Deleting settings.sol removes the user's total security settings for FlashPlayer, doesn't it (See link below)? It just doesn't remove "sites". This doesn't seem like a very good idea to me.

It isn't a good idea, you are correct (thus my long warning text attached to it). However it is so often requested that I edited my old entry. Feel free to change the warning to something more warningish though :)

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.

Hi,

I hope this is the right place to ask but is it possible to add an entry to the winapp2.ini file to remove the Recent Documents from OpenOffice 3.3.0? I've done a search on the forums but can't find anything recent.

Cheers.

It seems that .NET updates leave huge log files at those locations, could you please add those lines bellow. Thank you!

Winapp2.ini, do you think you can see about adding this to your file?

Dunno why its not been officially implemented, 2.24 MB is allot!!!

You consider them safe for your Spanish system, are you sure they are safe for everyone ?

What were the investigations that led you to this belief ?

You say they are CAT files that are no longer needed - in my view a very bold statement.

My XP system failed to accept a .NET framework Patch Tuesday Security Update.

After many failed attempts, and several phone calls to Microsoft Support,

the final solution was to uninstall All .NET stuff from the latest down to the earliest, and then re-install.

That also failed.

It was NOT possible because the uninstaller aborted without explanation.

I downloaded a "user" tool to strip .NET Framework from the system,

and this reported that a Catalogue file was absent so it did not know the install sequence and could not remove in reverse,

but even so it took out all .NET Framework - and a registry check showed thousands of missing shared DLLs.

Then I installed .NET Framework with no apparent errors, and most BUT NOT ALL missing shared DLL's were fixed.

I deduced that the "user" tool wrongfully removed DLL's which were also needed by other applications,

and the new install of .NET added the shared DLL's which the new .NET needed,

but knew nothing about the wrongfully removed DLL's, so random applications could crash in the future.

I chose to restore the partition image as the system had been before I attempted to fix the failure to install an update.

It is probable that a CAT file will never seem to be needed, but upon upgrade/removal it may become essential.

But the *.tmp duplicates may be redundant.

CAT files that sign other files are officially stored (and you can find the duplicate files I mentioned installed) in %WinDir%\system32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}, you can then compare them with any MD5 file verifier on ANY language edition of XP and you will get the same results (MD5's will differ from language to language)

You can also rename the TMP files to CAT and open them to see they are indeed CAT files (you can also right click them and see a digital signature tab)

These catalog files are applied/installed during XP setup via the syssetup.inf ProductCatalogsToInstall section but for some reason they are not deleted after

[ProductCatalogsToInstall]
NT5INF.CAT, 1
NT5.CAT
SP3.CAT
NTPRINT.CAT
NT5IIS.CAT
MAPIMIG.CAT
FP4.CAT
IMS.CAT
MSMSGS.CAT

HPCRDP.CAT

MW770.CAT

wmerrenu.cat

IASNT4.CAT
MSTSWEB.CAT
OEMBIOS.CAT
tabletpc.cat
mediactr.cat

netfx.cat

If you are still unsure they are junk then you can delete them, then run sigverif.exe to scan your entire HDD and see that many/most of the XP system files are still signed by the CAT's I list (SP3.CAT, NTPRINT.CAT, IMS.CAT)

Your .net error is irrelevant to this subject

I've been messing around testing out this MSE antivirus to see how well it actually works. I also just tried out this .ini file you work on as well but after doing so, this MSE keeps turning orange and telling me that my computer hasn't been scanned in a while. Of course, that's wrong because it gets scanned daily so I'm wondering if this listing that you're calling Microsoft Antimalware scan results and Microsoft Antimalware logs in the applications section are actually messing with MSE and erasing it's references?

Thanks

Probably not very wise to fudge around with the thought process of the users antivirus software. MSE is a different kind of beast in how it works relevant to the OS as opposed to other av's. Whatever though. I'll just remove the .ini file. Thanks for explaining that.
