Corona
Can someone splain in laymens' terms just exactly what Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool actually does as opposed to MBAM or Avast? How friggin necessary is this POS? I notice it's one of the usual monthly updates that takes the longest to download & install.
Moderators DennisD Posted February 10, 2010 Moderators Share Posted February 10, 2010 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=890830 The Tool I believe is the ball boy behind the Microsoft goal posts. He tries to catch the ones that get through the rather large holes in the net.
Moderators hazelnut Posted February 10, 2010 Moderators Share Posted February 10, 2010 The MSRT is actually very successful. A lot of people don't use av/ malware software or have let it lapse, or forget to update it. However they do leave Windows updates on. This means that the worse kind of infections are cleared out of a users pc once a month. It's better than nothing, and in fact I think it's a good thing. A little bit of info here on detection rates and types of things it detects http://blogs.technet.com/mmpc/default.aspx?p=3 Support contact https://support.ccleaner.com/s/contact-form?language=en_US&form=general or support@ccleaner.com
marmite
Interesting comments and links about the MSRT. I guess the 'time taken' gripe is actually the tool running, rather than literally installing. Since it's targeting specific malware it's much quicker than a full AV scan but it's still going to take a while. It's another one of those things which, as hazelnut says, is worth the short hit. Moderators Andavari Posted February 10, 2010 Moderators Share Posted February 10, 2010 I guess the 'time taken' gripe is actually the tool running, rather than literally installing. That's the only thing I don't like about it is the time it takes, but I always update it and let it do its thing every month to find nothing.
