after running CCleaner-Windows is currently in the middle of a long operation

Often after running CCleaner,....when I attempt to shut down or restart two of the computers with XP SP3 , I get the message "Windows is currently in the middle of a long operation. Either wait for it to finish or cancel it before you quit Windows".

 

I see nothing running in the task manager .

 

 

 

My current work-around

is to switch to a different User Name

and select restart or shutdown from that User Name

That's a new one for me.

 

I don't know if Microsoft's free User Profile Hive Cleanup Service will remedy the problem or not, however for anyone using Windows XP I always recommend it to remove a common problem ("bug") in XP.

Indexing was active on 2 of my computers, creating the issue for me

I've been having this "...currently in the middle of a long operation..." problem for quite some time, across a few versions of CCleaner on my XP/Pro, SP2 and SP3 system (32bit). I've disabled Indexing, by double-click on My Computers, right-click on C: drive and selecting Properties, and unchecking "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching". Furthermore, my "Indexing Service" in Start->Administrative Tools->Services is set to Manual and is not in the Started state. I only have a C: hard-drive, floppy, DVD-RW drive.

 

This long operation problem occurs frequently enough, but is nonetheless sufficiently sporadic to not necessarily be able to make it happen in a reliable manner. When this happens, I invariably have two "rundll32.exe" processes in my Task Manager. Running "Process Explorer" v11.21 (from sysinternals.com/microsoft.com), right-clicking on the process and selecting Properties, and then going to the Image tab shows the "Command Line" as ""C:\WINDOWS\system32\RunDll32.exe" InetCpl.cpl, ClearMyTracksByProcess 1" for one rundll32.exe and the same but with a 32 at the end for the other rundll32.exe. The Path is "C:\WINDOWS\system32\RunDll32.exe" and my Current Directory is "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\"

 

The "Threads" tab shows three rows with a TID 792 and Start Address RunDll32.exe+0x1bdc; TID 1596 and ADVAPI32.dll!WmiFreeBuffer+0xa7; 1159 and SHLWAPI.dll!0rdina505+0x37a (and this last entry has a CSwitch Delta of 80). I've no idea what these mean.

 

I'm running CCleaner v2.11.636 on XP/SP3 by right-clicking on my Recycle Bin, and selecting Run CCleaner. If I "Open CCleaner..." In the Options button Settings, I have English selected, Add Run CCleaner, Add Open CCleaner, and Automatically check, are checked and Normal file deletion is selected. Cookies, Include and Exclude are empty and Advanced only has "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours" checked. In the Registry button, everything is checked except Installer. In the Cleaner button, I have everything checked under Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer. Everything except Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts is checked under System. And Advanced has everything checked except Windows Size, Hotfix Uninstallers, and Custom Files & Folders. Under Cleaner->Applications tab, Firefox/Mozilla has everythnig checked except Saved Form Information. Most things under Application, Internet Multimedia and Utilities is checked. Under Windows, I have MS Management Console checked.

 

I never actually use IE, I always use Firefox (3.0.1). So I've no idea what the InetCPL.cpl is working so hard on. As far as I know, the "1" option is Delete History, and "32" is Delete Password. I'd be fine with it doing a Delete All (255, I'm told from random google lookups.)

 

I realize the above is a lot of info, much of it probably not directly relevant but I wanted to cover my bases. My current method of successfully shutting down anyway is to simply End Process via Task Manager, after which I can Shutdown just fine. While this problem is hardly debilitating, and I admit I've gotten used to it by now, I wanted to at least drop this info into this thread on the off chance others are still having this problem, despite disabling Indexing Service and other things referenced in this (and other) threads. I don't have Nero 7. I don't have Windows Desktop Search thing installed (still an optional choice that shows up on my Microsoft Update, but I don't want it, so I don't install that.) I've not yet used the User Hive/Profile Cleanup thing.

 

I realize that rundll32/inetcpl problems aren't really a CCleaner problem/fault. But if anyone knows reliable ways past this issue and still retain all of CCleaner's advantages, I'd love to hear them.

Hi Paul,

Maybe I can get some responders that use Firefox 3.

It seems that there have been a number of strange things happening between CCleaner and Firefox 3.

From your descriptions it sounds like Firefox may still be in the process of closing.

I don't use Firefox but many other users remind us that sometimes people think it has closed down and it really hasn't. This could definitely cause conflicts between CCleaner, FF3 and the whole shutdown process.

I am sure we will hear from other FF3 users.

 

BTW, I want to thank you for being so thorough in your report and your own efforts in trying to resolve this problem. I think you have a combination of causes and eliminating them is going to benefit your daily work in the process.

P.S. Since you called it a thingy, I will provide the link. UPHClean should be installed by ALL WinXP users . This will clear up a lot of slow shut down problems.

You probably needed it long before now. If you use ERUNT or NTREGOPT you will notice the change in how long it takes to copy your user hive decreases.

 

I read your post so you get to read this blog. I am sure Sysinternals had a lot to do with it.

You may have already read this thread but I want you to pay special attention to this post and what is said about Nero and other possible "indexers" not just Windows old search but the new one 4.0 and other products as well. Turning off one of these "indexers" may solve your intermittent problem also.

The "indexers" are necessary for using the product but once they are finished then they should be turned off.

If it persists I want you to recall what Products or Programs that you used that day or recently and write them down. This way you can track down a relationship to the symptom.

I recommend that you turn off any such things in FF3 or IE7Pro for IE. I also recommend setting all Advanced settings in Internet Explore to "Restore Defaults". Leave the cleaning job to CCleaner or use the other but don't try to use both or problems will occur. I guarantee it. Me I trust only CCleaner.

If you try a combination you find that things you thought were being erased are not.
