jepp_justin
Hello all, Need help w/ my Windows explorer.. Everytime I open "My Computer" and double click on C drive, D drive or "My Documents", another window pops, asking what program I want to use to open it.. When I try to open "other's documents" it is running fine.. I am not able to view the contents of C and D drive by double clicking, I have to right click on it and tick "Explore", to view the files.. Anyone knows how to resolve this? Thanks.. justin jepp
Humpty
When you right click C or D drive what is the the first option in the right click context menu. If it's Autoplay instead of Open then it is probably related to malware which will require posting a hijackthis log.
wholdman
Hi, I too recommend you to scan for various malware. However, a solution that might work for you is to run these 2 DOS commands: C:\>attrib -S -H -R C:\autorun.inf C:\>del /F C:\autorun.inf then repeat the procedure with: D:\>attrib -S -H -R C:\autorun.inf D:\>del /F C:\autorun.inf
Moderators Andavari Posted September 22, 2007 Moderators Share Posted September 22, 2007 That can also happen if you've been playing around in the Windows FileTypes or trying to assign some program to a drive, etc. It's very easy to mess up the registry and Explorer won't open your hard drive. There's this Google search for: can't open hard drive in explorer These are for Windows XP only (I don't know if these will fix the problem or not. It's wise to create a System Restore point before using them!)" Download xp_folder_open Download # 215 on the far right called "Set Folder Default to Open & Use Same Window - Explore"Note: There's two .reg files to download one is linked in "Set Folder Default to Open & Use Same Window" and another is linked in "Explore" Download # 380 on the left called "Restore Directory and Folder Shell - HKCR"Note: There's two .reg files to download one is linked in "Directory" and another is linked in "Folder"

jepp_justin
Hi Andavari, I also did as you instructed, but it didnt work.. I recently removed my clamwin av and installed avg, do you think this has relevance? I am also using portable hard disks sometimes for file transfer, thru USB.. jepp
Moderators Andavari Posted September 22, 2007 Moderators Share Posted September 22, 2007 ClamWin does install right click scanning into the shell however I doubt that it would cause that problem. That's of course based on assumption from when I've previously used it myself, and it hasn't broken anything when uninstalled.
