  1. You can continue using the original version you bought in 2015 for as long as you like, so you might consider that to be a lifetime license but Piriform don't refer to it as such. They call it a version license. I've found I can use all versions up to 5.58.7209 on my original purchase license. If I update beyond that, it gets converted to an annual subscription version, which like you, I'm not willing to pay. So I've turned off auto updates and decline any offers of upgrading. Everything is working to my satisfaction including including prompts to clean my hard drive whenever CCleaner can save more than 1 GB of wasted space. If you need to reinstall the product, you can get all the older versions from Filehippo.com. Just don't install anything newer than 5.58.7209 and it should work OK.

Despite this thread going on for around a year, it's only recently been clarified that the product was indeed sold by version in the past but has changed over the years into a subscription product. The problem is that people were able to keep updating to the latest version without realising they were updating into a different kind of product. Because Piriform didn't actively enforce the subscription requirement on people who had originally bought a version based product most customers weren't aware of this until Avast took over and did enforce it. However, you should be able to continue to use your original version without having to start paying an annual subscription and indeed by my experience, all the way up to version 5.58.7209 which was published on June 6th this year. You do need to turn off automatic updates though or you will find yourself updated into a subscription version. Since the recent discussion regarding the Filehippo archives, I can confirm they are working again so you should be able to download the version you need via this page: https://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/history/
  3. Piriform don't publish Malwarebytes. It's a different company, so there's not much point complaining about it here................ unless you know something I don't.

  5. The older versions aren't available. They're listed but if you click to download them, you're switched to the latest version. That goes for every legitimate file download site I checked. ( I'm not including crack/warez type sites. Why would I use them when I've paid for the software?
  6. So I tried that and various older versions are shown but when I clicked on "download this version" it got switched to the latest one instead. I tried the same thing with various download sites and every one that advertised V5.58.7209 switched to the latest version when I clicked on it. Unsurprisingly it seems Piriform don't want people running the older versions.
  7. If you look back to my post of June 26th this year, you'll that the pop ups started around then with version 5.59.7230. I had been running V5.58.7209 which suddenly had automatic updates reactivated shortly before. I had initially thought it was a bonus. However, when the next automatic update "upgraded" 🤣 my copy to version 5.59.7230 it reverted to the free version, losing automatic cleaning in the process and the pop ups started urging me to upgrade to the Professional version. Fortunately, I acted immediately and used system restore to go back a few days to when V5.58.7209 was still the installed version. Then I disabled automatic updates and put a block on anything to do with CCleaner or Piriform passing through the Windows firewall. It's been working fine ever since. The only pop ups I get are the ones relating to automatic cleaning. I don't get any advertising pop ups. Obviously I'm stuck with V5.58.7209 but that's fair enough and it does everything I need. The only problem is Piriform only offer downloads of the latest version so I may not be able to reinstall it if I change my PC but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

  9. Not a thing? If you mean I'm being paranoid and my precautions are not necessary, maybe that's right............ I'm not in any hurry to test that theory. The thing is, I'm running version V5.58.7209 and I'm not accepting any updates as they steal my open ended license. It's running just fine as I paid for at the moment.
  10. Use system restore to go back to a few days ago before you got this message. That should restore your installation to how it was. Then open CCleaner, decline to update to the latest vesionn. Go through all the options and disable anything that implies automatic updates. To be sure, use the cookie keeper in CCleaner to remove CCleaner and Avast's cookies from the "keep" list. Finally, use the windows firewall to prevent anything from CCleaner or Avast being allowed to communicate with your PC. Once you have done this. you will still get the occasional message urging you to update to the latest version but decline to do that and your original installation will be safe and automatic cleaning will still work.. Basically, everything we have ben told since the end of last year is a lie. Let the app update and you will lose your lifetime licence and you will revert to the free version which is missing various things such as automatic cleaning once you have a certain amount of recoverable space.
  11. Well thanks for that detailed explanation. It certainly explains why the confusion came about and does sound quite fair in theory. However, whatever the intention I don't believe things have gone exactly to plan: Although Piriform has maybe never advertised the paid CCleaner Professional product as being a "lifetime licence" it has certainly been presented it in such a way at least at times, that anyone considering purchasing the product would be unaware of a potential subscription requirement and make the reasonable presumption that it was indeed a "version based" product. I posted pictures of my box in page 2 of this thread and someone else posted a few days ago that they also have the original retail box showing no mention at all of a subscription. I've got no problem with something having a period of usable life defined by version. I have a couple of programs on my PC at the moment that I have been buying updated versions of since the 1990's. That is what I thought I was paying for when I purchased CCleaner pro. What has happened though, is the goalposts have been moved. I see you are in the UK. In which case you shoulf be familiar with the Sale of goods act and other consumer protection legislation, most of which are in common with the whole of EU. To sell something that has no mention of a limited licence at point of sale and then try to introduce one at a later date is absolutely a blatant case of misleading advertising, which could lead to a court fine, and if the EU courts got involved, a very heavy one. You say that people are entitled to use earlier versions related to when they made the purchase but unless they have the original installation media, there is no way to do that once they have upgraded to newer versions as the latest version is the only one available for download from the website. Even worse: This is already incorrect information. You kindly tested my registration key for me on the 15th of this month and confirmed it was a genuine key and that it was possible to register version 5.58.7209. So I tested it myself on my back up PC and installed first the trial version of Pro and then the Free version and found the key was able to register both of them. I did notice at the time that the automatic update feature had been re-enabled so I'm not sure how I came by that version as I have always been doing manual updates but I thought that was a bonus. I found this week though that the automatic update feature was effectively a trojan horse as when I woke my PC from sleep on Monday morning (June 24) I got a pop up window on my desktop announcing that my licence for CCleaner had expired and that automatic cleaning was no longer available unless I renewed it. I can't remember what else it said but it appears you do now lose certain features you have been able to use even if the licence was shown as expired. There was certainly no advance warning this was going to happen. I didn't open the actual CCleaner program. Instead, I closed the pop up and used System Restore to go back to the previous day when I had V5.58.7209 meaning the automatic cleaning and all other features were still working. Then, I opened the program itself and got a message saying there was a new version available and asking if I wanted to download it. I declined, and instead deactivated automatic updates and just to be sure blocked CCleaner update in the Windows Firewall. Up to now, everything appears to be working as it was although I get a prompt urging me to upgrade to version 5.59.7230 if I open the program. Since that is the version that seems to disable the Pro features I decline. In fact, I very rarely open the program itself normally as the automatic cleaning feature is the only one I need on the whole. I'll just leave things as they are for now. Interestingly, as I mentioned previously, I had tried my key on my backup machine the same day you did eleven days ago and it worked. Unfortunately, I left it with the free version installed. I took a look earlier today and decided to try the key to see what would happen expecting it to be declined. Instead, as you can probably see your end, it was accepted so that one is also registered now as a working Pro version 5.58.7209. Of course, I get the prompt to upgrade to V5.59.7230 but I declined and deactivated automatic updates. I would have disabled Firewall access to CCleaner update too but it wasn't even listed so it must have been requested by the updated version before I reverted on my main machine. I'm interested to see if other people are having the same experiences now.
  12. The EULA isn't visible on the installation CD. It only becomes visible after the executable installation file has been expanded and the installation is complete. I can't remember what it actually says at that point now but I think it changes every time you upgrade to the latest version and of course if the automatic upgrade feature is active, that means you don't actually get a chance to agree to it.
  13. If you download either the free version or the Professional Trial version from Piriforms site, they will install OK on a PC running Windows 10. In my case, I can now use my original 2015 key to upgrade or register it as a Pro version, which I couldn't do in the past. It says license expired but that doesn't seem to stop anything working. However my version was a retail boxed version so I can't guarantee you'll be able to register it too. You may as well just try. It's a very small download that only takes a minute or so to download and install. If it comes to the worst, you have the free version to use and it does most of the things you're likely to need.
  14. Well, I just installed the 14 day trial on my backup PC and the serial appears to have worked. It now says that it's registered to me the same as my main PC does. It also says the Product Status is Expired - the same as my main PC. So I won't know for sure unless I leave it installed for 14 days. I have definitely had that serial number rejected twice in the past though. First of all when I got an email saying there was an updated version. I followed the link and installed it but it wouldn't accept the key. I had to delete the program, reinstall from the original disc and update within the program itself. More recently, I bought my wife a Windows 10 tablet for Christmas last year, which doesn't have a DVD drive, so I tried to install from the download. Once again, I got a system message that the serial number was invalid. Apps like CCleaner aren't important to her anyway so I uninstalled it. As for there not being substantial differences between Free and Pro versions I'm sure there were some very relevant differences for me four years ago but unfortunately can't remember the details. I think it was to do with secure file deletion of custom folders and automatic ability to handle system files though. There must have been something as I'm not one to buy software when a free version that does the same thing is available. So I uninstalled the CCleaner Pro that I just installed on my other PC and downloaded and installed the free version to see what the differences are. As you say, (Replying to Dave CCleaner) most of the features I need are in that too now. but Scheduling, prompting to clean, automatic browser cleaning, multiple users, automatic updates are all disabled and shown as Pro only.

Whilst it's true Piriform were selling a one year licenced version then and I was aware of that before I bought my copy, they were also selling non time limited versions. Maybe those were only some of the ones sold through third party vendors as it seems most of the people complaining in this thread didn't buy the digital download version direct from Piriform. I myself bought a sealed boxed version from a third party retailer, costing considerably more than the digital download because and in the full knowledge it wasn't a limited licence version.

If you look back to page two of this discussion, I posted photographs of the disc and box, which clearly show no mention of it being a time limited subscription product. No mention of automatic upgrades either I've just noticed. Also, I don't get the pop ups other people complain about and can upgrade to the latest version free of charge using the "check for updates" feature in the bottom right hand corner of the start window. I don't get automatic updates and don't actually remember ever getting them even in the first year. That certainly was never a considereation as to whether to buy the product. What I do get regularly, is emails recommending I upgrade to the latest version. I did try doing that once but having downloaded and installed it, I found my key didn't work and the free version was missing many important features I use. That prompted me to come to the support site to find out why, only to find other people complaining of the same problem in this thread. Fortunately I can reinstall from the original disc and upgrade inside the program. People who have lost their original installation media don't have that luxury. Also, I have to disagree with your assertion that there was little difference between the free version and the Pro version. It's four years ago now but if I recall correctly, the reason I was prepared to pay for the Pro version is because you can specify many system and custom folders of your own choice to be cleaned, set the level of secure cleaning required including wiping free space and have it done automatically. At the time, I was looking for a replacement for Windows Washer, which I'd been using for years but had been discontinued. The free version of CCleaner didn't do all the things that WW did but the Pro version mostly does. My copy monitors my C Drive and a pop up prompts me to run the cleaning operation when it can recover more than 500MB. It happens nearly every day. I'm currently using version 5.58.7209. and will probably revert to that if I start to see intrusive advertising later this year in a newer version. It does everything I need now.
  17. If you ever need to reinstall after the first year and download the latest version. Your license code won't work with it. The same thing goes for if you follow the links from the frequent emails urging you to upgrade to the latest version. If you do that, your installion will change to the free version and your code won't work. The only way to keep using the Pro version is if you have the original installation files or update from within the program itself by selecting the "check for updates" feature in the bottom right hand corner.
  18. I can't even install the latest Pro version without being forced to pay for it if I can't provide an updated code. My original unlimited installations code only works with the original DVD disc. That works with a conventional desktop PC but not a new Windows 10 tablet that doesn't have a DVD drive.
  19. The thing that most of us are complaining about though, is that we went all the way through the purchase without seeing any mention of a subscription. Not only that, we went some further years before we were suddenly asked for more money out of the blue.

Well, having said I couldn't find a EULA on my installion disc, or in the installation folder on my PC, I realised this week that there is actually a copy in the options section of the user interface. I still cannot see anything in there that would suggest my copy is subject to an annual subscription though. As far as I was concerned when I bought it, it was advertised as a one off payment. I wouldn't be so sure the one advertised by Codes Depot isn't legitimate. They are certainly not the only retailer under the impression what they are selling is not a subscription product. Interestingly, I received an email inviting me to upgrade to the latest version a couple of days ago. It was headed: Introducing CCleaner v5.50, to boost your slowing PC I know from previous experience that if I followed that link and downloaded it, I would be told my license has expired. On the other hand, in the past, if I ignored the email and used the program itself to check for updates it usually updates itself in a matter of seconds without a problem. Iwas a bit apprehensive considering the contents of this discussion but decided to go ahead as I do have a full system backup made each day to an external hard drive. I took the plunge, and it upgraded without a hitch as usual.

  23. Here are pictures of all 6 sides of the box and of the tray and installation disc inside. The box was sealed, but there was nothing inside apart from the cardboard packing tray and disc in a paper cover. No instruction booklet or anything else. As you can see, there is zero indication that this might be a subscription product. It was priced at $33.99, which I imagine was considerably more than the initial subsciption when sold on that basis. I've checked the disc and there is no easily readable EULA on that and I cannot see one in the installation folder on my PC now it's installed either. It seems the only way the EULA could ever have been read is if the installion process had been interrupted to see it then and how many people do that? Even then, the disc can only be accessed after the packaging seal is broken so I doubt it anything in the EULA that contradicted the apparent sale conditions would hold up in law in this country, or anywhere in the EU. The US and other countries will have their own consumer protecion laws, which may be different. As I said previously, I haven't had any request for additional payments, so it could be the boxed retail version I have, does have a different EULA to the direct download from Piriform. The only way I could see that though is by doing a clean install from the original disc and I don't have a spare PC to do that.
  24. I seem to be in a slightly different position to most of the people commenting here in as much as my copy is a boxed retail version allowing installation on unlimited PC's for home use. As such, I currently have it on two desktops and two laptops, all of which have been able to automatically update to the latest version whenever it's released for no extra charge. I bought mine on February 20th 2015. There was zero mention on the sealed box or the sale details of any further subscriptions ever being required . I have both the original box and the sale invoice in front of me as I'm writing this. The only hiccup I've come across in the past three years is when I need to do a fresh installation, for example when I have built myself a new PC. If I download the latest professional trial version and try to upgrade it using my key it says it's expired, so up to now, I've always got around the problem by installing from the original disc and then upgrading to the latest version from that.That has always worked without a hitch. Today is the first time that hasn't worked and that's because I just bought a new tablet for my wife, which obviously hasn't got an optical drive so I copied the files from my original disc to a USB stick and tried to install it from that but got a system message that it isn't compatible with the version of Windows the tablet is running (It's the very latest Windows 10 October update one installed this week) So, I downloaded the professional trial version, tried entering my key, which of course didn't work and then came to this site to try and find how to fix it. I tried the "Lost key" link but that didn't work. I didn't buy it directly from Piriform so they don't appear to have any record of my email address. Finally I've come to the forum to see if it's known problem and found it is. I haven't had any of these nag screens other people have mentioned. I was using the free version previously but paid $33.99 on the basis that it was a one off payment, was useful for my main PC to have the extra utilities it offers and the fact I could use it on my other machines was a bonus. They don't get much use so the free version is probably good enough for them anyway. There's no way I would ever pay an annual subscription for any software though. There are multitudes of programs offered free or for a one off payment as an alternative. I won't be happy if I get asked for extra payment to continue using what I already have, although I accept the time might come when Windows or PC specification progress might mean a completely different version might have to be purchased. I have a number of programs I've been using since the 1990's that I have had to replace with a newer version multiple times. However, I won't be considering anything that requires a subscription. Although I bought the software from a US retailer, I am in the UK. In this country, and I believe, throughout the EU, it would be completely illegal to sell sealed software in a box that has no mention of a subscription and then request further payment a year later. That is classed as misleading advertising and can result in a court conviction and a large fine. In the case of multiple cases of such malpractice, the fines can run into millions of pounds or Euros as some of the biggest US companies have found to their cost. It is a grey area in my case though as the seller is in the States and I'm in this country so I'm not sure which consumer protection laws apply. Anyway TL;DR, CCleaner Pro has definitely been sold in the past with the appearance to all intents and purposes of being subscription free.
