Today, however, I ran two other scan trials that make me wonder if I should plunk down $30 or so for a different choice. CCleaner found 3 problems to fix. I wouldn't worry about it, CCleaner finds less because it is a safe reg cleaner. Unless you know exactly what you're doing with the registry you should avoid more aggressive cleaners like the plague as they'll do far more damage than they fix. Even if you did know what you were doing there are plenty of free aggressive reg cleaners out there, no need to pay. The only reg cleaner that I consider worthy of paying for is Reg Mechanic which manages to get the right balance between safe and aggressive, but the same still applies with regards to not knowing what you're doing Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Unfortunately bad programming leaves stuff behind on install which IMHO CCleaner does a satisfactory job of addressing. In many ways the "importance" of registry cleaning is completely misleading to the otherwise non technical user. It wont magically fix many problems and it wont make your PC 200% faster. inspector49 Posted October 10, 2007 Share Posted October 10, 2007 Just wanted to add my 2-cents worth to this post by first of all stating that the moderator or whoever replied to this post is Right On! As a programmer and an AcroForms developer (to let you know I'm not computer illiterate), what many don't understand and are least aware of are the scams, tricks and marketing ploys to sell just about anything on the web, software included. Many, if not most, of these so called ads for Registry cleaners and other file utilities are being provided by Affiliates who are also selling the product and could probably really care less if it does what it claims. As such, it's easy for the average PC user or consumer to be totally unaware of this. Once more, it makes it extremely difficult for those looking for honest reviews regarding like products. I can also tell you that if you are willing to take some to research some of the ads and reviews for these products , there's little consistency in rating the products as some are highly rated on one site and at the lower end of the scale on others. What does that tell you? Given that CCleaner is Free, this is the first thing in their favor. Secondly, I just ran into a problem on my own PC having to do with Look-in drop menus opening slow to begin with. Believe me in that I tried just about everything from running Spyware, Anti-Virus ware, defragging, you name it, and all failed. I should also add that the products I used are not Freebies for the most part, Webroot's Anti-Spyware package being one of them. Just for the heck of it, I tried a number of Free Scan sites you referred to, and yes, I lost count of the number of maladies they came up with as compared to CCleaner. And then of course, I have to buy the product to get all of this alleged garbage removed from my PC, give me a break! Funny though, the little consistency as to what each one found. Up to this point, I had forgotten all about CCleaner. Apparently I had come across it some time ago, since I found it stored in a folder on my PC, and decided to give it a try after all else had failed. And guess what, my problem has since vanished. Incidentally, and for what it's worth, I'm not an MS advocate but I am a big advocate of Open Source software and Freeware. My experience has been (over the years) that the majority of the time, the open source software, freeware, and shareware is usually much better. In fact, anyone who has used a product like Open Office for any length of time will tell you the same thing. Rather, those who are trying to do us a good turn in offering Good software that works for Free, aren't spending their time (much less monies they don't have) marketing it! Unfortunately, one has to weed through and pretty much disregard all the hype and hoopla just to find a good product these days. For what it's worth, CCleaner happens to be one of them ! Cleaning, compacting, and defragging a registry will shave off seconds on boot time; and I think that the defragging and compacting does more than anything else. Is it snake oil? Compared to PC Tools Registry Mechanic ($49.95) to CCleaner (Free!) the only difference in what they find (problems in the registry) is; NOTHING!
