Nah, this is the scariest of all:
  3. Run Check Disk in the mode to detect bad sectors, e.g.; do a surface scan. If you've already did that ignore what I wrote below. Here's how: 1. Only start this scan if you won't be needing your computer for at least two hours per hard disk. 2. Open My Computer > right click your hard disk > select Properties > Tools > Error Checking, Check Now > Select both options > click Start ...if asked to schedule the scan the next time Windows starts select Yes and then restart your computer immediately. Should look like this:
  4. He must of been the first "virus" or "malware" such a malicous concept charging for the Internet, who would of thunk it.
  5. Big thanks to englishmen for starting this thread, and to everyone who contributed to it. My download manager will now be busy for many hours whilst I sleep. Edit: Come to think of it this thread should be pinned!

People are nothing other than fancy animals. I could care less about any celebrity, they don't get me excited. The same goes for any politican since I don't trust any of them.
  7. I haven't checked individual components in a very, very, very long time and didn't have the foggiest ideal that prices were that good. Your post now has me contemplating gutting my old Win98 system to do so upgrading, along with the OS of course. Hope you enjoy your new system!
  8. Formatted to get rid of it? Not wise, but too late. If it wouldn't have uninstalled on my system I would have attempted to unregister it, disable all processes and then manually removed it, e.g.; delete the f'r and then run a horde of registry cleaners to make sure it was gone. That's how I completely got rid of Outlook Express which doesn't have an uninstaller that I know of.
  9. In the past with the old version 6 it would have been tons of false positives, even on harmless batch files with the deltree command in them. I tested version 7 and must say it has went from a so-so third rated freeware av scanner to a very good one that actually has less clutter and annoyances versus AVG and Avast. If anyone wants to rudely put AntiVir 7 down they need to download it and give a go before bad mouthing it without actually ever trying it! I'd actually consider using Antivir 7 since the GUI looks very good and is on par with eTrust EZAV when it comes to ease-of-use, however currently nothing comes close to eTrust EZAV's long time ICSA Labs certified detection and cleaning performance, let alone the scanning speed. And according to this thread AntiVir did well according to the c't magazine of Germany.
  10. There would probably be a legal war against phone companies. In any event the current prices for Internet access are in my opinion too high.
  11. In any event I'm still using 1.26.218 and haven't even tried the first beta version. Looks like with the inclusion of the Yahoo! toolbar that I won't be compelled to update anytime soon either, at least with winapp2.ini I can still add my own entries without any need to ever update.
  12. I agree, remove the toolbar. In my opinion it puts a blackeye of suspicion upon CCleaner's credibility even if the toolbar doesn't contain any adware/spyware and it bloats the setup file. Of course these opinions may be invalid if for instance Yahoo! is compensating MrG in anyway, which could keep CCleaner as freeware.
  13. Along with the already mentioned Paint.NET you could use Microsoft Paint if you have something really simple you want to do with PNG's like add text or something else. If you only want to resize a PNG there's also the freeware (not open source) IrfanView and XnView.
  14. Here's a couple of things you can do which will hopefully allow for it's proper uninstallation: * Uninstall it in Safe Mode. * Reinstall it to repair the uninstall program no need to download updates etc, reboot into Safe Mode, and then try to uninstall it.
  15. Indeed good luck in the lawsuit. To help explain it (or not); commercial audio CDs and downloaded music, etc., that has a copyright is owned by someone else and purchasing for instance an audio CD is nothing more than a license agreement between you and the artist and/or recording company. Although you've purchased a license you haven't in reality gained ownership of the content, you've only been licensed ("given restricted permissions") to use the content in accordance to the license agreement. It would be nice if they'd print the license on the content such as a page in the liner notes that explictly states what's allowed and what isn't so people don't get lawsuits for unknowingly breaching and conducting illegal usage of their license, versus the FBI warning and the $250,000 fine, and such and such amount of years imprisonment, etc., blah, blah, blah.
  16. Yup, that's why a couple of years ago when I recorded all my cassette tapes from the 1980's via line-in I chose to use mp3, LAME --preset standard to be precise since I just knew one day I'd have a home or portable player that could playback mp3's. And wouldn't you know it just one year later I got a home DVD recorder that has mp3 playback capabilities.
  17. Brutality! If I had such confidential data (I don't) I'd skip all those steps and just take it to a metal refinery and have it melted.
  18. I have no ideal if CCleaner would be the cause of it. It will require investigation on your part to pinpoint what is causing it, such as not running CCleaner for a couple of days to see if it really is CCleaner causing it or not. Does you wireless router use drivers? If so you may want to look for an updated version, or browse the knowledge base to see if there's any already known problems.
  19. Actually if you by a cd (I'm talking about an audio CD) you don't own it, you've only purchased a license to use it an unlimited amount of times. The same goes for software you purchase.

    Safe Fixing

Unused File Extensions are just that, unused. Lets say you opened a folder that had something named document.crap, now Windows will put the .crap extension into the registry, and of course CCleaner and some other registry cleaners will find the unused file extension. Mui Cache is automatically built by Windows, and it also stores files you run such as .bat and .exe. Let's say you installed a Windows update named KB12345.exe and then deleted the installer, the installer filename should be in the Mui Cache however since the installer was deleted the path to it listed in Mui Cache is invalid, hence it's removal.
  21. If I'm not mistaken some other people have had that problem. Try this: 1. Run CCleaner. 2. Click Options->Settings 3. Untick: Automatically check for updates to CCleaner
  22. Although Blue Glass Cursors isn't a complete set of cursors it is however a nice complement to Microsoft's Royale theme.
