Windows XP Service Pack 3 Released to Manufacturing

Recommended Posts

Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.

We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.

Thanks to everyone here who installed the public betas ? you not only gave us detailed feedback but also helped each other out with timely troubleshooting. Through the beta program we found several important issues and were able to confirm some essential fixes. We couldn?t have done this without you.

We will still be monitoring this forum during the next few weeks in case you have more feedback about the release of Windows XP SP3.

On behalf of myself, Shashank Bansal and Windows Serviceability, many thanks.

Chris Keroack

Did you reinstall your computer before installing SP3, Hazelnut?

Just for reference Icedrake this is the way I did it. (Remember this way worked for me, I am not saying this is the way)

Already had SP2.

Put screensaver to hundreds of minutes (hate it coming on when I'm downloading)

Went here to download and chose a mirror

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4323.html

Chose save to desktop.

It took an hour without any problems, it's busy of course just now.

When it was finished downloading I went offline and turned off my virus software by right-clicking taskbar icon, and choosing exit or shutdown, and confirming it and closing any other things running that I didn't need (Don't worry your anti virus should just startup again when you reboot at the end of this)

I left my firewall on (not the windows one) as it has a learning mode and by leaving it on it reduced the popups that I got when I rebooted.

Then I double clicked on the desktop download icon.

It took quite a while to install and once or twice there seemed to be no hard drive activity for a moment or two but then it would chug away again.

When I was finished it asked if I would like to reboot now or later, I said now.

It took just a little while longer than normal to reboot which I think is understandable. There were a couple of little black cmd windows flash up briefly and then it asked if I wanted windows updates on automatic (may not ask if you already have this selected)

And that was that, I rebooted a couple more times just to check desktop loading time and all was okay.

Cannot really notice any difference really :)

I use System Information for Windows (SIW) Kenny and it states I have SP3 build 2600 and then the numbers 080413-2111 which is the Final of SP3

MD5: BB25707C919DD835A9D9706B5725AF58

There are a lot of stories flying about at the moment about it's not really a final and so on.

I'm quite confident that I have the final version.
