3 bugs/things to be wiped out from Defraggler

Recommended Posts

Hi,

There are (as the title promises) 3 things that I would rather not want to see in Defraggler.

(1.) The first one is: "1 files are in the block. Click to view the file list."

This means that, when you first Analyze your drive, you then move your cursor over a block and it says how many files there are on the selected block.

So it says "<amount> files are in the bl...". There should be separate info for blocks that have only 1 file: 1 file in the block. Click to view the file list. or <amount> file(s) (are) in the block. Click to view the file list..

(2.) The second thing is an actual bug. When you have defragged your driver completely, moved the files and stuff around nicely and even placed the files very smartly to maximize performance, what happens when you click *Defrag* again..? It does the same again!

Why an earth would the large files need to be moved from the perfect position to another place and then back?? It really makes no sense to me ?.?.

Defraggler should realize, when there is no point to start moving the file parts around..

(3.) The thiird one happens also when selecting a file, but after a defrag too. I mean the files that have no fragments show "1 Fragments" on their info. This is also an exception, that should also be separated from the others, because those files seriously have no fragments.

Therefore it should show 0 fragments, not 1 (the fragmentation starts from 0, not from 1!).

I was also wondering about the 1 fragment thing. Also, when I run PageDefrag, it shows 1 fragment for files that are not fragmented. Is it standard convention that 1 fragment is the same as 0 fragment?

There always will be 1 fragment but I've never seen 0 fragment.

Yeah, this needs to be fixed! Files that have 0 fragments do not have 1 fragment..

It should really say something like "Pieces", not fragments.

even with windows you can make the whole drive's files to one piece - so fix these things :)!

Yeah, but then the program would have to be called De-piece-ler. Anyway, in how many pieces is the file? None, it's whole.

Following years of computing convention one could talk of extents. In how many extents? One, two, etc. Makes sense. If we're deconstructing fragments, in the gramatical sense, then something that is whole cannot be a fragment, but once it is split into two it is composed of two fragments. So you would have no fragments, or two, three, etc. There would never be one fragment.

Or one could keep to even more years of convention and continue to call them fragments, just like all the other defraggers, and number them one, two, etc, or zero, two, three, etc. To number them in any other way would cause confusion and be untrue.

Wow, these are some particular bugs. I vote they just change it to "1 file(s) are in the block. Click to view the file list." This would be grammatically correct as the (s) would take precedence. This is how it is fairly commonly done. No need to trim strings and such for something like this...

You and your NTFS modules. I give up, you know the best :D.

I'll edit the first post to have these things.

0 fragments means the file doesn't exist.

1 fragment means that the file is in 1 piece.

2 or more fragments means that the file is in 2 or more pieces.

yeah, but it's confusing noobs because they always think there is one fragment.

Hm... Does it confuse early adopters? All of the defragging tools I have used (Including the Windows tool AFAIR - haven't used it since they destroyed it in Vista) count files in one piece as being in one fragment. If it isn't in two or more fragments then it is in one 'part' and as such is not fragmented. This has really become a pretty complex discussion because technically a fragment IS a part of a larger whole. Regardless though, the rest of the industry uses these conventions (One fragment means the file is in one piece), so I think that it makes sense to stick with this convention. It's been in place for a very long time and isn't going to change at this point. Whether it's technically incorrect or not is a side issue, as it is how it's always been conveyed, and the users should be used to that at this point. I don't think many people will be confused. It's not a great leap to come to the conclusion that a file in one fragment is not fragmented. If it were fragmented there would have to be more than one 'part'...

Contrary, I believe that changing it to 0 fragments would add confusion for users (And possibly fear), as they would see that as the file not existing. I can see it now: "What did Defraggler do to all of my files, they're all gone..."

Well I know pretty much about computers and it in fact was confusing me (until I realized what it means).

There's however is no explanation for that. There just reads "1 fragments" and then you have to understand what it means.

Sigh, why can't Microsoft change their annoying NTFS formats to ext3.. ^^?

ps. M_Lyons10, could you please clarify your post a little bit :) ? I mean that kinda message is pretty difficult to read. - E: Thanks ;)

NTFS is faster. ext3 defrags itself every time there'll be fragments => slower.

NTFS is faster. ext3 defrags itself every time there'll be fragments => slower.

doesnt it put the priority of the drive usage on user requests and program requests over defragging?

anyway, if it writes a file in a contiguous block then it is faster than if it writes it in fragments, so NTFS would be slower. (and if it is always defragging, then there is more contiguous space available and less 'holes')

on the word usage of "1 fragment"... it is more or less an accurate and easy to understand message, but when you aren't really looking close I find you can confuse it for 2 or more fragments, as it is in the same list with the fragmented files ( i think )...

anyway... it should say "no fragments" ... xxx.xxx file . . . . . no fragments (or: contiguous)

that easily differentiates it from "2 fragments" "1 fragment", etc...

changing "1 fragment" to "contiguous file" would definitely be a more elegant and respectable approach

just because everyone does something a certain way ( ie - 1 fragment ) ... doesn't mean YOU should

----

on re-de-fragging... absolutely:

I've been using jkdefrag, and it is very nice, but it has to redo everything up a notch or two if you add anything... it is not "smart" though it is "neat"...

smart would be:

options to control various settings of the WIN-defrag API, such as having a default position for files of various sizes, such as mashing all the large files (>100mb) to the back of the drive, having a mid-section for wav's, mp3's, etc (files 100>x>50, 50>y>25, 25>z>10, etc.), keeping system files at the front of the drive, and so on.

expecially that you should be able to control all options of the defrag setup!

and I want all my system files in the front of the drive optimized by a combined algorythm of size (smallest) and usage (most recently accessed)

at any rate,

Is this open source?

hmm...

----

a last note on the first note:

it need only say (when hovering):

1 file (or name of the one to three files)

you can click if you want to, it doesn't have to tell you, that's what help files are for, to tell you how to use the program so you don't feel stupid every time you see the message:

click to view the file list :P

Pardon my attitude but i for one am enormously happy with this free (but obviously costly in time and effort) tool that beats all others i've ever seen hands down!

Some people are just ridiculously S P oiled! Thank-you Pifiform for all three of your highly useful programs. CCLEANER was the first tool i ever used on the Windows system registry

that really worked AND DIDN'T cause problems. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you. JL

I thought only ext4 defrags itself. I also thought that ext3 does NOT fragmantate o.O.

I am thinking that a defragmenter should be something open source and free as in freedom and beer.

It should be for the good of the community and empower individuals to take control of their own hard drives (and other drives), completely...

I'm new to defraggler, but I like what I see so far.

I'm also interested in making my own or collaborating on one with others.

So, yes, defraggler should have these features fixed/added, and yes it is nice and good, and yes we ARE happy...

we are also happy to offer improvement suggestions, etc.

enjoy
