    Uninstall

The ones hidden in the normal Windows Add/Remove | Add or Remove are typically hidden if it has to do with Windows. Also some installers have other components that they install which aren't listed there because removing them would break the program installation. It's best is to leave them alone if they're not a normal program uninstaller that isn't listed in the normal Windows Add/Remove | Add or Remove.
  2. Yes I do it daily, and I always use the /V option to remove unused indexes. On my system it only takes about 30-45 seconds to check my secondary D:\ drive and about 60 seconds to check my C:\ drive. On some systems it is painfully slow, "which may have to do with the processor I suppose" but I'm not sure. On a Celeron 1.3Ghz system I recently removed a ton of adware, spyware, trojans, viruses, and worms from it and CHKDSK took about 5 minutes to finish even after all the malware to my knowledge was removed.
  3. HDCleaner is just calling the commands from CHKDSK to my knowledge. From a command prompt view the CHKDSK help file by typing in: CHKDSK /? HDCleaner description: Fix errors on diskCheck Disk command equals: CHKDSK /FCheck Disk description : Fixes errors on the disk.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------HDCleaner description: FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path; NTFS Displays additonal informationCheck Disk command equals: CHKDSK /VCheck Disk description : On NTFS: Displays cleanup messages if any, and removes unused indexes. On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every file on the disk.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------HDCleaner description: Locates bad sector and recovers readable information (Implies 'Fix errors on the disk')Check Disk command equals: CHKDSK /RCheck Disk description : Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /F). Please note, once Full Surface Scanning starts it cannot be cancelled or stopped, and it can take a long time to check a large disk. Only initiate a Full Surface Scan if time permits and when you know you won't be using your computer.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------* HDCleaner description: NTFS only. Skips the checking of cycles within the folder structreCheck Disk command equals: CHKDSK /CCheck Disk description : NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder structure. Not recommended because if there's errors they may not be repaired.
  4. I figured no amount of "tinkering" would work. Once your system is fixed and running properly I'd highly recommend that you make a whole system backup, you can use the built-in Microsoft Backup utility to do such a full backup. Use it by running: Start > Run > "%SystemRoot%\system32\ntbackup.exe"
  5. CDex isn't all that slow to me because I typically use EAC in Secure Mode which is always slower than CDex because my drive's cache audio. If you're going to use CDex it's best to enable in the CD Drive configuration the following to enable "more secure" ripping and better error correction: Ripping Method: Paranoia, Full. Note: If your CD/DVD drive caches audio CDex is completely useless for secure audio ripping, you'd instead need to use EAC and have it properly configured to disable your CD/DVD drive caching feature. Also you "may" want to get some real quality from your mp3's, if you're using the LAME DLL (lame_enc.dll) choose a high quality setting in your cd ripping program such as "--alt-preset standard" or "--preset standard" the resulting files will be close to 192kbps however they'll instead be VBR and yield much better quality. If you're using the new LAME.exe v3.97 beta 2 try "-V 2" which equals the old "--alt-preset standard" or "--preset standard". If you need info on what LAME setting to use read this.
  6. ERUNT is what I make my known good daily registry backup with. ERUNT coupled with System Restore makes a rather good duo for undoing all sorts of stuff. ERUNT is very good for restoring the registry when System Restore doesn't properly restore a backup.
  7. IrfanView (freeware, no adware, no spyware): IrfanView can do this just save any image to .ico. Note: It won't allow you to have transparent backgrounds therefore the resulting icon will has a square surrounding and will most likely look ugly if used on the desktop, etc. --- Clic (freeware, no adware, no spyware): Clic is what I use to "create" icons. All you do is open any image viewer/editor and copy the image to the clipboard and then paste it into Clic. It even supports transparent backgrounds, therefore if the source image is of good quality or is properly edited the resulting icon will look like it was done in a professional program. Note: To have the transparency properly remove a background color it's best to use 24-bit/16-million color images. Tip: Use a painting program such as MS Paint or Paint.NET you can paint the background to a color that isn't in the main icon image itself which will allow you to get a transparent background by only removing the background color in Clic.
  8. Well if running in safe mode doesn't work I'd have only one suggestion. Uninstall CCleaner > Restart Windows > Reinstall CCleaner. Although this seems to only work with the Cleaner section you could run CCleaner in debug mode via Start > Run using this parameter: "%ProgramFiles%\CCleaner\ccleaner.exe" /DEBUG Note: The Debug info is probably only understandable by CCleaner developer Mr.G!
  9. Just bake them a C4 cake as a present, after you get paid.
  10. Allot of people badmouth him, everyone has an opinion and is intitled to. Visit just about any forum and mention something like "I tested my firewall with ShieldsUp!" or "test your firewall as http://grc.com using ShieldsUp!) or just mention anything related to GRC.com and soon after that some smartassed childish remarks and a link pointing to "grcsucks.com" will show up a few posts down. Exactly he was the reason why people learnt about spyware and the absolute need for a firewall, and from my perspective he gave Zone Labs a huge boost because I don't think allot of people would have used or known about ZoneAlarm with his praises of it, I surely wouldn't have at the time since I didn't even know what a firewall was, I had never heard of such a thing. He also made it common knowledge if a firewall failed which forced it/their publisher to fix the security holes. Back in 2000 before I knew what adware and spyware was since I only knew the generic term "virus" I was infected with TimeSync and some other crap from using adware programs (GoZilla, Flashget, etc.), etc., and found the Run commands in the registry I went onto Google and searched for it all because it was causing Internet Explorer and Netscape to constantly crash, and Win98 to constantly crash as well. I looked at what people had written on one of CNET's site's and quickly found a link to GRC.com that had a spyware remover, this was before I knew anything about Ad-Aware etc., (or it's when Ad-Aware was either not public yet or not even conceived) -- something like that, it's difficult to remember everything exactly from five years ago which is now rapidly approaching six years. To summarize, it was Steve Gibson's website http://grc.com that turned me into a security-super-psycho-madman and I haven't changed that philosophy since. ShieldsUp! is quick and easy, and there's no over-the-top technical jargon to confuse people -- it's dead simple either a firewall blocks something using it's default settings, or it doesn't. I don't use any other online firewall tests and haven't looked at any others for ages. The reason for this is because I've found in the past that some either take ages to complete and/or want you to purchase their firewall software or link to an affiliate to purchase one from.
  11. Try it in Safe Mode, there could be some software installed that's conflicting with the Issues scanner.
  12. Don't know, however it would be a good feature to have, or at the least a button to click that would order the files accordingly from what the track number is that's stored in the tag's, however it could also be said that you should be using at least the track number in the filename but that doesn't matter it's your individual choice. I suppose you could email the author (click the About button in Burrrn for the contact address) of the program and suggest such a feature.
  13. ShieldsUp! isn't the most thorough test, it's basic at most, however it's a very quick and easy way to evaluate how a firewall is performing. If a firewall can't past those quick tests I immediately uninstall it. Although allot of people bad-mouth Steve Gibson there'd be allot of computer users that wouldn't have known to use a firewall, myself included when I discovered GRC.com back in the year 2000.
  14. If you're talking about Check Disk I run it everyday before I make my daily backups. I run a surface scan about once every 1 to 3 months.
  15. Come on get the name correct if someone want to try it out, it's NetVeda - Safety.Net and it's free for personal use.
  16. There's two ways it can be installed. The default is for it to automatically allow a program access which is not completely secure. You must have used it in it's "prompt mode" which is more secure. Once you allow and create a rule for all of the programs you use online, and some other programs that call upon other programs it shouldn't bug you anymore unless a program has changed by either a new version being installed, or by a malware infection.
  17. I think you have to add all the tracks at once from an album, however I could be wrong. You may also have to have your tracks alphanumerically named (with leading zero), e.g.: Like this: Dimmu Borgir - 01 - Allegiance.wv Dimmu Borgir - 02 - Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse.wv Dimmu Borgir - 03 - Lepers Among Us.wv Dimmu Borgir - 04 - Vredesbyrd.wv Dimmu Borgir - 05 - For The World To Dictate Our Death.wv Dimmu Borgir - 06 - Blood Hunger Doctrine.wv Dimmu Borgir - 07 - Allehelgens Dod I Helveds Rike.wv Dimmu Borgir - 08 - Cataclysm Children.wv Dimmu Borgir - 09 - Eradication Instincts Defined.wv Dimmu Borgir - 10 - Unorthodox Manifesto.wv Dimmu Borgir - 11 - Heavenly Perverse.wv Or like this: 01 - Allegiance.wv 02 - Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse.wv 03 - Lepers Among Us.wv 04 - Vredesbyrd.wv 05 - For The World To Dictate Our Death.wv 06 - Blood Hunger Doctrine.wv 07 - Allehelgens Dod I Helveds Rike.wv 08 - Cataclysm Children.wv 09 - Eradication Instincts Defined.wv 10 - Unorthodox Manifesto.wv 11 - Heavenly Perverse.wv Not like this, there isn't any software I know of that can sort this: Dimmu Borgir - Allegiance.wv Dimmu Borgir - Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse.wv Dimmu Borgir - Lepers Among Us.wv Dimmu Borgir - Vredesbyrd.wv Dimmu Borgir - For The World To Dictate Our Death.wv Dimmu Borgir - Blood Hunger Doctrine.wv Dimmu Borgir - Allehelgens Dod I Helveds Rike.wv Dimmu Borgir - Cataclysm Children.wv Dimmu Borgir - Eradication Instincts Defined.wv Dimmu Borgir - Unorthodox Manifesto.wv Dimmu Borgir - Heavenly Perverse.wv If you need a freeware software that can quickly rename your files from the tag's stored in them give Tag Frontend a try. Make sure you click/enable 'Test mode' until you know exactly what you want! ----- Edit: Fixed typo's.
  18. I'd say before defragmentation you should really run a Check Disk, since to my knowledge Windows XP doesn't automatically scan the disk for errors before defragmentation. If you already know this just ignore it: Here's how to perform Check Disk:1. Open My Computer.2. Right click each hard disk(s) or hard disk partitions one at a time? ?and select 'Properties'3. Next click 'Tools' and under 'Error checking' click 'Check Now...'4. In 'Check disk options' select 'Automatically fix file system errors'5. Click StartRepeat steps 4 and 5 for each hard disk(s) or hard disk partitions.Since Check Disk will ask for a restart to scan drive C:\ I'd recommendyou have it scanned for errors last, and do restart Windows soon afterscheduling it to scan for errors.
  19. Not only that it set a cookie into Internet Explorer, but I was using Opera when I visited the site.
  20. You're welcome! Not everyone knows some of the in's and out's of burnatonce, however once someone get's use to its functionality it can easily make commercial pay-for-it cd/dvd burning applications seem bland and not worth the money spent on them. Also some of the backend programs in 'burnatonce\external' can be updated with more current versions (just leave cdrdao.exe as-is hence it has special extensions for usage with burnatonce.) I only wish Jamie would at the least release a new version that had verification of the written discs, as that's the only feature I think is a necessity, and is the only reason why I still use Sonic RecordNow for critical backups.
  21. The only three programs with built-in registry cleaners that I ever intend to use from now and into the future are CCleaner, EasyCleaner w/current Blacklist, and RegSeeker w/an exlude.ini file a mile long.
  22. The last time I tested "this free firewall" which is Comodo Personal Firewall it had some open ports when I used the ShieldsUp! test on http://grc.com, needless to say it only lasted a few minutes after that test.
  23. If those are in C:\Windows\Internet Logs it's directly related to using ZoneAlarm. The winapp2.ini add-on has a routine built into it to remove .tmp files etc., from the ZoneAlarm C:\Windows\Internet Logs folder. If the winapp2.ini add-on doesn't remove them you could try Unlocker to see if it will remove them, if it doesn't work and it may not because ZoneAlarm does protect some of it's files you'd instead have to uninstall ZoneAlarm (preferrably in Safe Mode) to have those files unlocked so they could be deleted.
  24. I'm starting to think the disappearing drive issue may actually be a problem in Windows or some commonly installed software that many people are using, and not completely related to the Sony Rootkit. The reason I'm thinking this way is because my first OEM install of WinXP had no detected malware, didn't have the Sony Rootkit, etc., and my floppy drive just vanished one day, and my ERUNT backup and System Restore backup from the day before didn't fix the problem.
  25. Burn4Free is out of the question! The first screen on the installer states it will install an IE toolbar just to use the program, which means I won't be using Burn4Free no matter how good it is.
