You should switch to FreeDOS, because it doesn't contain a proprietary "registry" that can get bloated and corrupted.
I have to disagree with you DJ. FreeDOS is rubbish. You want Linspire.

I have to agree with DJ on this one. The one alt. I can think of, if you can't get Task Manager to come up. You can always try Safe Mode and see what happens. But, I doubt it will do anygood, it can't hurt to try.

You must have missed one then. There was only 7 when I went.

From the Beginner's Guide:
II. WindowsOn your left you have check boxes to select what you would like to clean or not to clean.
Tip: I recommend using the default checked boxes and running Advanced maybe once a month or so.
At the bottom of Progress you have Analyze and Run Cleaner.
Clicking on Analyze will create a list of everything CCleaner is going to clean. You can right click in he big white box and save the list as a text file.
Clicking on Run Cleaner will clean everything. You can right click in he big white box and save the list as a text file. Note: you do not have to run Analyze, if you do not wish too.
------------------------------------------
III. Applications
On your left you have check boxes to select what you would like to clean or not to clean.
Tip: I recommend having them all checked. Unless you are a business or use the documents alot, I would uncheck the Office box under Applications.
The Applications cleaning is tied in with the Windows cleaning, so it cleans them both at once. You do not have to click on each individual tab to clean Windows and Applications.

Maybe CCleaner should clean .log and .bak and .tmp files
CCleaner does clean .log and .tmp. That's one of it's main features, based on program of course. Plus, it's always being worked on. Either by MrG to add to CCleaner or me working on it in winapp2.ini. .bak is a bad idea.
#1. It will just recreate it.
#2. Will have no .bak incase you have a problem.
#3. Backup reasons.
Empty files and folders is not a good.
Files: 98% of the time they will recreate themselves or it will cause a program error.
Folders: Can cause program errors.
Program Files\Common Files\ can cause serious crashes with programs installed unless you know what you are doing.
Clean what in Documents and Settings? CCleaner already does, a lot.

If you want to reformat to put in a different OS (Example from Win98SE to XP) then you want a 98SE boot disk and do format c: /s
But if you are just reformatting to have everything fresh, just pop in the CD, boot to CD, and let it do the rest.
-
As of right now, no. This is a feature that has been requested many times.

I have never had a Windows PC without installing TweakUI. It's just one of those must have tools for Windows.
