I don't see that feature at all in AVG 8. In fact it's worse than it was in 7.5. Now you pick an hour can't pick the minute. Than it randomly picks a time between the hour you picked and and two hours from it. So some where in the two hour time frame it sets a time . You cannot pick that time it's picked for you. Also it changes that time every day on you. Check when the next scheduled update is for. Not on the schedule but on the update module main screen. It will tell you when the next scheduled update will happen. Once that up date happens it changes the time for the next update. It will not be the same time the next day. It changes every day. Very very stupid move. At least in 7.5 what ever time was randomly selected for you stayed the same every day.
I just double checked and you're right - the feature isn't there at all. When I first downloaded AVG 8.0 I thought it was giving me a chance to pick the time for it to update - I've just realised that it was just to set the "from" time for the update and AVG then sets the "to" time 2 hours in advance and that is the update "window". So that's one less thing I like about this then! On AVG 7.5 I used to keep tweaking the update manager (by turning off then on automatic updates) until I got the "random" time of 9.00am.

Yeah we know that. I posted that last week. It will be mistake if they follow through with that IMO.
that date is much later than the one I saw elsewhere and then posted here - it was May 31, now it is (according to the above post) December 31. At least that's 7 months away, not 3 weeks!

Anyone here good enough at Photoshop skills to create an hysterical mock-up of HijackThis all pimped out like the bloatware that's so prevalent today?

Only if it has a few toolbars included with it though, can't forget those. ;)

Yes I misread Augeas's post and thought it said May 31 which is the date I had posted a few days ago when I received a pop up saying that. Dec 31, 2008 is the new date which is good news. Should give them plenty of time to "fix" AVG 8.

Well I want say I'm in love with the new AVG 8, but I been able to tweak out a few of the things I didn't like so far so good on that, none of the update have reverted it back. As for the update time on program & virus database I set them intentionally to run while I'm on the PC the first week I used it. My info pop up boxes have been right on the money all week long, and the scheduled scan time has also started right on time each day also. I just checked prior to this post and all my set times for updates and scan are still as I set them.

The automatic updates are done silently in the background so you shouldn't be seeing any pop up windows about them. They only appear on the manual updates.

As for your updates times staying the same thats a first. They change every day to a random time that is in the two hour time slot. This has been discussed at the AVG forum and that is how it is designed to work in the free version. Let's say is say your next scheduled update is today at 2:05. After that update takes place you will not see the next scheduled update set for tomorrow at the same time. it will be a different time between 2:00 and 4:00 tomorrow and randomly selected. There is no longer a set time for you.

Look under the history menu item and select "event history". It will list the times that updates started and finished. I seriously doubt you will have two the same.

Having just read through this thread and found a mountain of negative remarks, I just need to add another view to the debate.

After being contacted by AVG and invited to use version 8.0, I eventually installed it.

Sure, it seeemed a bit strange at first, after being used to 7.5, but all I can say to the many sceptics is, just give yourself time and AVG a break.

IMHO it is great. :D

It updates at the appointed time, scans on schedule and has been very thorough in its' findings.

It has my vote anyway. B)

It does that using 35x the ram it used to. It went from less than 2 MB to 60-70 on the machine I have it installed on. I stayed with 7.5 on my other machines.

Anyone considering AVG "FREE" 8.0 should be aware that you will have no "email" protection after 30 day's unless you purchase the product!

Absolutely false. Every feature that is available in the free version of AVG 8 on install is fully functional for the life of the program including the e mail scanner. There is not trial time limit.

Sorry :( , I stand corrected.

Or did "Grisoft" just do another back flip?

Remember the deadline for AVG 7.5 Updates was supposed to be May 31, and now it's December 31.

I hope every feature that is available in "AVG 8.0 free" stays fully functional for the life of the program for the sake of everyone that decides to install it.

I hope they redo the whole thing. It's a resource hog as it is and I don't like it as much as 7.5.

Look at this list here by rridgely for good freebies.

Its missing hpHosts and a HOSTS file manager like HostsMan:

Thanks for all helps. i just looking for one good ati-spy software for my PC

Hello jiangyanjia,

The old saying "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is still true.

Prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software!

Download the latest SpywareBlaster version and you'll be secured by the most powerful anti-spyware protection solution anywhere!

It is not a program that uses up your CPU.It is a program that loads data to help prevent spyware from ever getting to your PC.

It prevents you from getting to dangerous websites and blocks adware "cookies" from your PC.

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html

This and other spyware programs are on rridgely list.

AVG 7.5 is still available from here. http://filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/4029/ AVG Free Edition 7.5.524 Many users love this product.I do.

This is the simplest way to have passive spyware protection and active anti-virus protection.Use both programs.

Good luck,

:) davey
