The Firefox/Mozilla Thread

Looks like it's gone for good https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2014/03/14/metro/ I played around with it for awhile but the lack of plugin/addon support kept me on the desktop version.

Mozilla have given up  a hopelesss battle against superior competitors for an unwanted and failing metro experience.

That is my interpretation of

we have to pick our battles. We’re not as tiny as we were when we shipped Firefox 1.0, but we still need to focus on the projects with the most impact for our mission; the massive scale of our competitors and of the work to be done requires us to marshal our forces appropriately.

 and

we’ve never seen more than 1000 active daily users in the Metro environment.

FWIW Australis is now in BETA and HOLLY (the australis free builds) have been discontinued. Australis is currently on track for release with Firefox 29

What's the betting it gets held back for the nice round number of 30 ^_^

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised. Mozilla is king of not delivering on time (though Facebook seems to be rivaling them in recent years)

But for now, they've been good about moving it from Nightly to Beta, though it was in UX for a really long time (started as a test build in Jul 2012, I think it graduated to the UX build in Nov of 2012, moved to Nightly in Nov 2013)

Firefox 29 is out

I like the change in the moblie menu (two shares shown and a more prominent favorites button)

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.

I really don't like the changes!

Luckily the extension Classic Theme Restorer (Customize Australis) can very easily make it look like v28! That extension also instantly fixed/repaired the "Exit Customize" button since it was initially broken and didn't work which was forcing a full exit and restart of Firefox in order to get the new and broken in my case "Customize" display to exit.

Thankfully I kept a screenshot of exactly how I have everything layed out! That screenshot allowed me to fully fix their annoying goofing around and moving around of how I had things.

Oh God! they've made it look like Chrome.

Yeah, they've gone from being a leader to a follower in recent times, this just puts the cherry on the top - removing everything that made them popular till they blend into the background as just another browser (along with every other browser also jumping on the Chrome bandwagon) with nothing unique or original about it

The interface redesign (Australis) is largely unpopular due to looking like Chrome, though I personally like it. They removed some stuff, but I think the major purpose behind it was to streamline the code powering a decade old code structure behind the UI, and reduce jank as a result. Also to bring the desktop UI in line with the mobile one a la windows 8.

Shorlander tweeted me a few months ago that the dark UI I posted a few pages back was slated to be in the works after Australis P1 lands, so that should be up and coming within the next few versions maybe (I'll let you know if anything hits mozilla central, which I use as my daily driver)

There was a mockup for a dark australis theme set to become the private mode theme, but I really really really hope it becomes an anytime option because it looks really nice.

they don't even show their logo or name anywhere - that's just weird.

I have Firefox installed on Linux Mint and got the updates from the repository this afternoon. I installed them without realizing there was such a radical change, and what a sinking feeling I had when I first looked at it. At least it does not cover over the desktop's taskbar the way Chrome does, that is one of the features I really dislike about Chrome.

My firefox does, but because I have the windows border density set to 1px and the taskbar disabled in my second and third monitors, and move my windows between monitors with SHIFT+Win. When you do this, the window doesn't compensate for the task bar and covers it <_<

The new customize page is a tab, you can close it like any other tab if you have that problem again in the future

It wouldn't close at all from within Firefox v29, and trying to close it as a "tab" never worked either. That extension I mentioned is suppose to fix some things.

Firefox Version 29 has driven more people into the welcoming arms of Palemoon,

which keeps up with all security fixes,

but gives stability to user experience.

@Derek

Palemoon also runs under Linux

I feel bad for Pale Moon developer (I use that term lightly, as all he really does is copy+paste and compile). His entire userbase is comprised of the impossible-to-please vocal minority.

I'm Shane.

Thank you for the links Alan. I had no idea that Palemoon was available for Linux. If it's available as a .tar package, then I shouldn't have any problems with the installation.
