    Is this okay?

I don't know if Win98 could even run the hardware on my WinXP system, I already know it won't work with my Dell LCD monitor since I tried it, not knowing if the hardware would work is the reason I've never bothered creating a partition for Win98 on my WinXP system. I do however know my old system could run Win2k or WinXP because I ran the Microsoft scanner some years ago that stated it could, although the minimum amount of memory would be less than the recommended 512MB. The only problem is I'd have to get a slightly larger hdd as well since 2k and XP do consume allot of hdd just for the OS.
  2. To make other registry cleaners ignore CCleaner's settings you have to manually input an exclusion, typically for some just inputting CCleaner will work, however with others you'll need to input the actual key locations. In EasyCleaner > Registry > Skip > Input: CCleaner In RegSeeker > Clean the Registry > Exclusions ... > Input (copy and paste): 1|Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\CCleaner 1|Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\CCleaner\Options
  3. There was some other av scanner awhile back, well maybe a few years ago that had some sort of a problem with RAR archives, especially malformed ones which were intentially used to harm a system -- something about just scanning the files alone could cause a system-wide infection or data destruction. I don't like it when something as good as the RAR archive format get's put into some other companies failings/shortcomings, sort of like how UPX unjustly get's bad publicity just because malware writters compress their malicious software.
  4. I don't know how it could be done as of yet, however a different approach is to use a Sandbox program sort of like Sandbox IE, but for every executible if such a thing even exists -- you'd probably have to write such an application. Whatsmore there'd have to be some sort of allowed/protected/expected defaults built-in such as those for Explorer.exe and other OS related files that must work without interruption. In the meantime Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall 4 - fully functional 30 day trial and paid version has some application protection built in, however it's not even close to what you've described.

As for what I'll replace it with I don't know, hence I haven't started looking yet. As for selling it I won't since I'm going to donate it to my old PC, that is if it will run on Win98 if not I'll upgrade the OS to something newer but not XP because some of my old games that I still like don't run correctly on XP.
  6. Bah Humbug! I worked retail for some ten years in the past and quickly realised what Christmas was $$$. The true meaning has been dead for a long time, and now it's just a holiday for commercialism and corporation profits. In any event Merry Commercialism, I mean Merry Christmas to those who still know the true meaning of it.
  7. Ha ha, just use a hammer! Or maybe shove a peanut butter sandwich inbetween the connectors. Before we know it we'll have to pass through metal detectors just to leave home.

    HostsMan

The HOSTS file will block entries rather any program/service is running or not, however I believe the system must be restarted in order for new blocked sites to actually be blocked and for removed sites to be unblocked. From my extremely brief 5-10 minute usage of HostsMan I think I remember it "protecting" the HOSTS file, although I'm not totally sure I'm remembering correctly. Wait for a proper reply about HostsMan from englishmen if he notices this thread.
  9. Don't forget WinXP can duplicate some registry keys. For example many or should I say most or all of my programs are duplicated in: HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-299502267-1078081533-725345543-1003\Software The location on your system would most likely be under a different key.
  10. Like all DRM bull$hit, it can be circumvented rather legal or illegal depending upon the country of origin, and most notably not speaking about the circumvention making it public knowledge.
  11. The d word has been said in television programming for years. The s word has just surfaced this year in television programming. Swearing in language is common so don't get your panties in a bunch.
  12. All scanners are subject to false positives and will eventually give one, even the mighty eTrust EZ Antivirus. Also if you already have an infection on your system it can infect other files.
  13. I've never had that problem with CCleaner and I've used System Restore a few times within the past 1 1/2 years since I began using CCleaner. However nowadays (well the past few months) I don't rely upon nor put much faith into System Restore since it doesn't necessarily always 100% put the registry back to the way it was beforehand, hence the reason I now reply upon a known good registry backup using Lars Hederer's ERUNT.
  14. If it's about the unplugging of the power cord you could if you have another hdd laying around use it to install WinXP and then format the new hdd and start over.

  16. Media Player Classic is an essential app period!
  17. The non-bundle version is typically what they have listed on the FileHippo.com Winamp download page, which is the reason why I download it from them, although it's easy to get the non-bundle version simply by modifying the download .exe name to for example: winamp###_full.exe ### represents the current three digit Winamp version.
  18. I'm thinking it was sometime around the year 1999 or 2000 if I remember correctly and it was spyware/adware from using GoZilla download manager and FlashGet download manager. The only "virus" if it can be called that was in 1999 using McAfee VirusScan, it detected 8 or so viruses in it's own signature file updates. All other problems I've had come from the "biggest virus" known which is Windows and Windows errors or malfunctions.
  19. I think you should do that thread up just like TwistedMetal has done with winapp2.ini. In other words lock it so that only a mod/admin can input new recommendations which would keep everything neat and tiddy and into only one post. The only thing I don't like about the freeware thread is the other posts in there that are asking questions - keeping the thread on topic makes it much quicker and easier to use - hence my suggestion to lock the new Software FAQ. Edit: Duh, you already locked it. BTW, don't forget to add Personal Message links so people can easily submit recommendations!
  20. Perhaps you have something selected in: Cleaner > Cleaner Settings > Advanced I'd think it would be Window Size/Location Cache.
  21. If the download isn't working delete your browser cache/temporary internet files and download it again. The .exe is in the archive: # Report generated by WinRAR# Archive Regdellnull.zip2005-11-28 12:53 893 501 a65bf702 README.TXT2005-12-06 09:49 40960 17713 22566ab1 RegDelNull.exe## Total Size Packed Files# 41853 18214 2
  22. That was my experience using the trial version in the year 2000, total crap.
  23. Do as rridgely stated, and once you reconfigure MS Office 2003 to your liking do the following: Click Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office 2003 Save My Settings Wizard It will save your preferred settings into the My Documents folder, at any time something messes with the settings, etc., you can quickly restore them using Microsoft Office 2003 Save My Settings Wizard.

    .RAR

Maybe, but I use WinRAR to create all my backups in the .rar archive format. Also I use it's SFX RAR Module to make install scripts.
