Internet Explorer crippled by Microsoft patch

Microsoft is investigating reports that last week's Internet Explorer security update has crippled some users' web connection.

 

Microsoft said it was on the case. "Our customer service and support teams are investigating public claims of a deployment issue with Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-069," said Microsoft's director of security response Mark Mille. "If necessary, Microsoft will update the Knowledge Base article associated with MS07-069 with detailed guidance on how to prevent or address these deployment issues," Miller added.

 

Other users on the support forums weren't much help, except to suggest uninstalling last Tuesday's security update. That's what Decker did. "We uninstalled [MS07-069] and have had no problems since then," he said.

Maybe this will make some people jump to Firefox in the mean time and they will like it and stay with it. The sooner we can flush Internet Craplorer the better.

I don't have this problem with IE7

 

This Hotfix indicates that it is for IE6 but this fix also applies to IE7

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\

3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.

4. Type FEATURE_PROTECT_DECOMPRESSION_FILTER_FROM_ABORT_KB942367, and then press ENTER.

5. Right-click FEATURE_PROTECT_DECOMPRESSION_FILTER_FROM_ABORT_KB942367, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

6. Type an asterisk symbol (*), and then press ENTER.

 

Note The asterisk symbol (*) represents any process name that uses Urlmon.dll. If you want to make this change for an individual application that uses Urlmon.dll, you can use the name of that application instead of the asterisk symbol (*). For example, you can use Appname.exe.

7. Right-click the asterisk symbol (*), and then click Modify.

8. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

9. Exit Registry Editor.

Personally IE7 with protected mode in Vista is great. However, Firefox offers two things that make me use it more: 1) Can turn off the Harddisk cache 2) Many more extensions.

Pfipps what do you see as being important to turn off caching in IE7 under Vista? In FF its still in memory and you still have to download it.

 

The lack of default protected mode for FF is a killer IMHO. I guess more informed users will use something like sandboxie but the majority of casual users wont.
