Holla, don?t know if you are in the same time-zone,..., (UTC),..., maybe I am answering at night-time, concerning your location,..., I?ll hope my bad English will do,..., concerning your question, a Registry-value is somehow a tiny and single micro-part of the whole "backbone"- definition-database that your Windows (95-XP) is actually taking advantage of,..., imagine it as a kind of general and unique "spine" of your system that defines; a. Personal adaptation of your individual program-settings (defined by you) b. Program-Settings in general (settings set-up by the program itself, not by you) c. Personal adaptation of your Windows-settings (colors, frames, borders, individual icon settings, defined by you) d. Hardware-settings of your system (in how far Windows grabs onto the Hardware of your System) e. Install,- and Uninstall Data-Informations of Programs and File-Links in general, etc. f. Individual System-Libraries used by the System all those settings are integrated in one unique database, the Registry. the Registry today, replaces the old individual *.ini-files of those Win 3.1, 3.11, Systems (before 1995),..., before that time, each Program had an individual folder with its own *.ini-file-definition,..., those ini-folders were somehow spread all over the System. having all those Programm-and System-Values integrated in only one database (the Registry) it is much more easier for Admins to "transfer" ini-settings over onto other Systems. the disadvantage on the other hand of this Registry-MS-Solution is, that the Registry in general can only "grow" in time, no matter if you uninstall, delete or change System-Values on your own or by programs. Even Windows-Systems itself are actually writing a lot of History-"Junk" into the Registry, without you being able to find those places immediately, to clean them out. I honestly believe, that MS-DOS was somehow a neatly and logicaly programmed System in those "early" days during its introduction together with the IBM-Mashines back in`81,..., though at that particular time, it might have already been outdated,..., I agree with you,..., the DOS-CMD can still save lives concerning major OS-reanimations,..., [OffTopic/End] you said; ,..., with what you are actually saying, Andavari, that CCleaner is in a certain way useless for Win98 users. Shouldn?t the removal of the IE-History-Files (same concerns to AOL 9.0 files, as AOL uses the same History and Temporary Internet File-Folders as IE) be the most concern of that programm, without any extra individual user adaptation? Regarding this, CCleaner is not a "One-Click-and-Forget-Solution" anymore, especially not for unskilled users. Hello Andavari, I am glad I found someone who is still using Win98 on some of his machines, like we do here,..., (it was actually not that much of a bad System, though I think CCleaner can only take at least 50% of it?s cleaning potential on those outdated Operating-Systems, as it has to be manually adapted on the plattform it is sitting on). Since you know what you are saying, I have only two questions (if you have the time). a. With RegSeeker, I?d like to delete the complete Backup-Folder, not just those files within. b. The history under Win98 is not being taken care of with CCleaner here. (in our German-Version, the path is C:\WINDOWS\Verlauf\ (where "Verlauf" means "History" in your language). How did you adapt the right entries in "winsys.ini" for having the history deleted aswell? for a. and b., if possible, the elegant solution would be entries into "winapp2.ini" or "winsys.ini", not the "Settings" and "User-Defined"-Option in CCleaner. ok, now it works with Win98,..., thx for your answer Andavari, Oliver P.S. can anybody maybe explain the technic how to manually adapt the winapp2.ini for individual deletion purposes? If I use an unknown programm, that is not listed in "winapp.ini" or "winapp2.ini" and I know for instance the *.log-files that need to be cleaned out of that individual programm, how can I make CCleaner recognize the programm and delete those files that need to be cleaned? i.e. for "Regseeker", I`d also like to delete the complete "Backup-Sub-Folder" (C:\Program Files\Regseeker\Backup). What entries must be written into winapp2.ini to do so? thx again.

Opera (9.0) is not the problem here (and it is not anymore a beta release),..., Opera (9.0) and CCleaner are perfect under Win XP, but not under Win98. (Opera is ignored under Win98),..., has this got something to do with the enviroment variables? The %Temp% variable for instance, doesn?t work under Win98. Has anybody maybe got an idea? (I know, we won?t look at Win98 anymore in a couple of months, but it is still in use, and there are differences using the same configurations under different Operating Systems, concerning CCleaner). thx for an answer, Oliver

hello together, maybe this issue has been discussed before; under win98, ccleaner (newest version) doesn?t locate the opera (9.00) cache-folder. i installed the winapp2.ini in the same folder as ccleaner. i haven?t made any changes to winapp2.ini. when i use the same ccleaner, opera and winapp2.ini-configuration (without editing) under win xp pro, ccleaner "finds" those opera-files and marks them as ready to be deleted. is the underlaying os responsible for that issue? do i have to manually adapt winapp2.ini to make ccleaner recognize those opera-files? thx for any anwser, Oliver

to kick IE permanently out of your system you definately need a registry-searcher like Regseeker, cause those IE-entries are spread all over the registry. http://www.hoverdesk.net/dl/en/RegSeeker.zip Windows won?t allow to kick all IE-reg-entries out, a few (10-12) will be reestablished after rebooting your system. !!!Important!!! some applications, using the IE-interface like Diskeeper Lite, won?t start anymore. Same refers to online-apps. taking advantage of the active-x access controls, like online virus-scanners or banking access. before killing IE do an image. Oliver

as far as i am informed, the C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Temp subfolder is not a regular Temp-folder. it might have been created by some application for swapping. %temp% usually refers to the standard windows\temp directory. pwillener, you don?t have to wait till monday to obey the 48 h rule of deletion. just change the mac-time status of those files Oliver

For the secure deletion of sensitive files use at least more tham 3 passes. Secure deletion doesn?t actually overwrite the slack-space of those remaining clusters that were once designated to the file you just have ersased. Oliver

yes, as far as I am informed, VB can handle two sets of API?s and ACL?s for working with security descriptors. Kernel and Application-Level, though M$ doesn?t recommend to use low-level access control API?s on NT-Systems. well to be honest, I am not really that much into programming I agree with you, lokoike. jatale, if you are into the issue of cleaning out your Reg., try to get a hand on a professional programm that can be freeare aswell. CCleaner is already very good, but you are better off with a separate specialized programm. I would also recomend a Reg-Defrag Prog. as "NTDefrag" to "boil" down the already reduced Reg., especially after the deletion of 1600 false entries. Oliver

hello, i am not very familiar with ccleaner itself, but I know a little about registry issues. maybe I can help you. you are saying you haven?t have your reg cleaned out for two years and this was the very first time? my suggestions. a. it depends on what kind of reg-cleaner you use (ccleaner is already very good but there are still better (freeware) ones) b. the reg needs to be reloaded several times (win-start-up) to finaly "notice" the missing remaining entries, which can then be safely cleaned out. this procedure cannot be done in only one round. if the ccleaner hasn?t properly cleaned out the uninstall-section of your registry, you can do that manually by jumping on reg-key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall another good cleaner is "Regseeker". hello cde, thanks for your interesting point of view, I thought about it and somehow I can?t agree with you. your statement is assuming, as far as I undersdood it, that you have to wipe out your allocated (sensitive) files all the time to reduce a sensitive file-slack in the long run. Correct me if I got it wrong, but still it is a very good point, I never really thought about that. but what about those of us, who want to have a "quick , sober clean"? "sensitive" data is relative to the one who is producing it and it refers to a kind of personal privacy I think. thx again, the two of you, Oliver

Hello again, after using ccleaner and having all the option-boxes ticked for "windows" and "applications" and after restarting the system, I find my start-menue entries in a new alphabetical order, different to the config I had before. It is not the world but,..., I am pretty sure, this is caused by the deletion of reg-entries, but wich? the UserAssist-entries? For example, I am also taking advantage of "MRU-Blaster" and that application let go much more user-defined reg-entries without changing the order of the start-menue. Has anybody got an advice? If this issue has already been in discussion in this forum, please provide a link, Thx in advance, Oliver

Concerning Prefetch Files, I already ticked the box "System" >>> "Clean old Prefetch Data", but the *.pf files still remain in their Prefetch-Folder after procedure. I am sure I am doing something wrong here. With your answer, that CCleaner doesn?t mess with those *.bak,*.old,*.sik files on root level (throughout c:\ and subfolders) you are acually saying that it is impossible to "finetune" the cleaner, concerning deleting those files?
