  1. I've had this happen myself a few times before following a Windows  'Patch Tuesday' update.

The Windows update sometimes seems to mess something up with the Skip UAC setting.

Normally switching it off in CCleaner, (or any other app with a UAC override that's affected)  closing and reopening it, then switching it on again sorts it out.

But you say that you have already tried that.

In the odd time that's happened to me and turning it off/on hasn't worked I've just reinstalled CCleaner. (Or the other app that was affected).

Make a note of your licence key, and a backup of your .ini file if you use one, just in case you need them after reinstalling.

  2. You will need to contact the support team for licencing issues, we can't deal with them on the open forum for obvious security reasons.

What you report can happen if you purchase a brand new key rather than renewing the old key, (eg. if you upgraded from Pro to ProPlus that would need a new key), it's the old key that is expiring not the new one.

See the last section here which explains why you may be being asked to renew even though you have just purchased again, it has the email address to contact support if needed:

    https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/articles/360050413792#view-your-ccleaner-license-status-in-options-about-license-information--0-2

Note that you no longer have to go Options > About > License Information as said there. (Although you can still do it that way).
There is now a more direct: Options > License Key

  3. Could your previous download have been corrupted?

Not in a way that would affect multiple exe files but nothing else, a corrupted install would almost certainly crash if you tried to run it - unless you got it from a dodgy  site and it had been specifically modified to do so. (Never say never, strange hackers are out there).

Did you carry out any of the steps that AdvancedSetup recommended with the push notifications and cleaning up the Chrome?

He knows his stuff, even if he no longer recommends CCleaner. (That's fair enough it used to be a 'go to' recommendation from those experts but the newer features in CCleaner don't sit well with them).

  4. At least you know for sure that your machine is clean and it's not malware causing the issue.

Obviously if CCleaner was breaking exe's then this forum, and the rest of the web, would be full of complaints.

So  it's difficult to tell just what is going on for you.

I assume you had downloaded CCleaner from the official page, but just in case try downloading a new installer from here: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds
(Many of us use the 'Slim' installer there, it's the same CCleaner but the installer doesn't offer you other softwares).

    Other thoughts:
Possibly a failing disc? Have you tried running chkdsk.

You say that all the modified exes show the same modified time stamp.
Can you correlate that time stamp to when something in particular was happening? ie. do they coincide with when you ran CCleaner, or with a Windows Update, or an antivirus scan, or some other event.

Of course if removing CCleaner stops it happening then your quick solution is obvious, stop using CCleaner.
But it would be interesting to know just what the underlying cause was/is.

  5. Know what you mean. I use a gmail automatically forwarded to my own domain email address.

I usually drink Sam Smiths Sovereign, but we got a bad barrel in the last delivery and they only deliver over here from Tadcaster every 2 weeks. (The dray horses  get knackered coming through the mountains, LOL).

So it's Worthies (or even John Smiths) until Wednesday or Thursday.

  6. I've just sat down in the pub and a thought struck me.

I see you have a uni email.

Is this a university machine, maybe an endpoint on a uni network, and if so  are the affected softwares ones that were installed by the university or using a uni licence?

If it's a network endpoint then CCleaner home version might well be removing some logfile or similar that the uni's servers need to be there to recognise the apps as being valid.

Anyway lets see what MB come up with.

If and when I get to the bottom of this I'll post here.

That would be interesting to see.

It's a diverse range of apps to be being tampered with, and if something is modifying multiple exe's themselves and at the same times then it is very strange.
(A software updater tool might update more than one at a similar time, though that shouldn't corrupt them).

You have to suspect either a glitch in Windows itself, or possibly malware.

EDIT - I see that you have already posted at Malwarebytes, let them take a look at the logs and see what may be happening.

  8. As you are having problems with multiple unconnected apps then it would tend to indicate that something else is going on.

CCleaner wouldn't touch .exe files, but the Registry Cleaner could mess up a reg entry for one which is why I asked.
It would be highly unusual though for it to mess up a bunch of them at once.
I suggest that you stop using the reg cleaner anyway, it isn't necessary on anything above Windows 7 see the PS below.

Just to be extra sure it's not CCleaner though are you using Health Check or Custom Clean?
Have you used the Driver Updater or Software Updater?

I think your best course is to get your machine checked over, just in case you have malware or a virus.
We are not allowed to do that on here, but we can recommend certain places that will do it for free.

You can get one-to-one help from trained experts at any one of the following sites. Which one you choose is up to you.:

    https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/9573-im-infected-what-do-i-do-now/
    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-help/
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/forum/37-virus-spyware-malware-removal/
    https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

They all have experts who specialse malware removal, but will check a computer thoroughly for other problems as well, they will take you through things step-by-step.
Be sure to do what they say and only what they say until they give you the all clear.
Only use one help/removal service at once, trying to use 2 at once will interfere one with the other and they will know.

PS. You shouldn't really use the Registry Cleaner unless you have a problem, see this:

  9. I believe (think) that it is related to CCleaner (or some other app) checking for updates.

Do you have automatic updates, or notification of updates turned on?

I think that if you have them turned on then when an app checks for an update the Windows Restart Manager fires up (10000) to check if any update that does get installed needs a Windows Restart, if not, or if there is no update, then Restart Manager closes again (10001).

As I say that's my take on  how Restart Manager works, although I suspect  that it may not be that  simple - if anyone else knows any more about it please chime in.

  10. You shouldn't (can't fully) uninstall Edge anymore, - as Microsoft say it's now an integral part of the operating system.

Many/most of the articles you will see about uninstalling Edge were written:

    1. When both Internet Explorer and Edge were automatically installed with Windows.
    2. When it was 'Old' Edge and not the newer Edge Chromium.

Back then uninstalling the Old Edge would still leave IE as a backup for the system and other apps to use.
And that still happened for a while after Edge Chromium first came out, IE was still there if you removed Edge Chromium.
But IE is no longer installed with Windows, and whilst you can uninstall parts of Edge Chromium (using PowerShell as Andavari says) doing that can/will cause problems with your Operating System and with other apps.

Just install the browser of your choice and make it the default browser - then simply ignore Edge.
(Unless you need to use it because something goes wrong with your preferred browser).

  11. I wouldn't worry about it.

The subscription cost wouldn't be increased for a simple matter such as this, people do get new computers now and again and the system recognises that. As long as a licence doesn't contine in use on multiple computers then it's not a problem.

But for more about managing your subscription take a look at: https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/articles/360020674812-How-do-I-manage-my-CCleaner-subscription-#how-do-i-manage-my-ccleaner-subscription--0-0

If it's a university machine they will (should) clear and reset it before giving it to anyone else and so CCleaner will no longer be on it.

If you want more confirmation then email support@ccleaner.com using the email that you used to purchase your licence.

  12. When something gets skipped it's (almost always) because that application is still open or still running in the background.

(If CCleaner isn't asking you if you want to close it then you've clicked on 'don't show this again' at some time in the past).

Rebooting the computer closes the running app, and so then CCleaner can clean it.

Windows Photos/Microsoft Photos will launch itself in the background at times to do searches or 'photo enhancement', which can cause problems, although it should stop when you start using the computer again it doesnt always stop straight away.

This is a bit old but it might help: https://www.tenforums.com/performance-maintenance/7781-photos-background-task-host-high-cpu-usage.html

  13. As you say you are not a techie I'm asuming that CCleaner has been installed at the 'standard' location and that you didn't do a custom install to install it on another drive or a different directory.

    To fix the shortcut:

Right-click on the desktop shortcut icon.
In the menu that pops up click on 'Properties'. (it should be at the very bottom of the popup).
A window will open like this one, select the 'Shortcut' tab:

    image.png

Where it says 'Target' you want to say either "C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner64.exe" like that one above does,
    or "C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner.exe"
(It doesn't matter which one it says unless you only have a 32-bit computer, in which case it should be the second one).

If it doesn't say either of those make a note of what it does say, then change it, and click on 'Apply'.
If it says that you need Administrator permissions then click on 'Continue'.
You can now close that window.

That should have fixed your desktop shortcut.
If it hasn't then come back, there are another couple of ways to do it.

  14. Works fine on images here, what search options did you have set?

I ususally search for duplicate images on Size and Content, so that it finds duplicate images even if the name has been changed.

Be aware that even a slight change to an image, such as red-eye reduction, will make it no longer an exact duplicate.

Here's a simple setup and results - searching just the 'Pictures' folder and sub-folders for all filetypes, you can see it found a couple where the name had been changed..

  15. OK, after runing CCleaner in debug mode and looking at the log produced I think I can see what's happening.

It isn't removing that "SiteSecurityServiceState.txt" that's causing it at all.

As well as deleting that particular file, cleaning the 'Site Preferences' appears to be resetting  the javascript file "prefs.js".

I can't think of any way to prevent that happening other than unticking 'Site Preferences' for Firefox.

  16. Some interesting results from my testing.

I set the zoom to 150%, closed Firefox and then ran an analyze in CCleaner of just the Firefox Site Preferences.

The only file it listed under 'Site Preferences' for Firefox was "SiteSecurityServiceState.txt" - which is a 0kb file and on opening it it's empty (as you would expect with 0kb).

BUT clearing it with CCleaner did reset the zoom to 100%.

To double check I reset the zoom to 150%, closed Firefox, and manually deleted that file without using CCleaner.
Reopened Firefox and this time the zoom had remained at 150%.

Repeating and watching just what CCleaner is removing from that directory when it cleans 'Site Preferences' it is only removing that one file.

Very strange that deleting the file manually gives a different result than having CCleaner remove it?

I'll think of some more testing, but for now my best suggestion is to untick Firefox 'Site Preferences' if you want to keep the zoom level.

  17. We can't deal directly with licencing on the open forum for security reasons.
You need to contact support by emailing them at: support@ccleaner.com

You will need to provide them with your old email address so that they can then change it to your new one.
If you don't know your old email address then any details you can provide them with of your purchase may help them to track it down.

  18. We need more information please.

    What Windows version?
    What browser?
    What CCleaner version?
Are you using Custom Clean or Health Check?

Why do you think that cookies are being removed even though excluded, is it something in particular that happens?

Often when people think a cookie being removed is causing something to happen/not happen it's actually something else and not a cookie at all.
eg. Clearing a browsers 'Session' will log you out of all websites, some think that's a cookie problem but it's nothing to do with cookies at all.
