Slow defrag, repeat, file placement

For the second time, I've lost over 100gb in shadow copies while running Defraggler. I've changed some settings in the registry to try to prevent this in the future, but I'd like to make a suggestion... Add a "slow" defrag option that allows reducing Defraggler's disk I/O. Maybe add some settings to go along with the feature like time to wait between files and automatically pausing when other disk and/or CPU activity increases.

 

A repeat option to reanalyze and restart the defrag when done or after a certain period of time would be nice. I know there's a schedule option, but I prefer not to use that.

 

The expensive defrag program I use in addition to Defraggler seems to have trouble since I got close to 1 million files. It takes a few minutes to analyze and then crashes. Watching the status in Defraggler, it appears to take a few seconds per file. Defraggler has slowed down as the number of files on the disk increased and it uses quite a bit of CPU time, now, but doesn't seem to interfere with anything else or crash. It's still going strong. I'm just concerned about the disk I/O causing the loss of shadow copies again.

 

This is from the event log: "The shadow copies of volume C: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time. Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied."

 

Since I can't use the other defrag program any more, I really would like to see some more flexibility on file placement in Defraggler. I'd like to be able to move certain files (by extension) and folders+subfolders to the middle or end of the drive. Maybe move them based on last accessed and/or last modified.

 

Unique settings per drive wouldn't be too important for me, but I've seen others ask for that. I have an idea... Maybe Defraggler could look for defraggler.ini in the root of each drive and, if found, use those settings? Otherwise, if a drive letter changed, or an external drive was moved to another computer, settings might be lost or incorrect. I still think having a seperate portable copy of Defraggler on each drive is easy enough, but everyone's situation is different.
