Should I disable System Restore or not?

Icedrake

I have never used SR and it's been always disabled on my system. If you are good with computers/Windows, disable it. If you are not, i think you should leave it on. I mean (most) problems can be fixed without using SR.

Not sure about the performance thing, but i guess that disabling it frees up some system recources. Also frees up some disk space. I have also read, that SR is not so good, cause it can store viruses as well.

I've heard that disabling System Restore on Windows XP, really increases system performance. So should I disable it?

No, System Restore may be the only chance you have to recover from a problem before taking more drastic steps like a "System Recovery" or a complete System reinstall.

The only thing you might gain is the use of 1 GB of disk space.

Make sure you have you basic maintenance procedures taken care of first.

See this link. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?s=&amp...ost&p=96510

Then do some reading on the following website to dispel some of those "Myths" everybody has heard.

You apply all his info and your system will be in great shape and so will your knowledge level.

Myth (Definition) - "A fiction or half-truth, especially one that forms part of an ideology." There are numerous Myths floating around the Internet regarding Windows XP, especially relating to Optimizations and Security. Hopefully this site will debunk some of these.

I can fix most of the computer problems I have, however System Restore is a big aid in fixing stuff that isn't easy. It should however be used in conjunction with ERUNT because sometimes all that's needed is to restore an ERUNT registry backup to be up and running - use System Restore for more serious problems.

So I'd say leave it on as it may save you one day, and just saving you once makes it worth having on, versus reinstalling everything.

It took 10 gig of space on my hdd. WHAT A WASTE haha

That's because you were very likely unaware of the fact that you can limit the amount of disk space SR occupies:

Control Panel > System > System Restore > Settings

I second/third Davey and Andavari: leave it enabled.

I have System Restore "disabled" because on more than 1 occasion it has failed me!...could not roll back to a "Windows" created system restore point...whatever!

The only time I use it, is If I choose to make a "manual" restore point for some reason.

I'm no expert! and this is only my opinion.

There are a variety of reasons why System Restore points could become corrupted or other issues that might cause a restore to fail.

Hi Tony ;) , thanks for the links.

I've covered all those basses before, with regards to "Issues" why "System Restore" is not able to roll back to a "Windows" generated restore "Check" point.

I have gone step by step trying to make sure every thing is set right  , however as I said' I'm no expert  and I might be over looking or missing something.

This is not the only machine that I've had problems with regarding "System Restore".

My old "Windows ME" machine was never able to roll back to a "Windows" generated restore point.

On the positive side, I've had no problems rolling back to a manually created "Restore Point".
