True, so true! But if it happens before reboot, why couldn't it be deleted? Unlocker by Cedrick Collomb has very few files (if any) it cannot delete on reboot. If it happens before windows loads, it shouldn't be a problem, should it? Fill me in, heh!

Shutdown after defrag works great. Can you add the option for Defraggler to wait if something is running (say, a scheduled antivirus scan) before shutting down? Thanks!

This is a bit confusing. You want this variable added to the Includes rules, or to CCleaner cleanup? It would help if you told us where you wanted it added & why so we can understand your logic. Thanks!

You probably never would use that, Hazel, because your computers are just set up to use in a regular config. People who have to recover files from drives hooked up externally might find it more useful though.

For Windows, CCleaner has a cool feature to remove locked files on reboot if necessary. Although it does not happen often, I have had times when a registry key, or even 2 of them appear to be impossible to delete. They are verified to be trash keys, just won't leave! Any way to add a function (Similar to CCleaner function) of adding a "Delete key on reboot. Reboot required to delete key(s)?" to CCleaner? I sure would love the ability to delete them when they crop up once in a blue moon!

I wish I can clean the registry hives of external computers. Any chance of adding a way to tell CCleaner Registry cleaner to select a registry hive from another PC? Maybe even load & clean multiple hives at once... Thanks!

I like how the registry cleaner is in CCleaner, but I wondered how it would be to provide a second, alternative view in the CCleaner Registry cleaner. I really wish CCleaner had the option to lay the Registry checkmark boxes out like this: [ ] HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT [ ] HKEY_CURRENT_USER [ ] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE [ ] HKEY_USERS [ ] HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG The reason I am suggesting this, is sometimes I don't really want CCleaner to clean the classes section. Or perhaps not the current config, etc. I would LOVE a way to unselect a registry hive for CCleaner to clean or not clean. This would help increase the integrity of the registry by totally avoiding the cleaning of certain hives, no matter what a user selects to clean in the clean options. Maybe this could be placed above: [ ] Missing Shared DLLs [ ] Unused File Extentions, etc, etc, etc.... This way, not ONLY could a user select what to clean, they could select the location they needed cleaning as well. User could keep normal options checked for example, but skip the registry hives CLASSES, CURRENT_CONFIG, etc, depending on their needs for registry integrity. This truly would increase registry safety in cleaning since certain hives could be skipped altogether! In fact, I would LOVE a way to not just skip a hive, but be able to branch it out & select certain places in a registry hive to prevent CCleaner from cleaning. Say you wanted to clean under [ ] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, but all you wanted for CCleaner to clean is the software section (So you would unselect HARDWARE, SAM, SECURITY, SYSTEM.) This would be pretty near the ultimate control over a user registry. Having the option to select what TYPE of junk to clean is nice. VERY nice. But if a user could also select the HIVE they clean, or even a specific part of a hive, wouldn't that be even better? Having the hives listed above the regular options would make it sooo simple to select hives to clean (or not to!), followed by what type of sections to clean! Feel free to + or - this idea.... P.S. Isn't CCleaner "ribbonized" already? Meaning, you already DO click a tab to switch items. They are just on the left, instead of the top. Nothing wrong with that, in my opinion.

What is your recurse code? How do you have it set up? Also, are your TMP entries ever changing in name/locations, or do they pretty much always have the same name/locations each time? I would be interested in a step-by-step procedure posted for your CCleaner recurse setup so I can see if there is a way to help you. There is a really good & free program here ---> http://infrarecorder.org/ Many use it to replace Nero, & it does support disk erasing/fixating/audio disks, video disks, data disks, etc. Totally free, plenty simple enough to use. Perhaps this will help solve all your burning problems when combined with IMGBurn that someone else listed earlier. Both are excellent bloat free programs.

If you use the second drive for games, I assume you have a certain folder that gets filled with trash... Why not just take advantage of the CCleaner includes (Options/Include/Add button to add...) & simply add the folder(s) you want it to clean whenever you run it? Save settings to .INI & you can run it from flash drives. Is this what your looking for, or did you have some other kind of second drive cleaning in mind?

Does Windows 98 use environment variables? Wouldn't adding that support break a few Windows releases that Portable CCleaner supports? Just asking... Don

Forgive me if I am wrong here, but typically when Windows runs out of RAM, it pages to harddisk instead. The problem is, that mechanical harddisk have moving parts. Specifically read/write heads that need to jump all over the place to find a location to write to or read from. Harddisks usually range in the thousandths of a second (compared to more than 1,000 times faster in the memory that is millionths of a second or even less!) for accessing data. If you page working files to the drive, it slows things down & increases wear on the drive as well as stressing the CPU/Motherboard & the other components that heat up trying to work on data that must be buffered to disk. The simplest & easiest way would NOT be to put something like this in CCleaner, but just upgrade your RAM so you get a permanent speed increase. Crucial memory website has a memory scanner that makes it so easy, that they tell you the price, memory type, supported ram, even checkmark box the mem you want & order right from that page! Save yourself some time & extend the life of your computer. Try a RAM upgrade instead, & you will forever wonder how you got along without it! CCleaner is primarily to clean common junk areas from the PC. Paging ram to harddisk will not yield a permanent result. In fact, you will be needing to page more & more things to the drive as time goes on if you leave it running with a low amount of ram due to the fact you will be opening & closing a lot of programs (causing further slowdowns & problems). Your idea sounds good, but the only workable solution I see at the moment is to get yourself extra RAM. I just don't see how adding this to CCleaner will really help that much due to the explanation given above. Hope this helps you, & welcome to the forums!

I noticed that CCleaner startup utility, even in v3.01.1327, is not able to browse to the location of a startup entry. Right-click only has: - Disable - Delete - Save to text file _____________________________________ Wouldn't it be easier if it also had: - Open file location _____________________________________ There are a lot of times that files are questionable that load on startup, & it just makes me beyond annoyed to have to work so hard to manually navigate to files that appear to be un-needed to be sure. It wastes a lot of time. There are a lot of startup items I am familiar with due to working with them each day, but there are so many new files introduced each year, that having the ability to simply right-click & Open File Location sure would save a ton of time! Feel free to + or - this idea, but I use CCleaner a lot, & if it just had this added alone, it would be such a lifesaver to me! What do you all think?

Hazel, I believe I know why that happened. Although this may not be in his specific case, I have had cases where installing the updated CCleaner whereupon the screen with the toolbar would take a few seconds delay to load. The next button would be available before the toolbar screen loads, giving the illusion that there are no checkmark boxes. This is, of course, a bit annoying, & users who do not realize a toolbar comes included may be a little upset. It can happen on slower systems, or even on higher end systems if they have a lot going on to slow up the computer. It can also happen if the computer starts to do an automated task, & the computer just so happens to begin the power chore/drain right as a user decides to unpack the CCleaner installer... While there are people who do simply just not read, I have also seen the case where the installer would delay or lag loading the toolbar & cause someone to erroneously simply just click next. In testing, there have been instances where it took as long as 5 seconds for that screen to load. I hope this helps, & I certainly hope the delayed loading is fixed in future versions. Don

While this WILL make your system run faster, the net effect is the constant shuffling of files will shorten your drive life. Usually just the occasional defrag is recommended so that you have a balance between drive life/performance.

It seems like the latest iteration of Defraggler (XP SP2) works good, but when you insert a drive, it seems to set that drive icon as the (?) style icon instead of the normal [__] drive icon. Upon insertion of a drive with multiple partitions, it seems that Defraggler again assigns the question mark to the newer (last drive), but as the drives all come online, it keeps pushing it down to the last drive. For whatever reason, seems to show the last drive with a question mark instead of normal icon. Pic uploaded so you can see what I mean.

+ 1 But with a small change. Perhaps include a way that Defraggler can auto activate & run if fragmentation levels exceed say, 25% (user selectable percent?). Include the option to lock-out SSD drives when checking for fragments.

Example: You have a 500 GB drive. ______________________________ Partition the 1st 100 GB for Windows Partition the remainder for Backup Inside Backup, simply create 3 folders for Drivers/Multimedia/Personal Inside Multimedia, create Audio/Documents/Pictures/Videos ______________________________ Good luck!

I really love the free space bars on Windows 7 that show a bar with percent free space on all the drives. When you need to know at a glance, it just can't be beat. A pie graph is simple, but you have to take a moment to decide which color is free space & which is used. With a bar graph, the free space is immediately apparent! Any chance of including a bar graph to show free space on drives? Having a choice of Bar or Pie would be great! Defraggler shows numerical %used & % free space, but I was thinking it would be simpler instead of having 2 different sections, to just make Defraggler show 2 colors along a bar graph when it loads! 1 Color for Used, & 1 Color for empty! I think it would be so much simpler this way! Users would not have to read the %, but can tell at a glance. I hope this can be implemented, because I like how Windows 7 does the free space bar graphs in Windows Explorer!

I have a friend that works at a tax place. Typically, they run through hundreds of users in a short amount of time. This results in lots of small files which become fragmented. Usually, just the same stuff over & over. While Windows does get fragmented over time, this one tax folder is the most frequent/largest fragmentation amount. Is there any way to add to Defraggler an include/exclude filter similar to in CCleaner? When a user selects folders to add to the include/exclude folders, it would work like this: Defraggler ONLY defrags files in the Include folder Defraggler SKIPS any files listed in Exclude folder This would cut back on un-necessary whole drive defragments/drive wear. User could optionally select a whole drive defragment every month or so...

I noted when you install a new version of Defraggler, it is no problem. The installer can select. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ But it is confusing having 32 bit Defraggler + 64 bit Defraggler. Users have to select one customized version for 32 bit, then totally change for a customized 64 bit version for 64 bit Windows! + If you run 32 bit defraggler from a flash drive on a 64 bit computer, you may run into problems. You definitely can't run 64 bit software on 32 bit machines! If the executable could be combined so a user doesn't have to try to have multiple versions of Defraggler just to run on different 32 bit/64 bit machines, it would be much easier! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ * Isn't there a way to combine the 32 & 64 bit versions, but just include a script to auto-select for 32 bit EXE on 32 bit platforms, & 64 bit for 64 bit platforms? In addition to that, since there are no visual cues (such as a system tray icon) to indicate that Defraggler is running in the tray, why not just discard the commandline defraggler & include a script to run the GUI version of Defraggler minimized to the tray or something? Currently, Defraggler has nothing to show when it was run last. I have set up computers to auto run Defraggler ever week/month, but it seems like when I revisit, they have a lot of fragmentation! These are not SSD drives, but your standard drives. It makes me wonder sometimes if Defraggler really does run! The GUI is great, but there is no way to tell if/when Defraggler has been run since I left! Would be nice to see that Defraggler ran on November 10, 2010 / 2:30 am for instance... Please, I would love this feature.
