Still 53% fragmented?

Vista laptop. 1st ran Windows Defrag overnight, then d/l'd Defraggler. Analyse = 53% so ran full defrag over many hours. Shows complete but next analyse still shows 53% fragmented. Have now Defragglered about 4 times & it still lists 53% fragmented. Not sure what other info you might need to explain this to me. NTFS 230GB harddrive, 163GB free. I read through the help docs but didn't find this issue described.

Thanks!

Gail

>>Is your freespace really fragmented? What files are they? Do they belong to the folder System Volume Information?<<<

>>Which files are the ones that remain fragmented? Could you provide a list of the biggest ones? <<<<

Cookideater & Winapp2.ini: I didn't defrag the freespace. Is that what is causing the 53% remark? The laptop had to go on a vacation, so I have to wait until it's return next week to get the list of files. I do remember System Volume Information listed among them. I post again when I have the list of files.

Thanks for the replies.

HI...had this issue with all my PC's XP Pro -Win 7 Pro - XP Home Edition. Found the following to eliminate the massive fragmented issues after degrag:

Under Action/Advanced...run Check drive for errors (may not be necessary but I do this step as #1 anyway)

Run CMD as Administrator - then type the following: chkdsk /f

Select 'Y' from y/n options

Type exit

When you reboot Windows will run a disk check and minor repair operation...when windows loads...try Defraggler again. 99.9% of the time all my systems analyze/defrag without errors.

Note: most of my fragmentation before running above steps is also System Volume Information...but not always...also have to do above steps after weekly backup or I also get 20-50% fragmentations after system backup is run.

Hope this is helpful...??

That is helpful TRinAZ.

Does the "checkdisk" process usually find errors when you do that? This might be an over reaction on my part, but do you have any form of System Drive back ups.

I say that only because it's worth having back ups if there is only the faintest trace of something not being 100%.

Just a thought, and you've probably already got that covered.
