Godwnona Posted September 15, 2008 Share Posted September 15, 2008 Please help me When I download the latest updates and then run the cleaner it brings up approximatley 6,000 registry issues to fix, and if i then proceed to removing the errors my system freezes up once they are removed. Moderators Augeas Posted September 15, 2008 Moderators Share Posted September 15, 2008 Well, I would stop doing any mass registry cleans (personally I hardly ever remove stuff from the reg, but I certainly don't have 6000 issues). If you can identify known issues, such as all that AOL stuff and you've swept AOL out of your pc, then get rid of those. I know it's more painstaking that way but it seems that doing a mass clean is removing something that your pc needs. That is probably quite difficult to find. Hi Godwnona, Thanks for the report. Of course some peoples PC are going to respond differently to updates than others. In your case there is apparently a big change as regards Registry issues. Remember, we are users just like you and contribute our time and knowledge to help others. This work also helps to improve the program itself. CCleaner is very important in helping everyday users get the most benefits from their computers for "free". Not "free" just in cost but also keeps the new technologies affordable and usable by greater numbers of "free" thinking individuals like you and me. This is a great step forward in the freedom of all peoples. Please help us out by providing a list or snippets or some "snapshots" of what is being reported when you use the Registry Issues function. Thanks and best wishes, davey P.S. As advised by the other members, I would use the latest version but I would not do any deleting of Registry Issues. YoKenny Posted September 16, 2008 Share Posted September 16, 2008 I find that when I try applications that I install then I un-install them with Add/Remove Programs there are many entries reported in the registry clean function and the very first time I ran CCleaner I was amazed at how many reported entries there were. Over time the developers of CCleaner have discovered more places where entries are left over and have included them for removal. I find that CCleaner is very conservative on what entries it finds to remove because when I use RegSeeker Histories Old Start Menu Items there are more entries to remove from the registry then I run Clean the Registry it finds even more entries to remove. Then I run NTREGOPT to compact the registry then reboot. I do this on all 3 of my XP systems once in a while to tune up the registry without problems on any of them. I find that MOST users don't do that much software changing to get any benefits from so called "Registry tuning". Most of these commercial so called "Registry Tuners" or "Registry Cleaners" or "Registry Boosters" are a bunch of crap marketed just like old fashioned "snake oil"." Hey Your Registry looks terrible. This will fix it, clean it , tune it up etc etc." Well friends MOST users have some extra "stuff" in the Registry. Most people have a little mud and "stuff" on the bottom of their cars also. Will the car perform better without this little bit of mud ? Of course it will. It will be totally unnoticeable to anyone because the change is so minimal. Now the guy that get tons of mud needs some cleaning. MOST PC users do not need to touch the Registry at all. Messing with the Registry can cause many unwanted problems, data loss, time loss, and money loss. davey Just some "brotherly" advice to MOST PC users. As stated before none of these appear before I have performed the updates. I'm hoping you can enlighten me as to why this is now happening. I help by collecting information that will help the " BUG fixers" determine if and where some fixes need to be made. There are some more answers needed also. You can put your reply right along side or under each question. Did you actually use the prior versions since you have used the new versions ? The Prior version does not produce these results NOW, TODAY ? Do you get issues for each option or only the Ones you have provided so far ? If other options have issues list some snippets please at the bottom of your reply. What OS version and edition and 32-bit or 64-bit do you use? How long have you been using CCleaner? What was the prior version of CCleaner that you used? We will let you know what the "bug fixers" report after they see your other answers. These issues look as if they have been there, and accumulating, for some time. Most of the file extensions, f'rinstance, seem a little arcane with only a few I recognise and would say are important. I only ask to find out if it's detecting a valid installed program. That amount of found registry issues would absolutely horrify me so it's a good thing you're asking about them! Luckily Andavari has a vast amount of experience with Windows current and prior versions. He does an Unusual amount of "software testing" and needs his experience to keep his Registry "cleaned". He has much more need to do so than the average user. CCleaner is now completely written in C++ When you downloaded the newest version some new C++ programs may have also been downloaded and need to be loaded. Just in case this did not happen I would use these MS updates to be sure that you have the latest C++ software. Alan_B Posted October 3, 2008 Share Posted October 3, 2008 Hi I think I recognise "Unused File Extension .aca - Agent.Character.2 HKCR\.aca" and all the others. To be exact, I think I recognise "Unused File Extension". If Windows encounters a file with the extension ".XYZ" it does not wait for you to double click, instead it seems to look up its file associations to see what it should do if you ever did give it a click, and then it seems to add another item to the registry things of "Windows does not know what to do with this ....", and CCleaner then wants to purge a new entry of "Unused File Extension .XYZ". It looks to me as if you have many files with extensions such as .aca, and that they have no file association, so if Windows THINKS you might want to double click that file, its another "Windows does not know what to do with this ...." I believe it is not the existence of a File.XYZ that causes "Unused File Extension .XYZ", BUT that Windows thinks you MAY wish to double click and so it takes pre-emptive action. I have not scrutinised the exact cause and effect, but it seems that if the file is displayed by xplorer2, and Windows thinks I may be about to hover over it, those are grounds for it to add to "Windows does not know what to do with this ....". Simple explanation - if Windows thinks you are "looking at it funny" that's another "Windows does not know what to do with this ....". Perhaps a different Antivirus product is installed and its new file scanning is detected as "looking at it funny". Perhaps the latest CCleaner is scanning a bit different and this is detected as "looking at it funny". Perhaps the latest Microsoft Patch Tuesday update has altered the definition of "looking at it funny".
