1. When you say 'currently' does that mean it may be implemented?

I have no ideal what will be included in future CCleaner versions, that's up to MrG the CCleaner developer. You could always create a batch file that will recursively search your whole hard disk for .gid and automatically delete them.

To do such without having to manually search for them open a command prompt and figure out the settings you'll need by reading the help file for attrib by typing in attrib /? and then do the same for del by typing in del /?

  2. does not mess with settings

Not in my case when I installed SP2. For instance it completely disabled the ability to have enabled in folders View->Status Bar, something I figured out how to fix on my own by creating a new user profile and logging registry settings changes. There were some other nit-picking things it did however they weren't serious.

  3. OK I briefly tested SoftPerfect Personal Firewall and I've come to the conclusion that it's good, with one caveat:

In order for it not be so annoying and constantly popping up allow or block for known unwanted connections that could be system attacks you'll have to input into it block rules for certain TCP ports and UDP ports. The ability to input rules is a very good thing that makes it very configurable similiar to capabilities of Kerio Personal Firewall and Sygate Personal Firewall. To figure out which TCP ports and UDP ports to block visit some security sites which have Kerio Personal Firewall block rules which can be easily adapted to SoftPerfect Personal Firewall block rules.

The problem I see with such firewalls constantly asking for allow or block from TCP or UDP connections is if someone else is using a system and knows nothing about unwanted connections and allows something to slip through which could very easily in this day and age be a system attack or Windows exploit.

  4. Apparently it has been discontinued, are there better FREE firewalls out there (excluding Zonealarm (buggy)/Kiero (going to be discontinued).

    Are these any good:

    SoftPerfect Personal Firewall - http://www.softperfect.com/products/firewall/

    Jetico Personal Firewall - http://www.jetico.com/index.htm#/jpfirewall.htm

    22597

Sygate Personal Firewall is buggy, it blocks update components (a problem you're having) and it blocks some perfectly safe websites such as Apple.com, at least that's the experience I've had with it on my two systems; Win98 and WinXP.

I'm downloading SoftPerfect Personal Firewall right now, I'll give some comments on it within the next few hours.

When I tested Jetico Personal Firewall some months ago it didn't pass the http://grc.com ShieldsUp test as TruStealth, therefore I removed it.

The freeware version of Outpost I don't like, as it has some rather different approaches to "terms" that I'm used to in all other software-based firewalls I've ever used, so much so that it seems alien -- to each their own.

Gotta go, I'm going to install and test SoftPerfect Personal Firewall

  5. You are making your evaluation based on location and I think that is flawed.

    22623

It isn't an evaluation of mine whatsoever, and I myself have been biten by storing stuff like temporary .wav or image files I was editing in the temp folder, I learned my lesson the hard and unrecoverable way so now I avoid storing anything of any importance in the temp folder.

Like I already stated there's many cleaning programs that will wipe your temp folder clean without the luxury of listing/notify what's to be deleted as CCleaner did for you, just be happy you're not having to start over from scratch my friend.

  6. .gid files are junk files, however CCleaner doesn't currently remove them. You could always create an entry for your own usage via what's listed in winapp2.ini.

Another possibility and easier solution is to just download EasyCleaner, it's capable of removing the hidden .gid files using it's Unnecessary button, and it complements CCleaner to the point where CCleaner and EasyCleaner are the only two safe cleaning utilities you'll ever need.

One note if you do download and use EasyCleaner make sure you input into the EasyCleaner Registry button the following to Skip: ccleaner

Doing that will stop EasyCleaner from wiping out your CCleaner settings stored in the registry.

  7. If you're using Windows XP open the following folder in Windows Explorer:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Create a new shortcut in that folder with the following parameters:

    "C:\Program Files\CCleaner\ccleaner.exe" /AUTO

Name the shortcut whatever you wish, a good name would be:

    CCleaner

Now when each user starts their user profile CCleaner will automatically clean junk files. Note: The Issues scanner won't be executed automatically, it has to be executed manually in order to remove issues from the registry.

  8. That is such a bs answer.  You can't say that just because something is in temp it is junk and should be deleted.

Tarun gave you a proper response! It's what I would've told you and I'm sure many other people would've responded the same.

Before I even got down to this post in this thread my first thoughts were "why would someone save an important document in the temp folder," hence there's tons of utility minded programs that will quickly empty temp folders, and many of them won't give an output of what's to be deleted.

You do however have a valid point, that being moving junk files to the recycle bin for final deletion. Although for me such a feature would be useless especially if it couldn't be disabled, however if you want it as a feature post a reply in the suggestions thread.

  9. Unfortunately, this sytem is a "DELL CLONE", and I can not contact the "manufacturer".

    22534

Not sure what you mean by Dell Clone and even if you don't have a valid service tag which would be the case if you bought the system used from an individual you can get the service tag information transferred to you in your name.

Dell has a utility called Dell Driver Reset Tool v1.02L A01, direct download:

    http://ftp.us.dell.com/app/R92578.EXE

  10. In the past according to the makers of VoptXP a commercial disk defrag program a fragmented hard disk will wear out faster than a defragmented hard disk, although it seems as though they've removed that information from their website, so who knows. Then there's the folks that say defragmenting everyday will wear out the hard disk. I defrag each and everyday and have done so since 1998 and haven't had any hard disk failures doing so.

  11. Well I don't trust BackWeb at all since it's installation creates folders with variants of numerals, and it hides itself in a Windows sub-folder. Any program that uses it for an update component should be removed and refunded, and the developer that includes it as the update component should be ashamed that they're too lazy to create their own in-house update component. It's just sloppy and untrustable.

  12. Another DL manager I like which is free/open-source is Wackget, it also has an extension for Firefox users. I don't think it has resume capabilities, however for anyone with a high-speed connection that may not matter. It's based upon or is a GUI for wget which Eldmannen already linked to.

  13. Microsoft has some other service which is in beta at the moment that automatically scans for viruses, runs maintenance, and makes backups. I can't remember what it's called however it's currently free whilst in the beta stage, however once it's finalized it will be subscription based.

  14. Will  RUN>MSCONFIG>STARTUP and remove CCleaner.

    22569

Actually all you have to do is disable the startup in CCleaner by unticking:

Options > Settings > Run CCleaner when the computer starts

  15. Make sure you aren't using an Proxy software for getting updates, many programs will try to validate the update process and will fail if you use some form of Proxy software such as an ad filtering program.

To make sure eTrust EZ Antivirus has a direct connection to the update server do the following:

    1. Run eTrust EZ Antivirus.

    2. Click the large Update tab at the top.

    3. Click Proxy Settings.

    4. Under Proxy Server select the following: Do not use a proxy server to connect to the Internet

Most programs with an update component should have a similiar procedure where you can configure them to use a direct connection without using a proxy server.

    Edit:

Make sure Internet Explorer doesn't have a Proxy server set into it, since most programs will read the Proxy settings from what Internet Explorer has configured.

  16. And do download managers really increase downloading speeds? Will them make downloads from P2P applications run faster?

    22530

I don't think they do anything for download speed, but of course that comment is based upon my usage of dial-up Internet access.

The main focus, or should I say main feature of any download manager without the faster download speed hype should be the following:

    * Resume broken downloads.

    * Manage downloads by automatically downloading into a default download directory without asking the user where to download files, that in itself makes it easy to find all downloads without having to search for them. It also makes it easy to virus scan all downloads in one shot via a right click on the download folder.

I am only interested in spyware/adware/virus free programs.

    22530

Some are malware free, it's easier to find out which ones are if you download them from Softpedia.com, since it gives an all clean reference via an image stating that the software is clean.

Although you stated you wanted a free one, the only one I can say that I have ever truely loved is the commercially available Download Mage which I think is worth every cent.

  17. Make sure the auto cleaning is in the registry under:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

or in the All Users Startup folder in Start > All Programs > Startup

    that would be in:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

    Edit:

Forgot to mention, that CCleaners auto cleaning will be performed on all user profiles, however it will only clean the active user profile. As for cleaning all profiles, you'll probably have to Options > Custom to clean any particular folders however that won't clean the full scope of things CCleaner is capable of without actually running it on each user profile individually.
