CCleaner remains open in the system tray when the program is closed, ...............,  Is this a bug (I assume it is)

It isn't a bug, it's simply the way that Windows works.

Those options (Smart Cleaning and Auto Updating) each have to run a background process to work properly.
So if either one, or both, are enabled then Windows puts an icon in the system tray to show that CCleaner is running something in the background.

  2. Which version of Windows are you running?

Try Right-Clicking on CCleaner and select 'Run as administrator'.

    image.png

If you can get it open that way then go to Performance Optimiser and 'Wake Up' whatever you had Slept.

Being honest though I don't see how simply sleeping some apps would lose your Admin privileges.
You may have something different going on, it sounds as if Windows may have put you in a default 'guest' account for some reason, that can happen sometimes.

  3. When you say CCleaner is starting with Windows do you mean that CCleaner is opening a window on screen, or that it is putting an icon in the system tray?
There are two things that will put an icon in the tray when Windows starts:

    1. Options>Updates>"Keep CCleaner updated automatically".
    2. Options>Smart Cleaning>"Enable Smart Cleaning".

Either one of those if turned on needs to run as a background task, so Windows puts an icon in the tray to show that the background task is running.

For the second issue with the Quick Access shortcuts - are you using Health Check or Custom Clean?
If It's Custom Clean then what settings do you have for Windows Exploter and System?

  4. Please check Hazelnut's advice.

And also the setting for 'Startup Boost' in Edge itself, turn it off.

But you still haven't  confirmed just what problem you are having.

Is it a popup, or a browser opening? Does it happen all the time or only occasionally?

You belive it's caused by CCleaner, it may be, but does it only happen after you have run CCleaner? What happens on the machines that still have CCleaner installed if you don't actually run CCleaner?

  5. What does the popup say? Can you post a screenshot of one?

I'm trying to work out if they are coming from CCleaner, which they may well be depending on certain settings, or if they are from Edge itself.

We should be able to tell you how to stop it, but a screenshot would help identify which setting(s) need changing and in which app.

  6. No; as said the root cause is something that has been changed in a recent update to Avira itself.
As you say it used to be OK with cleaners, but Avira recently changed something.

Alternative cleaner? At the moment none - Any cleaner that cleans the Windows Temporary folder will give the same problem if you are using Avira.
The problem isn't any particular cleaner, it's Avira itself.

The built in Windows Security is all that you need these days, most users don't really need a 3rd party AV anymore, especially not a free one.
(There are advanced users who want a bit more protection, and so will get a paid for, professional, Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware addition).
Don't take my word for it, have a read of this from a well respected PC magazine: https://www.pcworld.com/article/797877/do-i-need-windows-antivirus-software.html

Windows Security rivals other programs at sniffing out viruses. While this wasn’t always the case, Microsoft’s detection has improved considerably in recent years, to the point that the independent AV-TEST Institute regularly awards it a perfect 6 out 6 in protection, usability, and performance, beating industry averages.

Whoever you ask about "the best" free protection will give you a different answer.
Personally I use the built in Windows Security, and back it up with Malwarebytes Browser Guard (Free) and a weekly scan with Malwarebytes Free.
You can also get Malwarebytes Premium (yearly licence) that can run in real time alongside Windows Security, so you get 2 layers of protection.

well that explains why the version of CCleaner that auto launches during the update process is already on the latest version.

    That's what I expected.

This particular updating crash doesn't really matter because CC has been updated despite one of the parallel running installers crashing.

So there is no need to run the update again, it has already been done.

Which might explain why it seems to be low down on the to-be-fixed list and hasn't been done yet?
In practical effect it's just a confusing message that occasionally shows and the update gets done anyway.

I've just done some more testing and can confirm a couple of things:

    1. This write error is more prevalent if you have a SSD as your C: drive. - Everytime that I update this way on a SSD I get the write error.
(It happens with SATA SSD's as well as M2's).
    2. The update is completed despite the error.

    The testing:

    1. Install 6.02 and use 'Check for Updates' in the UI.
    2. When the update starts drag the two installer windows apart so that both can be seen.
    3. Get the write error.
    4. Click the 'Abort' button on the error, one of the installer windows closes.
It's a bit confusing until you work it out - but that one has closed because it has completed the update.
(If you haven't seperated the installer windows you would be forgiven for thinking it was all one installer that had stuck).
    5. The other (aborted) installer window now appears to be stuck, but the update to 6.03 has completed and CCleaner 6.03 promptly opens.
    6. Close or minimise CCleaner and cancel the stuck window.

    Capture.JPG

I'll flag this testing up to the staff again, as it's happening every time on SSDs then a fix needs bringing up the priority list.

In the meantime anyone having this issue could do what I normally do.

    1. Don't use Automatic updating.
    2. When an update is announced, or notified in CCleaner, don't use update from within CCleaner itself.
    3. Instead go to the builds page: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds
    4. Download either the Standard or Slim installer from there and use that to do a new install over the top of the existing CCleaner.
    5. Don't uninstall the old one first, if you do uninstall then you will lose your customised settings and will also need to re-enter your licence key.
  8. Not quite.

The 2 instances of the installer  will often run side by side without trying to write the same file at the same time. And it's only both trying to write the same file at once which triggers the error.

In fact the testing back in March 2021 showed that it happens everytime that you update from within CCleaner and most users never see the write clash error.

One thing I want to try when I get home is whether this error is more or less prone to happening with an SDD than a HDD? It may be that the faster speeds of an SSD may make a difference.

I don't have Win11 yet so can't test with that, but suspect that most new machines with Win11 will have a fast NVME SSD as standard.

  9. Are you using Avira software? In particular their antivirus.

Avira Free Security  is known to be causing apps to be suddenly corrupted if the user runs CCleaner, Bleachbit, or other cleaning softwares.

There is a workaround by going to CCleaner's, or the other cleaning app's, options and "excluding" the "C:\Windows\Temp\sentry_temp" folder from being cleaned.
(Nobody knows just why clearing a Windows temporary folder is causing Avira to corrupt various apps, Avira will have to fix that).

    See this previous thread,

ooh?! wow.. so its already been discussed.

Yes, I've not seen it myself for a while so though that it had been fixed.
There again I don't normally use the built in update function, instead I download a new installer from the builds page and use that.

Back in March 2021, in that thread that Redwolfe_98 linked, I took a look at just what was going on:
    https://community.ccleaner.com/topic/62464-double-installation-dialog-with-manual-update/#comment-335649

The file writing clash and so the error only happend ocasionally on Win 10, I'm just wondering if it is more likely with Win 11?

I've not managed to test it properly because you can't deliberately reproduce the write error, but I think that even when you get the error you will find that CCleaner has been updated anyway.
That's because it's caused by 2 installer instances running at once, and only one of them crashes, so the other should still complete the update.

If you see the error again next time you update then instead of trying to update again open CCleaner and check if it has already been updated.
It would be interesting to know if that is the case like I suspect.

I there's no way I can manually add these to the "cookies to keep" section unless they're already on my computer.

    I'm not sure that the issue is with cookies to keep, but as you know the names then you can add them to the list in the following way;

Righ click the white space anywhere in the 'keep' side and in the menu that pops up select 'Add', that will bring up a box where you can manually enter the cookie(s) you want to keep.

  12. If you want to be logged out of sites then in Custom Clean's applications tab tick the "Session" box for Firefox.

Clearing a browsers session closes all the open tabs, logs you out of websites, etc.
ie. Cleaning it removes the traces of what you did in your last browsing session.

    image.png

If that still doesn't work then you probably have your Firefox synced, and the syncing is restoring them the next time you open Firefox.

  13. It definitely sounds that something is blocking it from starting.
Whatever it is isn't blocking the installer which is why you can run it from there, but is blocking the app itself when you try to launch it.

It might be a permissions issue, are you still admin when you try to run it the second time?

Another couple of things to try to find what the problem may be.

Disconnect from the internet and see if CCleaner will run.
Boot Windows into Safe Mode with Networking (Safe Mode with Internet connectivity) and see if CCleaner will run.

Instructions for getting into safe mode in case you need them: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-your-pc-in-safe-mode-in-windows-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234#WindowsVersion=Windows_11

  14. AppCrash is a Windows error that is simply saying that the application has crashed for some reason, and there can be many reasons why.

Some common reasons for an AppCrash happening are:

    • A Registry corruption.
    • A Virus or malware is interfering with the app.
    • The computer is out of system/virtual memory.
    • A bug in the code of the application.
    • The operating system is incompatible with the application.
    • There are other less common possibilities.

    Tackling the easier ones first:

CCleaner isn't known to have problems with Win11, but as Win 11 is still quite new it's not really fully stable yet and even minor Windows Updates can have funny effects.
But we'll discount compatibility issues for now.

I doubt that it's malware but it never hurts to run a scan with a tool like Malwarebytes just in case you have picked up an infection, the free version is fine for scanning and removal of malware. It won't interfere with the built in Windows AV.
    https://www.malwarebytes.com/solutions/free-antivirus

Next I would download a new CCleaner installer, just in case the one you have already got corrupted when you downloaded it.
Uninstall CCleaner from your machine if you haven't already, make sure that you have your licence key noted down because you will need to register it again.
(You can remove the old installer as welll).
Download the 'Slim' installer, it's the 3rd one down here: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds
    Use that to reinstall CCleaner.

Let us know if that fixes things for you.

  15. So you can run CCleaner from the installer when you install it, but next time you try it will not open.
This is usually a problem with an antivirus, certain AV's are worse for it than others.

3-weeks ago is about when CCleaner last updated to a new version, so your particular AV may not be recognising that new version yet.

The first thing to try is updating your antivirus.

Which antivirus are you using? If you could also tell us which version number it is that will help.
