Anyone have any problems using MVPS hosts file in Windows 8?

Thought I'd ask before doing it. I know that you have to exclude the Hosts file from monitoring in Windows Defender or else it will see it as a malicious change.

I've had no problems on Windows 8 Pro x64

Same operating system as me.

I installed the free Media Center and am using TunerFreeMCE on it so I can watch all UK channels without a TV tuner on my machine

The start up and shut down times of Win 8 are very, very good. I must admit to quite liking it Win8 :)

I've disabled Defender and have put Emsisoft Anti Malware on it instead as my main av, and have noticed no real slowdowns and conflicts with it so far.

At the moment I am running with a local account instead of a Microsoft one.

Watching streaming TV isn't so bad I suppose.

I like the tv hardware better, because if your mobile or without access to the web, you can still watch tv.

What's your startup/shutdown of Windows 8 times?

My netbook has Windows 7 & shuts down in about 11 seconds/boots in about 35.

I happened to think of that, after I posted.

How much of Windows 8 speed on boot/shutdown is due to Windows 8, & how much is due to having SSD installed?

I noted that in Walmart the other day, they had some new ultrabooks with 20 GB SSD + 500 GB HDD. (OS on SSD).

I am sure that having Windows 8 on SSD does wonders for startup & shutdown, seeing that it is 5 or 10 times faster than HDD, depending on the SSD.

My netbook has a 5,400 RPM HDD. Just updating to 7,200 RPM gives you around 2x faster read & writes. SSD? Probably much greater!

Would 7 beat 8, installed on SSD drive? Who knows! It would be interesting to find out. Maybe I'll find time to experiment one day, :)

I have 7 on an SSD and 8 on a 7200RPM hdd, so if you really want the answer, I can tell you :P

The only issue I've run into on Windows 8 so far is that MYST: Masterpiece Edition crashes if you click on anything in the clock tower. The issue is also present on Windows 7

My boot time and shutdown speed as I said is very fast, the fastest I've ever had on a MS operating system.

I am not using SSD just an ordinary hard drive.

Have MS screenshot snip pinned to taskbar.

I've also made a system image using the MS built-in imager

running it in compatibility mode with 98 / ME works and fixes the issue on W7, haven't tried 8 yet but I expect it'll be the same.

I usually run in XP mode when I debug things, but I guess I didn't allow for the older age of MYST.

The problem with win8 is much more than just the start menu. The problem is that the design isn't intuitive at all. Ask a new user to shut down a windows 8 computer. It will take them a while. You have to bring up the charms bar with a keyboard shortcut or a specific mouse gesture. How is that better then a start button? Same thing with applications. The windows 8 menu hides the desktop applications. First thing I wanted to see when I installed Windows 8 was if they changed paint or notepad in any way. It took me a little while to find the applications menu. Sure I could have just typed but that's not how I normally launch programs.

Sure once you know these things you can use the OS just fine, but these fell like change just for the sake of change.

I currently have a love hate thing going on with win8. Depends on the day how I feel. :)

I understand in a way what you are getting at rridgely, at times you have to really put your brain in gear :)

Things that I use quite a bit such as notepad and paint I have just gone to the executable for it and selected 'sent to desktop' so it's always there when I want it. That's actually pretty much how I've done it on other OS's.

It's a real brain-stirrer that you cannot boot to safe mode using F8

I've said multiple times since I started using Win8 - It desperately needs a tutorial. They shoved it down your throat with XP, but they really needed it for Windows 8. I mean, once you get the gist of it its fine, but just plopping you down in unfamiliar territory and saying go is weird.

If Microsoft wanted to grab a ton of 13 year olds, they would make a Call of Duty Windows version

Perhaps, but it may be adults shooting RPGs at the screen.

I've played more than enough with Win8 on store laptops, and have to say I wouldn't use it, for me it's like a bad song on a CD, I'll just skip it!

As you know with hybrid sleep most times you never get the traditional cold boot when you use your machine.

This little shortcut allows you to fully shut down yout machine for those times when you feel you need to.
