Shannon
Is it ok to put a lot of icons on your Desktop? I'm a newbie, just learning Thank you, Shannon
agumon
yes... but will slow down performance (i believe so...)... just put the necessary icons that you need to access quickly on the desktop... if you are using Windows XP, you can pin application shortcuts to the start menu... you can also add shortcuts to quick-launch... --==aGumon==--

agumon
anyway, each shortcut created (it apply to any file also...) takes up at least 4.00 KB (4,096 bytes) of hard disk space no matter how big the file size is... well.. maybe is not a lot that much... so... 1 file = 4kb... then 10 files will be 4x10 = 40kb... then 100 files will be 4x100 = 400kb... then 1000 files will be 4x1000 = 4000kb... --==aGumon==--
DjLizard
Impressive display of knowledge, agumon. Yes, that is a 'cluster size' thing. NTFS 5 supports small clusters all the way down to 512 bytes! A drive formatted for 512 byte clusters is a lot more efficient (imagine the wasted hard drive space you've got right now!) Yep, 1,024 1-byte files (a text file with a single letter in it) takes up a whopping 4 megabytes. Eldmannen
It will clutter up your desktop and make it more difficult to get a fast overview at, will make startup times higher, and will all-in-all be a bad thing. You can run "the desktop cleanup wizard" it also runs by itself once in a while and you can choose to remove rarerly used desktop icons. Best thing is to keep as few icons as possible on the desktop and only things which you need quick access to and use alot. Example a internet browser and a media player.
