, Altred CPU in restingperiod for memory type (MTRR) This may reduce performance on resume - probably bad translation from Norwegian.

But this is no co-timing with opening CC. Opening other programs has no timedelay.

I just installed new updates from MS and it did not alter this issue.

CC version is 4.06.4324 - 64bit

De-bug run of CC I have no expirience with. Please explain eventual bad consequenses, if any.

This is turning tobe a matter for this computer only. I apriciate all the help I can get, but will understand if it is concidered to be outside matters for this fora.

No bad consequences from running debug.

I meant which 'type' of ccleaner installer did you use

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds

Perhpas uninstall ccleaner, and try slim version or portable version and see if issue still happens.

I understand that when ccleaner runs, it works okay..

We just need to try and find out why ccleaner waits so long before it opens.

The debug log might tell us that.

The debug looks for problems with ccleaner (not with your machine)

If you don't want to run it don't worry about it :)
