  1. It is advisable to use Vista's built in firewall with NOD32, BOClean, and DefenseWall? I have been using Zone Alarm Pro for a long time, but I wanna try new stuff. Will a good HIPS and BOClean replace a good firewall and anti-spyware (Windows Defender).
  2. Was the user logged in on the https setting? Everyone who has Gmail should just be sure to use https all the time.
  3. Most of these bots are most likely careless or ignorant internet users. Even if 99% of all internet users used common sense security practices, one percent would be roughly 11 million computers/users (using 1,114,274,426 total users from internet world stats).
  4. I could never find the setting from the Vista writing software.
  5. I initially bought a laptop with Vista Ultimate 64-bit. It was fine, but there are some more compatibility problems because it is 64 bit and I really didn't need the extras, so I went with Home Premium. I have had very little problems with it - I actually like it. However, I would recommend getting Vista with a new pc only, or a least a clean install. Remember though, I am not an avid gamer. I would have never rented a pc like that. I usually go to electronic stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, and CompUSA in my area) and see what's there. I then go to reputable online sites and find at least similar models that are usually cheaper and have no taxes. The only downside to this are returns - (however you break even with Amazon since shipping is free).
  6. I used the built in UDF burner that makes a DVD run like a USB drive. However, the speed was incredibly slow. I burned roughly 2 gigs that would have taken about "3 hours." In Roxio Creator Basic, estimated time was about 5-10 minutes. Both burning apps are made by Roxio. What is going on?
  7. Anybody know if there will be offline defragmentation like in Raxco's perfect disk?
  8. Microsoft just needs to stop with adding too many product tiers. Hopefully most users are buying Home Premium and they will have to cut prices on Ultlimate.
  9. I never even knew about that. Besides, I use it because of the SSL full encryption.
  10. The most surprising part is that vendors like NOD32 and F-prot are doing relatively poorly. Also, Symantec appears to be back on track as one of the best, even better than Kaspersky. Keep in mind that the test bed is new, and that I am still waiting for the new AV-comparatives report.
  11. This is good for the computing industry as a whole. Microsoft will be forced to actually make higher quality products if Apple and the Linux world can prove they have better products. However, Microsoft's response appears to be "sue the Linux distributions." To be fair, Apple would do the same thing if they had that market share, their softy hippie like advertising is nothing like their shrewd competitive mentality. The "evil microsoft" argument is garbage. Jobs runs a much tighter ship. Microsoft can't even lock down their activation servers!
  12. I'd recommend the new HP Pavilion DV9500's which have the newer Core 2 Duos. However, they only have the top-of-the-line Intel graphics chip (which is not that fast). If you can wait a little while longer they will either have the Nvidias or ATIs.
  13. I prefer Gmail because it provides SSL encryption for free, not just for the login. The only other service that I know provides this is Hushmail, and you must pay for it if you want a usable amount of storage...currently I think it's like 2 MB or something.
  14. I think it's a Vista specific problem. Also, turning secure deletion off and on doesn't seem to be as effective as just toggling through the deletion methods.
  15. Also, just turning the secure deletion method off and on solves the problem too. Be sure to click analyze before you clean too.
  16. Just toggle through the secure deletion methods; the act of changing them works for me.
  17. I am in Vista and CCleaner has been shutting down 100% of the time when I have secure deletion enabled. However, If I keep of changing the secure deletion method, it works. I set the deletion method to one overwrite, then back to 7. I run CCleaner, and then set it back to 1 overwrite. The next time I set it to 7, run it, and back to 1 again. That is the cycle that has worked for me - but it's all about toggling through the settings. It is also helpful to always click "Analyze" before cleaning - not sure why, but it works. (I posted this in the bug section, but I thought it would be helpful here too.)

  19. I learned that the hard way; the CCleaner registry tool deleted my Synaptics trackpad files and I had to reinstall them. Good thing I have a mouse too. I am in Vista 64 bit.
  20. I am having the same secure deletion crashes in Vista Ultimate 64-bit, even when I try to run the program as administrator.
  21. I have been using CurrPorts for a while and I always see active connections to sites like cg-in-f164.google.com even when I am not on a Google website. I know that CCleaner uses google syndication, but I see it a lot on sites where they don't use it. What is going on?
  22. I hope all these bugs are for Vista users. It appears that programming for full Vista compatibility is a damn big bear.
  23. Even overwriting once makes any form of software recovery impossible. So for practical purposes, a free space wipe with one overwrite is enough. For the extra paranoid, 3 will do. Unless you have highly confidential data that someone will stop at nothing to get, you can go to 7 for free space writing - incredibly slow. For sensitive files (Not free-space), I overwrite 7 times with Eraser because I can and it is still fast. Even though this is an after the fact response, I recommend using Truecrypt for sensitive files on the computer, and monthly free-space wipes. If the computer is stolen, the free space is muck and the encrypted files are as good as wiped. Iolo offers a commercial free space wipe program that will search for previously deleted files (like recuva) and only overwrite those clusters. However, I heard that Recuva will off that feature soon.
  24. Nobody seems to know about this question. I read that you can have a standard user account for normal use so UAC can be turned off. Does UAC actually bog down performance to a noticeable level?
  25. Anyone know how to transfer all the settings from the main administrator account to a new standard user account? The wizard in Vista is only for transferring from one computer to another.
