  1. Long overdue answer. HostsXpert cannot do the downloading, however it can do all the merging, but only after you've already manually downloaded the separate HOSTS files. 1. In HostsXpert tick the Make Writable button to make your installed HOSTS file writable, otherwise what's detailed below won't work. 2. Click Import Options, and then choose Merge. Now browse to a single HOSTS file you wish to merge. You need to repeat this step for each separate HOSTS file. 3. Click Editing, and then click Sort. Scroll to the top of the HOSTS file in HostsXpert as many have those loopback headers, and you can end up with a myriad of them that need to be manually pruned/removed. 4. Click File Handling, and then click Make ReadOnly. Done. If you use Windows Defender as the default antivirus look in the Winapp2.ini file for the cleaner [Windows Defender *] since it will allow CCleaner to remove backup copies to the HOSTS file that Defender makes every time you change/modify the HOSTS file. Or, for a more targeted cleaner for it without unnecessarily touching the rest of Defender, this is what I use just to clean the backup copies of HOSTS that Defender makes on Windows 10: [Windows Defender (HOSTS Backups) *] DetectOS=10.0| LangSecRef=3024 Default=False Detect=HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender FileKey1=%CommonAppData%\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scans\BackupStore|*.*
  2. Look at the date of the original post, the topic is 6 years old. Topic closed!
  3. Good to know! I'll still be able to use an old last WinXP version of Firefox ESR on my old XP system with that tweak.
  4. I wonder for older systems like XP that have to use an old version of Firefox does the work around eluded to by Winapp2.ini a few posts up work for those systems? Or are those older systems just out of luck?
  5. The uninstaller has some issues on WinXP, another issue which is known is the incorrect install dates for some software.
  6. Trium, perhaps it's because of that older version you are using. If it's available go to this URL/Website address to load the correct Privacy page: about:preferences#privacy Then it's this setting (screenshot):
  7. I read about that issue somewhere last week (don't remember where though), and supposedly AV vendors are working on some fix too. I wonder if you looked on the AV vendor website or even asked on their forum to see if they have a new hotfix updater or whole AV installer that fixes the issue - I'd think they'd be more likely to post it on their forum for people to grab it instead of waiting for an automatic update to fix it.
  8. Yesterday I did what winapp2 eluded to a few posts up and set to false: xpinstall.signatures.required I then re-installed uBlock Origin (also yesterday) which immediately re-enabled it, and allowed it to remain enabled with me doing nothing else, so I left it at that. Then today when I looked in the Firefox 'Add-ons Manager' Firefox ESR Portable 60.6.1 has automatically on its own installed: hotfix-update-xpi-intermediate One thing I don't like at all about this mess is that "hotfix-update-xpi-intermediate" got installed with absolutely no notification whatsoever, and I wonder if some people might think it's malware. --------- This ordeal is making me think of going back to using SRWare Iron Portable as my main browser!
  9. Funny how it had no issue earlier today, and now it's messed up in Firefox ESR 60.6.1
  10. I personally couldn't find anything additional worth adding in that's stored within the Windows registry.
  11. How about trying in Safe Mode instead.
  12. Added: Detect1 Reason: Some 2017 & 2018 PC's still had that old version 14 pre-installed by the PC manufacturer. 13. Since it has a resident background running processes Smart Cleaning, it would help to first look for anything running in the background before attempting to uninstall it. I wouldn't consider it malware, simply because there's allot of software that doesn't uninstall fully, hence the reason to use an uninstaller tool such as the freeware Geek Uninstaller or Revo Uninstaller.
  14. From what I've read the reason is monitor resolution size is getting bigger. If it's maximized there will be no run-off, and the buttons in CCleaner will be usable.
  15. Since the issue is solved I'll lock this topic.
  16. Try disabling Hidden Files and Folders in Windows. I can't remember if it hides those files, or if they're just plainly visible.
  17. Look in the root directory for example if you ran it on drive C: look in drive C: but don't go into any sub-folders, there should be files or folders that have allot of Z's in the name, those would be the file created during the wipe and should be large in size.
  18. I've merged your new topic with this one with exact same title name. Please try not to duplicate topics because you'll end up having people answering questions in two locations. ------------- As for the delay when cleaning. I think some users noted that also having Cookies ticked/enabled under Internet Explorer could also cause a slow down - this was a few versions ago. Edit: I've personally noticed it mostly with having History ticked/enabled under Internet Explorer. Sometimes it will clean it very quickly, and sometimes it will take 10-15 seconds (maybe longer).
  19. I've never seen that Explorer.exe dialog error ever before, rather using the installed version or portable version of CCleaner. Maybe this won't fix anything, but perhaps worth a try: If you go into your version of CC Portable and open 'Options > Settings', then untick/disable both Recycle Bin options, followed by rebooting your system, and then after rebooting re-enable both Recycle Bin options if it will work as intended. Seems like either some location, permissions, UAC, or registration issue of the context menu items.

  21. SAS really doesn't require any external updater software trying to update it, the built in updater works perfectly fine be that in the freeware or paid version.
  22. Added: DetectFile=%CommonAppData%\Oracle\Java Reason: Crucial/Micron Storage Executive uses a packaged/portable non-installed version of Java that writes usage data in the location of FileKey2. 23. SSE2 is a processor feature. The patch would be XP Service Pack 3. But as it pertains to XP running on a tablet I haven't a clue if a tablet would have SSE2 capabilities or not. The failure to install could possibly be what Trium explained which is to make sure CCleaner processes aren't already running resident in the background which seems to be the common cause of failed installations in recent months. Other possible solutions to remedy failed installations can be viewed at: https://forum.piriform.com/topic/5739-solution-when-ccleaner-wont-install-or-download-windows/
  24. CC likes to eat allot, but may draw the line there, too many carbs!
  25. Just about any 3rd party defrag tools can cause that, and more-so if they're allowed to do a comprehensive/full defrag. On Windows 10 specifically when using a 3rd party defrag tool I only have them deal only with fragmented files that they list in their file list after an analyze, plus it means the defrag finished ages faster too, and I allow Windows Defrag to perform the optimization on it's own automatic schedule - that way it isn't re-doing what another defrag program has done.
