  1. Thanks for the prompt replies. Looks to me like a good list of security software, but I am a little reluctant to post a link like this in the software forum, as I have not checked everything out personally. Sooo, here it is in the lounge. Hope something here helps.
  2. Ran across this site, has many security applications, some free some not. Is it reputable? http://www.dyingsun.net/apps.htm
  3. Also had problems using IE7, required to re log in at each screen change, but could not do so. Also, kept changing skins at each screen change. Deleted cookies, history, tempor~1, everything, restarted, no help. But, seems OK now, if this posts I guess it is going to work.
  4. The guide is great. If you write a gazillion words, you'll never be able to answer all the questions there may be, but bless you for trying. Stay on the couch amigo. Chicken soup and orange juice. Get well.
  5. Forgive me if I am telling you something you already know. On this computer (Compaq, running WXP up to date), I never see the windows logo on the way to safe mode. I just tried it. Starting from off (not restart), I press and hold the f8 key immediately after turning the power on. I briefly see the Compaq logo, then a black screen with a lot of choices listed. If I use the arrow keys to move up to safe mode, then hit enter, then: 1. a bunch of scrolling takes place, this takes a while, 2. I am asked to log in as an account holder (owner), and 3. then. . .this is where it gets interesting. . .a dialog box asks if I want safe mode or system restore. Try that, I bet if you can get as far as the system restore choice box you can get up and going. There is a file attached. It has the relevant help files from this computer. Good luck. Let me know if it works.
  6. Nifty rig, xbrianx. That 3 gig P4 processor should really cook.
  7. Just installed and ran v1.01.032 Beta. Worked fine, fast. Worked on both C: drive and WD external usb hard drive. Running Zone firewall, CA antivirus, wxp up to date. Bunch of other security stuff. Nothing interfered. Great program. Thanks to all. Be safe.
  8. well, a bunch, probably about 30. And you're right, too much stuff, gonna get rid of most of it, am due to reinstall everything here in a month or so. However, I must admit to "staging" that picture for effect. . ."Spyware As Art". . .?? Have learned a lot about what to trust in freeware on this forum. Best forum I have seen. Wish I could contribute more , will as I can. Seriously going to wait as long as possible before going to Vista. Bill Gates fields these darned operating systems, the users tune them up for him, their time and maybe money. I don't begrudge him profits, but I will wait.
  9. Welcome to the forum. The guys on here know a whopping lot about computers, and will not steer you wrong. CCleaner is a great program, and quite safe but powerful. For my part, may I suggest that you do not tinker with the registry until you are very sure of yourself. The option that does that is the little blue cube at the top left of the splash screen. Looks like a monochromatic Rubik's cube exploding.
  10. Well, it's nice to stay busy in the wintertime. . .gonna think long and hard before going to vista. . .
  11. Well, thanks again TeeJay. It is a little intimidating, but here goes. If I am never back on the forum, you will know that I am trapped behind a Free Finnish Firewall. This site (mentioned elsewhere in the forum) rates firewalls using so called independent leak tests. They have a nifty chart. Go see: http://www.matousec.com/projects/windows-p...sts-results.php Jetico looked pretty good. I wonder if these results are valid?
  12. Thanks, slowday444, I'll use the link >av-comparatives.org<, another item of information to consider.
  13. Yes , easy now, not then, don't remember the year that was, but the removers weren't available; I regedited, safemoded, batch filed, and everything I could think of. Then reinstalled. :-( Interesting thing happened last year. I was travelling, motel advertised free high speed 'net, so OK. Immediately when I signed onto the wireless net, Norton caught a virus. Before even access to email or anything else. No harm done, but maybe safe at home does not equal safe on the road. Yes, Norton, well it was free. . .
  14. One of the CoolWebSearch variants, long time ago. No Idea how it got in, but it got past CA Antivirus and FW. Was before any of the modern removal tools existed, or I didn't know about them. Big battle. Lost. Had to reinstall the OS.

    Freeware!

You betcha: Dangerous to leave any essential info out of a post. I have never found a bad application here, and can only imagine how much effort that requires. Thanks a million.

    Freeware!

from BrownSugar: Microsoft has pushed back the date for WXP service pack 3 at once or twice. Right now they are saying that "SP3 for Windows XP Professional (and Home) is currently planned for 1H CY2008. This date is preliminary." Found at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/servicepacks.mspx It is frustrating, but I am going to wait for SP3, if there is no action by the middle of 2008 I'll download all that stuff. Takes a long time.
  17. FYI, right now, using ctrl+alt+delete: CA internet Security Suite total usage seems to be about 6.5 mb. Using old subscription: Zone firewall plus CA Antivirus plus PestPatrol Pest Patrol seems to be the hog, using about 2 mb. Seems like a lot of mem usage?? Gonna let the old CA go when the subscription runs out, been with'em since they gave it away free in the ? late eighties. Thanks to all the information on this forum I feel comfortable going to freebies for firewall and AV both. Really helpful information. Thanks to Rridgely and all involved. From Rridgely: Another trick which I think is deliberate is that they put just enough ram in to make the computer run, knowing that you will need to buy more. . .seems underhanded. . .
  18. Great animations, JDPower. I like those, wonder how much programming time goes into one?
  19. go see: http://www.xs4all.nl/~jvdkuyp/flash/see.htm
  20. Thanks, TeeJay, for the info. I think I will try it on another computer. Haven't done so yet because not enough time to fiddle with the configuration.
  21. They are very concerned about their image. . . Don't remember where it came from, in some email, I think.
  22. Well, fooey. Glad you posted that. I resubscribed to CA in late 2006, didn't know they had reorganized. Now must get back on the hunt for a good FW and AV. This forum is very helpful for that. Very knowledgable participants, would be a good idea to follow their advice.
  23. Much more restrained these days. Go see: http://www.utdallas.edu/~pervin/eyes.html
