I consider to reinstall XP on one of my machines. May I ask is fresh XP install pulling updates from Windows Update or the Microsoft service has been already abandoned?

Want To Remove A Service (Windows Task Manager)

sc delete <xxxx> from command prompt -
RSSOwl from http://www.rssowl.org

I use RSSOwl. I've moved from Firefox + Sage and never looked back.
-
How much costs JKDefrag ?
-
If you have checked System -> Memory Dumps on Windows tab, it does.
-
At the moment I use Firefox with Sage extension as a RSS reader. I see a few issues so I started to look for a stand-alone and free RSS reader. Google points some readers but before I will check them I'd like to ask about your opinion. Any hints will be appreciated.

So DupKiller is for you.
-
Try SC in command mode.

WinMerge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/winmerge/

I use Tweak Network for that. It seems to me Firefox works faster.

There is the thread on Sysinternals forum: http://forum.sysinternals.com/forum_posts....D=7651&PN=1 HTH

FYI I reported the issue to Sophos yesterday.
-
Maybe it helps a little: try DiskView from http://www.sysinternals.com/. It reveals the disk's structure. You can also try PageDefrag and Contig.
-
Good point. Never run Defrag from the user account. On the other hand kaminikij reports Defrag stops after 43% is done.

Check your disk with: chkdsk /f and reboot.

Interesting. Mine has only 5 files like: d9fe86bae1b2548e26d703a767b0f76b8a17bc88 deef0631e0403578bef261bb6b8b867204cfe5ae etc. The subfolder contains usually last Windows Update and it shrinks automatically on my box. KB913446 was installed on 15.02.2006 here so it was the last Windows Update. Please look what will happen when next Windows Update occures. IMO Download subfolder will be cleaned.

andreasm and I are taking about C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download subfolder and not about C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution folder. On my XP subfolder Download has 109 kB and has no subfolders.
-
Thank you, sir.
-
On my box C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download has only 109 kb. As far as I remember the subject has been already on the forum. OS cleans C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder so you don't need to do it manually. The main rule is: don't touch and don't remove thing you don't understand. I've tried to be in compliance with this rule.

It seems to me: Advanced -> Windows Size/Location Cache
-
I run XP Home with SP2. Patches are via automatic Windows Update. Now I checked again Downloads subfolder. It has only 3 items - total 65 kb. So OS has cleaned it automatically from 5,75 Mb to 65 kb.
-
On my XP Windows does clear C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads each time the update is delivered. FYI Downloads subfolder has only 5,75 Mb.

I agree. I notice Windows XP removes unused Prefetch entries from time to time (about each 2 weeks). The similar thing is with MUI Cache. Windows cleans from time to time.
