windows disk defragmenter no longer works

Recommended Posts

I did exactly as it said and backed up as it showed. I went to go defragment using windows defrangmenter that comes with my windows xp system. It did not work. I went to the back up in documents and did as was suppose to and still would not work, even after restarting. It tells me: MMC cannot open file C:\WINDOWSsystem32\dfrg.msc. This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file.

I am set as owner and am only profile on this computer. I have full rights to this computer and full access. Windows Xp Sp2. I will not be pleased or happy if I have to do another computer restore to an earlier point. Is there some way of fixing this without doing a restore? Please help me.

Can you run MSCONFIG.msc or SERVICES.msc?

Something else to keep in mind is that it can also stop working if there's a scheduled ChkDsk which hasn't yet been performed, and if the volume is marked as dirty.
