Hosts File Update

Bit of a bump, but still... Amazing what you can actually do with the hosts file. Circumvent the block on Pirate Bay, to preventing software from trying to access an activation server...

Does this mean a fully cross browser compliant adblock?

If I run the batch file does it just add the entries or does it overwrite the entire file?

Anything in the HOSTS file will be respected by anything that uses the Internet on your computer, i.e.; some malware authors can use it to prevent people from being able to download legit anti-virus/anti-malware software and vice versa we can block the malicious websites along with those serving advertisements. But with a HOSTS file you can not use wildcards or expressions like an adblock in a web browser can and you need the exact web address to block something.

If running the MVPS batch file installer it will overwrite your current HOSTS file. To prevent overwriting you'd need to use a HOSTS manager such as HostsMan (freeware).

just curiuos, do you know if the updates are regular (monthly or something) or they just do them whenever they have a bunch of HOST additions ?

+1 dennis, that's one of the nice side-effects of this forum, a good place to get the heads-up of new releases.

a suggestion maybe.

could a thread, maybe in Announcements, be started for each of these update reminders; like for Notepad++, Foobar and the others that are getting reported like this.

and what are the forum rules for announcing stuff on non-piriform products. for example, i noticed a couple of days ago a MalWareBytes new version released, is a new thread for this product worthy?

I also update via the 'View New Content' page.

I do have to remove a few entries though, as I watch videos on Cinemassacre from time-to-time and MVPS hosts blocks the video player for some reason.

if you use hostXPert http://www.funkytoad.com/index.php?option=com_content&id=13 you can keep a white list; download (replace) the old for new (in app) and then have it remove whitelisted items. Also is portable

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.

@nergal, thanks for that heads-up, i've just being using it and it seems very adequate, even goes and gets the MVPS updates for you.

the whitelist function is a good plus.

overall, a nice, comprehensive GUI to the HOSTS file.

It's only for official Piriform announcements, with further proof being that only the Piriform owner starts topics in there.

One entry guilty of blocking video players is "ad.doubleclick.net".

I will never unblock that site. When sites are doing free giveaways, sweepstakes, etc., and if they use DoubleClick as the sign-up point I'll gladly pass on getting any free stuff.

thanks Andavari, it was just an idea.

I've started a thread for it in Software.

do they do a changelog?

not that big a deal, it'll just save doing a scan myself to see what has changed.
