  1. Don't be daft ... that's where the money comes out when you've typed your PIN in.
  2. Tasgandy! I thought you'd lost your heart to Macrium Reflect
  3. The OP distinctly states that there is no program group at all.
  4. Why do think that CCleaner caused this ? ... and after what 'option was added to CC' ? ... and what files can't be defragged ? Don't you think that a little more information might help people to assist you?
  5. Hmmmm. I read slipo's post as 'only the person installing gets shortcuts' (regardless of user privileges). That's something mentioned reasonably often. Could be wrong of course Either way, your original query still stands. [Edited to add, where I'm reading yours as a privilege elevation / standard user issue in Vista]
  6. Hi CCman, welcome to the forums One of the purposes of the data in this part of the registry is to catalogue the usb hardware and its associated software so that the computer functions properly when you plug and remove different devices, without having to keep reinstalling drivers. Your idea is interesting, but I don't think it would be a good thing to add this to CCleaner for several reasons: 1) Since these aren't registry inconsistencies, this wouldn't be appropriate to add to the registry cleaner section. So that leaves the cleaning part of the app. The entries here include any usb device, including those integral to the smooth running of your computer so you couldn't offer a blanket 'wipe all' option. That means you'd need to offer the choice to remove on an individual basis but: 2) If you did that people would end up deleting essential entries by mistake. 3) Many devices have multiple/associated entries which increases the chance of 2) above. And it may not be possible to work out what the associations are automatically. and 3) The cleaning part of the app doesn't lend itself to offering options like that anyway, unless of course you added a whole new section. Moreover 4) These aren't just singular references in the registry. They have device drivers associated with them and I suspect you can't just start removing these entries without having to take care of the associated items as well. 5) Even if you went ahead and removed the device drivers to keep things consistent and tidy, people may not realise the consequences. If the driver is on a separate disk and they come to want to reinstall they may find themselves stuck! USB Dev View itself doesn't actually give you the option to delete stuff - and knowing Nirsoft tools I think it would do if it was that simple. It does give you the option to uninstall (e.g. your 'previously used devices' idea) ... but that presumably goes the whole hog of removing the driver ... and that's more than just 'tidying a registry entry'. If you want to do that then I suggest you either uninstall the appropriate software or you use the uninstall feature within USB Device View. Basically I think this is too much of a specific ad hoc task, to be undertaken by someone who knows what they're looking at, to be put into a clean-up utility like CCleaner.
  7. Nic are you still having problems with this PC; in other words do you need to get these entries restored?
  8. It shouldn't be a problem. The OS sees them as one drive and defrags accordingly. I've happily defragged my mirror.
  9. If you mean a non-admin user (any user can be given admin rights) then yes you're right - connecting to the internet as an ordinary user is a lot safer (hence all the faff in Vista with this being the default mode). You're not alone - it's a very common gripe amongst the CCleaner community that it doesn't clean all users' profiles in one pass.
  10. That's a different issue to the OP though. anres' problem is where a non-admin user is installing with elevated privileges but does not get any menu items at all. Standard (e.g.) CCleaner behaviour is to only create menu items for the installing user.
  11. It's been interesting watching news threads on the various censorship issues that have been going on in the last year or two in Oz. Although I'm concerned by the attitudes that are being displayed, the overriding feeling is just one of surprise at the conservatism of it. Not that we don't have our own censorship and privacy issues here in the UK of course! The notion that individual states are applying their own rules is interesting too.
  12. If CCleaner is now implementing significant changes to the way the MUI entries are handled then it's not surprising you haven't seen this before. You could leave your PC as it is; with these entries unfixed. Since that's your status quo you obviously aren't going to suffer any ill effects. Or you can back up your registry with the CCleaner back-up option (you should always do this anyway) and then fix the issues. If you get any problems after that you can restore the entries. It's a good idea to back up the whole registry periodically anyway, using a tool like ERUNT. You might like to do this first for added peace of mind. MUI cache entries are fairly trivial anyway and you are unlikely to get any problems after removing them. Here's a link that tells you a bit about them and provides a tool to view (and delete!) them ... http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/muicache_view.html But the bottom line is that there's no compulsion to 'fix' any entries suggested by CCleaner. If you're not comfortable with it then don't do it ... your PC isn't likely to suffer because of it
  13. Hi Nic Glad you're sorted; thanks for letting us know. Out of interest, a couple of the posts I'd googled around this issue involved users pasting into a notepad file end then executing; the critical factor being the creation of a new file. So you may find that if you'd double-clicked your new file it would have worked anyway. Either way ... result
  14. It's a bit of a monster ... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/01/29/google_web_server/ 6% of all internet traffic!!
  15. Be nice to know one way or the other though wouldn't it?
  16. Apologies for my frivolity above I agree with you about the summary area - there's plenty of room so there's no reason why it shouldn't be written in full. As Andavari says, it would create space issues in the application listings though.
  17. Yeah, I can just imagine the new EV 'Vista' range of double-glazing
  18. Nice one Tasgandy I'm glad you posted this ... I've bookmarked it so that when people say ... 'so does this Reflect thing really work?' ... I can point 'em here
  19. And a very timeous testimony from Tasgandy ... http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=26569&hl=
  20. Wondering who else makes windows ... apart from everest ... [Apologies to non-UK audience. In fact it was so bad I apologise to the UK audience too ]
  21. That's hard drive; not flash memory stick. I don't back up to disc media either; multiple copies across external USB drives.
  22. I think (if memory serves) you need to be admin to change file associations (done earlier by OP). Fair point about the security software - reasonable candidate
  23. The Reflect image is just a file in Macrium's propriety format. You can store it wherever you like! You create an image that is split over a number of files ... for example if you want to burn it to disc. I don't know, but I would presume it is not compatible with any Windows generated image. I don't know what W7 gives you in that respect. Read up some more on the Reflect site, have a look at their forums and just download it and try it! That will tell you more than I can and you won't lose anything by doing that!
  24. Hi Nic. If the reg file encoding is unicode then that is not the cause of your problem - but at least we know we need to look somewhere else. And you have also found out that the reg files contain the correct headers - so that's okay. Don't worry about editing the registry manually - you don't need to do this at the moment. ? The first question I have to ask is whether you are still having problems with your 'internet service software'? If you are not then you might not need to restore the registry entries? If you still want to carry on and restore then: ? Have you tried all of the files - do they all give the same error? ? Can you post the contents of the smallest reg file on here please (just copy and paste)?
