Recommended Posts

I just noticed that I've tried HostsXpert a long time ago and then found HostsMan which was better for my use. Also HostsXpert ain't getting any updates anymore. :i

in HostXpert, clicking Download, MVPs Hosts, Check for update, shows my last download Oct '13 and Current file date 9th Jan '14.

So it's working for me (and I will get that update too :))

Backup now & backup often.

I always manually download the updates because I keep the original HOSTS file downloads off of drive C: on my other hard disk. Then via a batch file I combine them (my HOSTS file's, MVPS, etc.,) on my other hard disk, and then use another batch file to copy them over to drive C:. Then finally I have HostsXpert sort the file getting rid of all the comments, etc.

i guess funkytoad has either moved on or can't think of anything else to add to HostXperts functionality.

He may have moved on as he used to be responsive to my emails about Homer but when it broke in '11 I couldn't get a hold of him. But hostxpert really doesn't need updating imho

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.

and for those on Vista and above, it shouldn't matter if it's 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.1

i no longer have any XP machines but still, by default change them all to 127.0.0.1 will no ill effect.

Hmm!?!  I'm not seeing any strange results on my one lone XP machine.

Do you have this in your HOSTS file though, so it knows how to handle 0.0.0.0:

0.0.0.0 localhost

Really to make a HOSTS file understand all of what's floating about these should be the first entries:

0.0.0.0 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1  localhost #[IPv6]

Only thing though is MVPS doesn't include this entry which I always thought was necessary/required from all the HOSTS file stuff I've learned off sites over the years:

0.0.0.0 localhost

For myself and DennisD we probably would've never encountered a problem with their HOSTS file not working if only they had included the required: 0.0.0.0 localhost

Just my understanding of it.

I'm using "HostsMan" to manage my Hosts File, and there does seem to be a setting, which I have to confess I've only just noticed, that converts any 0.0.0.0 imports to 127.0.0.1 ...

I'll know next update as to whether this does the trick.

Thank-you!

I have both... the thought never occurred to simply add '0.0.0.0 localhost'

The only reason I even knew that was because of all the hosts files I've used over the past 10+ years, which is why the MVPS one had me thinking why they don't have that included so as to not break their own hosts file causing issues like those DennisD posted about.
