  1. Eh?! An inexperienced user maybe. But as a new user to CCleaner why on earth wouldn't an experienced computer user want to have the choice of installing a slim build, a U3 build or a portable build? A new user (to CCleaner) and an advanced (PC) user can be synonymous! Maybe the test of an advanced user is finding the link

Yeah, what I was looking for was more like "I don't use AV because I have this other software .....". I completely agree that common sense goes a long way to protecting you on-line ... in fact it's essential. But it only gets us so far. You can surf safely, but you can only 'avoid' things you know are there. Can you guarantee that next link is safe? Can you guarantee that next download is safe? Can you guarantee that file your mate sent you is safe? Nothing is guaranteed is it, so it's just risk mitigation, pure and simple. I'll stick with my insurance policy thanks For the sake of the small overhead running an AV, going without just ain't worth it.

That's like saying you won't get pregnant using the rhythm method for protection Actually I think it's common sense that means most other people on here are using AV Still, if it works for you, go for it. So why will you be trying Avast again?
  4. Ah so it's always been tucked away then! Doesn't help new users, in particular.
  5. I must admit I shared Nergal's concerns when I saw the reg cmd line option; then I saw the other options and figured it had to be just to configure how CCleaner opens Rather an odd thing to have as a command line parameter though!

    So is anything protecting you?

    Free PDF Maker

I use Solid PDF Creator. I've tried a few - anyone seen any objective comparison tests?
  8. It's pretty poor that's it's so obfuscated
  9. Great By the looks of that article we're gonna see far more drives implementing that sort of circuitry so it's useful to know how to maintain 'constant on' if you need to.
  10. Slim build ... http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds
  11. That's very true. Mine is on my D partition on my desktop PC (since it's ..... data)! I don't know too many other people that have moved theirs around though
  12. Erm, I thought that's what I said, implicitly
  13. That would seem to make sense ... and finding this site seems to back that up ... http://www.export.gov/logistics/eg_main_018803.asp Also depends where it's going from / to of course.
  14. Interesting concept. Does downloading software from a foreign source constitute importing it? (Apologies for the less than helpful reply Alex)
  15. Not sure that there is. %USERPROFILE% will get you as far as C:\Documents and Settings\<profile name> ... you can add the rest.
  16. Be in interesting to know if that 'keep alive' works.
  17. Looks like it's a feature ... http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/samsung...er-95-20091015/ As in, it seems like it's the hardware rather than configuration. In the absence of any other info or ideas, the only suggestion I have is to knock up a program, even a noddy script, that accessed the drive (just a simple file access) periodically ... i.e. every 4:30-ish! Not great - but it would be almost zero overhead.
  18. There are other builds available that do not install the toolbar ... http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds The profile installation is deliberate (I presume!). However this only affects the program shortcut. If you're creating a base image you could easily move this to 'All Users' and have the functionality available to any logged-on user. Note that users requiring all CCleaner functionality may require admin access - this may be further complicated if you're running a strict GP on a domain.
  19. Though in Nic's case he can just repeat his own steps above and check the 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' box in the Open With dialog box when he's entered the regedit path.
  20. If you're on XP you can find it here ... C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe
  21. 'Fixed' it ... or just changed its behaviour? ... Not that I'm cynical or anything
