ERS Posted January 1, 2008 Share Posted January 1, 2008 Downloaded CCleaner and used the registry cleaner. When prompted to backup, I did so, renaming the file to something I could easily remember. Saved and proceeded with cleaner. However, afterwards when I checked for the backup, I right clicked on the file and "merge" is not an option. The file that I saved is not listed as a "registry entry", but is just listed as a "file" under file type. What happened ? I have not encountered any problems and have rebooted to no problems also. I have even double checked and went back through another registry cleaner and when prompted to back up, to verify that the file type being saved is a "reg" file, and it is. If so, does it stll have this ending after you rename it? If you just add .reg to the backup does it work then? If you rename before fixing the issues, the backup is saved as Type: File. If you don't rename before fixing the issues, the backup is saved as Type: Registration Entries. Just add the .reg extension if you rename before saving. If your backup is saved as Type: file, simply rename and add the .reg extension. I hope this helps! I just went through the process again and once saved as a .reg file type, when prompted to "fix issues" I get "unused file extension" and the solution is to "delete the registry value". I have since renamed my original adding the .reg extension and now have the option to merge. Keep in mind I am having no problems and am not trying to merge my old registry. I just like to be safe and look at things once saved to make sure everything looks ok. But that "unused file extension" and the solution is to "delete the registry value" has me puzzled. Hello hazelnut, thank you for your kind words. I joined this forum to find a solution for this issue. My original post was on 11/26/07 stating that my backup was saved as type: file. It has been said that the backup not showing as a .reg file can be a file association problem. This is not true in my case. But can it be possible that we are both correct on a case to case basis? Saving the registry backup as <filename>.reg will save it as a registry backup. I'll report it to man himself... I'm running windows xp and followed the instructions listed in this thread, but it didn't work. When the backup file was saved I didn't rename it, but went I looked up the file it did show it as a registry type file. When I right clicked on it and clicked merge I got the standard little windows message asking which of the programs I want to use to open it and it lists a bunch of different programs. I next renamed the file and added the ".reg", but it did the same thing so I'm still unable to restore my registry.
