Moderators Andavari Posted June 20, 2011 Moderators Share Posted June 20, 2011 It's technically still a beta, see here why it's a good ideal to wait for Mozilla to post it as available which is expected to be tomorrow.

Winapp2.ini
Why not update to four? It's quite a bit faster than its older brother 3.6! winapp2.ini additions thread winapp2.ini github
JDPower
Why not update to four? It's quite a bit faster than its older brother 3.6! Pure laziness to be honest, always like to do a clean install of major updates and just haven't got round to it
Corona
What does FF5 got that FF4 doesn't?
JDPower
What does FF5 got that FF4 doesn't? AFAIK its not a huge change as they are going down the Chrome route of making every update a major number change (so by old versioning this would probably have been FF4.1). Its supposed to be a bit lighter on resource usage and have some privacy improvements but don't think there's anything major.

Winapp2.ini
Memory usage improvements, performance enhancements, etc. That's about it, no major features have been implemented yet. winapp2.ini additions thread winapp2.ini github
Moderators Andavari Posted June 21, 2011 Moderators Share Posted June 21, 2011 It's officially released now, I had the little update pop-up appear in Firefox and it's now hosted on Mozilla.com for downloading.

Corona
When I look at the add-on site and see a total of about 26 add-ons compatible with FF5 and none of them are the ones I use, I think I'll use FF4 for the rest of the year and check back then. Oh wait, I went to the wrong page, or something. The add-on site keeps confusing extensions and add-ons. Hmm, maybe I will try out FF5.
Winapp2.ini
All of my addons have been working fine with firefox 5, aurora and nightly too. I think it's still up to the developers to confirm that it works, so things seem to take some time. winapp2.ini additions thread winapp2.ini github
Corona
All of the ones I used still work with FF5. So I installed it. I'm good to go. And I MozBackupped it.
Winapp2.ini
Apparently there are "over 1000" under-the-hood improvements to 5 over 4, and 5 beats Chrome in <insert benchmarks here> Of course, benchmarks are getting to the point where a 1ms difference is "winning" winapp2.ini additions thread winapp2.ini github
Moderators Andavari Posted June 21, 2011 Moderators Share Posted June 21, 2011 What does FF5 got that FF4 doesn't? A number 5 in the version. Seriously see here. I did a clean install earlier, and can't tell a difference between version 4. By the way there's no reason not to update, not even for the lazy bunch (other than being lazy). Winapp2.ini
I think Firefox 5 should work a bit better on slower machines, due to the memory handling and performance improvements Haven't had a chance to test yet on a slower machine. winapp2.ini additions thread winapp2.ini github

Aethec
I don't like their new release schedule...from a user's point of view, nothing was added. Piriform French translator
Moderators Andavari Posted June 22, 2011 Moderators Share Posted June 22, 2011 I think Firefox 5 should work a bit better on slower machines, due to the memory handling and performance improvements I don't have a slower machine and don't know if it specifically runs differently on a lower spec system however from version 4 and now 5 it consumes gobs more memory now, especially with multiple instances of plugin-container.exe but at least those extra processes means a plugin won't usually crash/freeze the whole browser. Albeit the only plugin related issues I've ever had are from Adobe Flash Player.
JDPower
I don't like their new release schedule...from a user's point of view, nothing was added. Me either, just stupidly following Chrome's approach for no apparent reason. however from version 4 and now 5 it consumes gobs more memory now That's interesting given that's the exact opposite of what they are claiming V5 is supposed to do
Winapp2.ini
I think the idea of the new release schedule is to get smaller improvements out quicker, instead of once every year and a half bundled with hundreds of other improvements. winapp2.ini additions thread winapp2.ini github
