I've seen those gobbly-gook named folder before, usually leftover from an installation.

if I see them I blow them away, most a 'locked' and you have to go into the Security Tab and give Ownership/Auditing/Permission to the Everyone user.

I'm sure there is an easier way, but the one works for me.

Thanks, mta. I'll let that post ride a while, then go after the folder.

I have seen similar files also, but never locked up like this one is.

With the win xp computer in safe mode, or the win 8 computer?

Haven't tried either one yet.

Was about use unlocker, but will wait a bit.

Sounds like you already know something about this situation. Care to share? :D < < persuasive, winning, smile.

Will try unlocker first.

If its a nogo, then safe mode.

If thats a nogo, Puppy linux on the win xp computer. (only one that will still boot the Puppy. :( )

Whatever happens, when the folder is gone, I'll hook up the USB hdd to win 8 again and see what happens.

Edit: must say I sort of like win 8. If microsoft publishes a method for reverting it to a normal desktop type OS, that would be great.

Edit 2: Unlocker ver. 1.8.9 deleted them to the recycle bin. CCleaner removed the remains from there. This was on the win xp computer.

You were right, Hazel.

Unlocker appears to have moved it to the recycle bin for the USB hdd, where it is stuck.

Still after it. Back to safe mode.

Edit: Got'em! MMUUuuAAaahaahaahaa.

OK, am being a bit silly, been a while since I got after a stubborn folder.

There were 2 folders: dj19 and dj20 in the recycler. Removed their attributes, then used unlocker to move the stuck folders to My Documents, where they deleted normally.

But seriously, can I expect the win 8 computer to do something like this to any USB hdd that connects to it?

Didn't find much on Google. Still looking.

Had no problems myself with usb hard drives on Win 8. I use one to keep an image on after using the built-in Win 8 imager.

Any usb hard drive I attach new to a pc always gets a quick format first as I don't like some of the folders and things that sometimes come pre-installed on them.

Two questions, if I may. I have googled until I'm goggled, can't find anything definitive.

Is anybody running Sandboxie in win 8 with ie 10? I got a warning about conflicts when I tried to install it. Been to the SBIE forums.

What sort of firewall works well w/ win 8 ie 10. Got the same warning about Outpost. Been to the Outpost forums also.

I like win 8 too.

I am running Sbie on Win 8 with IE10.. no problems.

What warning do you get, a Windows warning or a Sbie warning?

Are you using Sbie 3.76 or beta version 4.0.01.04?

I'm using it with Windows Firewall alongside Emsisoft Anti Malware (It's a full AV in spite of the name)

It was a windows warning for 3.76, didn't have time record it.

Ver 4 is working, along with Avast! AV and windows firewall.

Going to try Outpost firewall again, would sort of like a firewall that controls both ways.

Just getting started with win 8, it's not so bad, just need time to learn it.

Thank you, Hazel.

edit: The warning for SBIE looked like this one for Outpost firewall. Outpost may not work.

I had avoided ver SBIE 4 because it is in beta, but now it works OK here.

I installed SBIE ver 3.76 twice.

Second time, did not get the windows warning. Instead got this popup saying disregard the windows warning.

However, ver 3.76 did not work.

It installed and the system tray and desktop icons appeared.

Clicking on them made something ?? happen, but didn't hook up to the net.

Restarted 2 or 3 times. Made sure the network connections were active

Several SBIE functions were running, but no hookup to the net.

The beta versions of Sbie are usually quite safe and I install them as soon as they come out.

Glad to hear you are getting to grips with Win 8. Nothing like a new OS to get the old grey cells screaming

I have no probs with SB 3.76. I seem to remember the warning message and I looked it up at the time. I'm with IE10 and Win firewall.

Yes, one gets used to W8 in time. I would miss the fast startup/shutdown if I reverted, which I won't.

Getting too old for this. The few grey cells left have their little hands full just getting the coffee made in the morning. :P
