When I need line numbering I use Araneae http://www.ornj.net/software/araneae/ It isnt open-source, but it is free (as in beer) and its decent. I like Notepad because it is so dead simple. I dislike cluttered bloated editors. The more simple, the better. If you want an open-source editor, then take a look at SourceForge.net or Freshmeat, maybe you find something there.
